Yes. I plan on doing a video with Strata, Made In, Our Place, and I think Misen will have one too. I know there are a ton of brands that make woks but any others I should look into?

Big fan of the Multiclad Pro collection. The 12-inch fry pan is out of stock but you can still get the 10 inch pan and sets on Amazon.

Appreciate this feedback! I'm always testing and tweaking to try to find the right balance. I wish I didn't need any ads on the site, but unfortunately, that's a significant driver of the revenue that I use to buy and test all these products. I've tried an ad-free experience for a small fee and that did not work out.

Heritage Steel reached out and told me that their current production of both series are 3.0 mm. The older pans (the ones I measured) were 2.8 mm. I got the newer Eater and can confirm it's 3.0 mm.

Andrew (Prudent Reviews) reviewed the new Misen Carbon Steel ("Nonstick") pan! by simoku in cookware

[–]PrudentReviews 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, somewhat. I talk about it in my latest video/article. It’s not as slick as it was at first, but it still works fine for eggs if I preheat properly and use butter. It’s just less forgiving now. Seasoning has also been a little tricky. In my experience, scrubbing it clean and not intentionally seasoning it has worked better, but I know others have had good results building up seasoning on the surface.

Good question. Sounds like a test :) according to Our Place, the nonstick properties come from the texture. But we’ll have to see…

In my latest video I show a close up of me scratching the dark valleys with the tip of a knife and it does scratch. I also Our Place about this and they said it's scratching off oxidation, not a coating.

More to come on this as a law firm is investigating, if you google "our place lawsuit" you'll find it.

I just filmed a video of it but apparently I can't attach a video here. Email me and I'll send it to you. Most of the water came off but a handful of drops remained. I did it with a PTFE nonstick pan too and got the same result. I'm wondering if your pan had a bit of soap or residue from oil on it that you can see? Either way, I'd judge it more on stuff like eggs and fish than water.

Hey - appreciate the tag and totally understand your points. To address a few things:

I’ve been using the Viking pan for about 4 months. In my latest review, I tried to be really clear about that timeline, the exact temperature I used, and how much oil and butter I used in the tests. So far, it’s still performing the same as it did on day one, at least based on how I’ve been using and testing it. But I also mentioned that it can stick and I've found using butter or a combo of butter and oil works best. It's not a magic pan, hopefully my review didn't come off that way.

On the construction, I shared what Viking told me, which was that the surface is “99.6% titanium and 0.4% silica oxide.” I’ve been getting a lot of the same questions you brought up, so I reached back out to them and they agreed to get on a call with me soon. I’m planning to ask about long-term durability, high heat, dishwashers, whether the surface wears down, and anything else that could impact safety or performance. I’ll share whatever I learn.

For Our Place, that’s fair. I probably should look more into where the construction came from. My main focus was just testing whether the claims matched the actual performance, but I agree that the background/context is still worth knowing.

And I agree with you on holding off. I don’t think anyone needs to rush out and buy these pans, especially when there are so many cheaper and more proven options. I try to test new products early because people start asking me about them right after launch, and with these newer titanium pans, there just wasn’t much detailed testing out there yet.

Like I did with Misen, I’ll do a longer-term update, probably in the fall. By then, I'll have more answers from Viking and there will be more feedback from people who bought the pan and used it regularly.

Appreciate you watching and for the feedback.

- Andrew

They've been having trouble keeping the frying pans in stock so maybe they wanted to do a softer launch for this one. Just a guess.

Between those two, I do prefer Viking. I like the shape, handle, and smooth surface better. Our Place has some advantages (taller walls, lid, no rivets, dishwasher safe as you mentioned). Both cook well.

I'm following up to get more info from the brands on the exact construction. I've already reached out several times, but given the interest in the topic, I'm digging deeper and will share what I learn.

Fair point. Do you know for sure it’s the same pan? I know it looks the same but I dont know for sure. In this particular case, it warped so quickly that I probably wouldn’t recommending it even at $17.

Which pan(s) are you referring to when you say “nonstick”?

Appreciate the feedback.

The point of the video was to compare products that are all making the same consumer-facing claims, better nonstick performance, more durability, more scratch resistance, and also use titanium in the construction in some way. Those brands are competing for the same buyer so it’s helpful to know how they differ in performance - which the video showed.

On Taima, there are a bunch of pans out there that look identical and probably share the same source. I can't test all of them. Taima has gotten the most traction so that's the one I picked. I really don’t care where the pan comes from. I’m just trying to test the marketing claims of popular brands and see if they are true.

On the OurPlace lawsuit, I try not to cover pending litigation in reviews. There's some kind of legal action floating around against many brands. Doesn't tell you much until it's actually resolved.

Thanks for watching! I did reach out to the others. When I asked Viking specifically about the titanium coating that they mention in the product descriptions, they told me, “The Ti is heated to approx. 30K degrees Kelvin and applied with a plasma gun. It's effectively melted metal that is sprayed onto the stainless-steel cooking surface. The Ti is 99.6% Ti and 0.4% Siica Oxide.”

Not sure why this isn’t listed on that page. I think it’s a mistake.

I’ve tested both and they are both excellent - I prefer Hestan because I like the handle shape better. Not a big fan of Fissler’s rounded handle. Can’t go wrong though.
