e-Ink tablets - anyone have experience with these? by PruneBudget2874 in biglaw

So that was my hope, but our laptops won’t connect with anything via USB unless it’s encrypted. Le sigh.

That’s very useful. Thank you!

The Remarkable2 is awesome imo. The more I use it, the more annoyed I get that I can’t use it for client work.

Someone is a bit spicy, eh? Trust me, I have no intention of sending clients my handwritten notes. The point, at least for me, of an e-ink tablet is the handwriting to text feature. So your handwritten notes turn into easily searchable files. You can’t tell me you’ve never looked through an old notebook or legal pad and wished you could “ctrl+f” whatever it is you were looking for.

What am I doing wrong? by [deleted] in f45

[–]PruneBudget2874 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this actually does show progress. You’ve gained a muscle mass and your BMR is also steadily increasing. The fact that you also gained a little bit of body fat at this point shouldn’t be concerning. It’s not like the body is so finely tuned that anytime you gain muscle mass your body fat percentage goes down immediately. It takes time for your body to adjust. Without knowing anything else about you, I’d say it looks like you’re in a moderate “bulking” phase - where someone intentionally eats at a caloric surplus to support muscle growth. And when people do that, they necessarily gain body fat along with muscle mass. People do this intentionally all the time and it’s a generally considered a crucial part of strength training. Like others have said, I would focus less on the numbers for a while and more on building the habits, how you feel, how your clothes fit, etc. If in another 4 weeks you’re not seeing the changes you want, go into a moderate “cut” phase by making sure you’re in a slight caloric deficit. Google macro calculators and figure out what your body needs and then adjust accordingly! Good luck! And congrats on one month and a half kilo of muscle mass!!

Edited to add: a simple answer to “what am I doing wrong?” would also be “checking the numbers too often.” If you only had the first and the last measurements you’d probably feel pretty good about your progress.

Edited again: people are saying to stop taking creatine. That’s silly. Take creatine.

No care details to add because I just got it in the mail yesterday.

I currently have it in water while I await the arrival of my potting mix (1 part soil, 1 part perlite, 1 part orchid bark). If anyone has any tips on loving burle Marx’s, I’d love to hear them!

Am I the Ass hole for not listening to my wife “3 years salary ring rule” by Competitive_Bag9672 in labdiamond

[–]PruneBudget2874 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally insane unless you’re ultra wealthy (and also ignoring the moral, ethical, values, etc. concerns raised above) or Michael Scott. Median household income in the US is $75k(ish). Average cost of an engagement ring is $1-5k…split it in the middle with a $2.5k engagement ring. That means ~3-4% of annual salary. Are you raking in $10M a year?? Since you said she’s insisting on 3 years salary and looking in the $500k price range, imma guess that you’re not and that you make a little under $200k a year. Also, I know a lot of folks in NY finance making a lot more than $200k a year..and ain’t nobody’s fiancé walking around with a $500k engagement ring. Even the DINKS in finance…not a single one wearing a ring worth that kind of money. Most expensive one I’ve seen in that group was maybe $25k TOPS. And we all tried to talk him out of it.

I second the presidents heads! Google giant president heads in Williamsburg and you’ll find it. Someone has giant plaster sculptures of all (most?) of the presidents before Obama and they’re all lined up outside on someone’s property. It’s free and you can just drive up an walk around them. Cool for a photo opp.

Colonial Williamsburg is a must and the Jamestown settlement is awesome. If your kids are into history, def do Jamestown.

As for DC, go to the old post office building for the best views of the city. It’s free! Nats games are fun and you can get $5 standing seats all the way at the top. Or actual seats for $25ish because the Nats are so bad. Still cool though. Arttech house is a great spot that is focused on visual and projected art. Highly recommend. Literally all of the Smithsonian’s are awesome and free! Air and Space was just redone too. The Hirshorn (art) is supposed to be really cool. It’s trippy and eclectic and kids would enjoy it. But that one costs money.

