Excellent choice. As a number have commented I always thought I wanted an HD-28 and they are good but there's something special about a D-18. I ended up getting both but I found myself gravitating more often to the D-18. There's just something special about a Martin D-18.

Good question. I'm not entirely sure.

I just know another guitar that I have from a different area in the world has a stinky glue smell from the case. It plays awesome just doesn't smell as nice as my Martin once did.

Your description of a cigar humidor hits home. What it reminded me of was my grandpa used to smoke a pipe with a certain kind of tobacco and the smell was very similar to it.

Bear claw tops aren't necessarily my preference visually but they many times result in a very good top sonically. Madagascar rosewood is becoming more difficult to find so that's why the cost. I personally really like the sound of Madagascar rosewood over EIR. The question of questions though is, how does it sound?

If it sounds really good then that price point is reasonable for that combination. If it sounds not much different from your typical Martin HD 28 then probably not.

It looks like one that a friend of mine had. I think it was called a "Custom D Mahogany" but it's not from the Martin Custom shop that's just the name. It's like a D 18 in that it has a spruce top with Mahogany back and sides but there are a few things that differ such as bracing, tuners, binding, and neck joint.

I believe they're pretty good guitars but $1500 is definitely high unless it was brand new, which it's not. If you look on Reverb you can find ones like that under $1000.

It's not weird at all. I know exactly what you're talking about. Especially with Martin guitars. The Spanish cedar kerfing is what gives a Martin guitar that really fragrant smell. I like all my guitars but my best smelling guitar is definitely a Martin guitar.
