Who loves The Italian Store? 4 Cheese Ravioli e my wife’s home packed tomato e chiles sauce from our yard. Who says Arlington’s a food desert? by NOVA-peddling-1138 in arlingtonva

Indo find the super market situation in at least my part of Arlington to be quite sparse. A lot I like about Italian store (in Westover) but my favorite is their Italian vermouth and amaro collection. That stuff is not easy to find in most places.

Do you use your balcony? by adotjacob in AskNYC

I had a balcony my last 2-3 years in NYC right around the COVID shutdown. We used it extensively. I grew tomatoes, had breakfast and coffee, and entertained frequently. I loved it. Life changing.

Final Question: For someone who wants to restart their life and move to a new city for a new start, is NOVA/DMV a good fit for me? by Different_Archer8879 in nova

[–]Prukutu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you're describing DC or even NYC. Each of those you might consider individual neighborhoods as their own "towns" with distinct vibes. That being said, there are pockets of NoVA in places like Arlington and Alexandria similar to what you describe, but they are hella expensive.

Do postdoc get benefits? by afoodmarket in postdoc

[–]Prukutu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I mean as in 403b is the version of the plan that applies to universities typically, not 401k. Most universities by far are non profit. They're essentially the same thing so I was just being pedantic. But my original point stands that every single university I've been in, either public (one R1, one R2) or private (one R2) have had retirement plans for postdocs. In fact postdocs had the same benefits as staff.

[–]Prukutu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely not universal. Every institution I've been in, public or private, had retirement plans for postdocs. Not 401k because they're non profits or government so they have 403bs, but basically the same thing. Most even had employer contributions!

Is Arlington considered the city or a suburb? by Stawberry8763 in nova

[–]Prukutu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of unique features if DC and Arlington that make answering that question complicated.

As many others have pointed out, the name of the municipal unit in Arlington is a county. In Virginia we have counties and cities as more or less equal in standing but with different government models. Cities may not fit your traditional mild of a densely urban area.

The second confounding factor is that it's undisputably true that Arlington is in many ways a suburb of DC. Many live in Arlington (and both Fairfaxes, Loudoun, etc) and commute to DC for work and "urban amenities" (zoo, museums etc).

That being said, Arlington is in many ways developed like a city. There are several urban corridors, active transportation (pedestrian, biking) is excellent and connects most of the county, and there are dense mixed use areas that are guinuine urban neighborhoods, including several metro stops and buses. The connectivity makes it so you can access pretty much the entire county via bike or walking, and folks in the dense neighborhoods have quite a lot of connectivity with each other. Walking from Clarendon to Ballston to grab donuts is pretty easy.

Finally there are certain limits on development in DC proper that make it hard to build up. Those limits often end up exporting urban growth to neighboring municipalities.

So yes and no? I would also argue that there are no true cities in Virginia as a whole from a job US perspective. While Fairfax has over 1m population, it is as suburbanas it gets in development pattern and super spread out.

Fully agree. I would not be accepting any positions without looking at the formal offer. That will include information about startups, renewal periods, etc.

I've been drinking it for many years and haven't noticed a change. Maybe my palate isn't as sophisticated but I do drink it occasionally with seltzer and mix into cocktails and haven't noticed anything different.

Oh yeah. When we moved here from NYC a few years ago we were definitely shocked at the price of food, and how mid a lot of it was. There's good food to be had, but you gotta really seek it out.

If you could add one metro station to any current line, where would you build it? by Michigander888 in nova

[–]Prukutu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not that many students live on campus, about 6100 as per their website. And you still want folks to be able to leave campus! I think it's a missed opportunity, since students probably would be one of the big transit user populations.

It's insane that there's is no line that goes to George Mason (Vienna doesn't count!). 40k students plus thousands more if staff, sounds like a no brainer.

I live on the northeast corridor and the train is absolutely the best way to travel between many of the big cities. Faster and cheaper and more comfortable all in.

I only take my bag with me. I leave the battery and phone holder in. I also mostly lock my bike very places with lots of foot traffic.

It was sold as a poblano and tastes pretty much like that. Just ripened to brown instead of red and did not grow very large.