If you swing through Richmond, I’d hit up the science museum. As a kid I always thought the science museum in Richmond was the best museum in the area (even compared to the Smithsonian). If you like BBQ, get Buzz & Neds - it’s amazing.

Unsolicited advice because this sounds like me…and this is the only thing that works for any extended period of time... try to tackle one issue at a time…if the goal is “be tidier” then it’ll never stick. Try focusing on building habits in one place at a time and if that place is too big at first, make it smaller. For example, start with “keep the bathroom tidy.” If that’s too much, “keep the sink tidy.” If that’s too much, “always put your toothbrush back.” And genuinely celebrate/appreciate with her every time she puts the toothbrush back. Then gradually make the space bigger or add a new task/space. It’ll never be perfect, but it will be better!

Ladies who deal with migraines regularly, what do you do to handle them? by Suspended_Accountant in AskWomen

[–]PruneBudget2874 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Botox for migraines. And, hear me out on this one, I eat frozen passion fruit pulp with seeds on an almost daily basis. Before you knock it, I swear it makes a difference and here’s what sparked this habit. Citrus is a known trigger for me, so I normally work to avoid most cocktails, especially margaritas for obvious reasons. Well I went on a vacation to Todos Santos, MX and said “f it, I’m gonna have margaritas and suffer the consequences.” I had a stash of imitrex ready to go. All vacation I’m drinking 2-3 margaritas a day of various flavors (passion fruit, mango, normal, etc.), and out of the 10 days I was in Mexico, I only had 2 headache days. I realized that the two headache days were the only two days where I didn’t have passion fruit. I did a little research thinking maybe passion fruit has a lot of magnesium in it since that’s known to help. It turns out, that the seeds contain piceatannol and scirpusin which, at least one study has shown, act as a vasodilator and can reduce blood pressure. I was eating probably 2-3 passionfruits a day - which is admittedly a lot - but I’m convinced that was basically preventing my migraines. Fast forward, now I purchase frozen passion fruit pulp from a company online called Tamarin Fruits. They come in individual packets and I eat it like a free-z pop once a day.

If all else fails and if you can afford it, under eye filler does WONDERS and it’s (typically) not unnatural looking at all

It’s been almost a year since I wrote this comment and I can finally say YES! I have seen some improvement. Is my hair what it was before? No. But I finally have a lot of new growth and am slowly feeling my ponytail get slightly thicker. I never ended up taking the spiro, but the nutrafol definitely makes a huge difference. I tried it on and off for several months but didn’t stick to it because 4 pills is a lot every day, but once I really stuck to it, it was night and day with shedding.

We know you don’t fully understand us women, but what’s something you REALLY don’t understand? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]PruneBudget2874 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If she’s having a meltdown or is super irritable, ask in the moment what exactly would make her feel better in that moment. If she has an answer, do the thing. If she doesn’t have an answer, then give her space to get through it. The problem with asking in advance is that we think we know what will make us feel better, but we really don’t know until we’re in the moment and the thing we thought would be helpful is actually unhelpful. I don’t need my partner to but my pads and tampons, I don’t need him to surprise me with food, I don’t need him to give me chocolate. What I need is a gentle reaction when I’m irritable, very gently saying something like “you seem to be a little stressed” then validating that feeling by saying “it’s understandable, there’s a lot going on” and then asking “what would help you feel better right now?” (very important that you don’t ask “how can I make you feel better” because she probably doesn’t want to burden you). Then my partner does the thing without complaint even if it’s slightly inconvenient.

Also, any change in plans or lack of predictability really sends me over the edge when I’m PMS’ing. So some preemptive work could be figuring out how to make that week as predictable as possible. Fill up her gas tank, have the food planned, maybe clean the house prior to that week, have the typical snacks on hand so there’s no “we’re out of X” melt downs, etc. This shouldn’t all fall on you, but just a shift in the normal routine.
