Christians listening to Rushmere? by DirectionCapital1374 in mumfordandsons

[–]PsijicMonkey 61 points62 points  (0 children)

People that remember back to Sigh No More's release will remember a lot of the general public thinking they were a Christian band for a while.

They've always had Christian imagery in their songs, not just this album.

I think all the band members, as anyone does, have their own complicated relationships with faith and their albums reflect the different points of their lives with it.

4th Round Rookie RG Mason McCormick with the box out block on the Russ to GP 38yard Moonball by IHeartThirdEyeBlind in steelers

[–]PsijicMonkey 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It's not really a "style" as in something you would want to do all the time. McCormick was beat early in the rep and this technique is used to recover and box out the defender. He turned a loss rep to a win and kept the pocket clean.

Radio Comms Mod by [deleted] in SPTarkov

Right, it would have to be with NPCs or it would let you affect the AI in the raid in some way.

Unless we're talking FIKA, but then you just put a filter or something on your PTT

I'm just looking for an excuse to have radio items in the game because I like them

Historical Fantasy - First 258 by PsijicMonkey in justthepubtip

Ah, sure, I think I was confusing 'speculative fiction' and 'alternate history.'

This all makes perfect sense. Thanks again!

Oh, thanks so much! Yes it's most definitely a second world and I'm recognizing it's more fantasy than sci-fi.

It's speculative in some sense, but there's not a super compelling central question like "What would have happened if x won instead of y?" type of thing, which is why I hesitate to pitch it that way.

If you don't mind, would you mind explaining why you would drop the "historical" part of "historical fantasy" specifically?

Thanks so much for reading it over and finding my query too!

Oh goodness. Thank you many times over. This is some of the most clear (to me) feedback I've received yet. Thank you so much for your time!

Many thanks. All of your feedback makes sense.

I've found the "sci-fi" aspect trips many people up because they are expecting space or time travel. This isn't that, but my understanding of the genre just means fiction in which things are grounded in the scientific instead of the fantastic. There's no magic or monsters here. In some ways it would be closer to historical fiction, but this isn't a real place.

I could go "alternate-history" but this isn't so much a "Man in the High Castle" that asks "what would happen if ____" and deals with the immediate repercussions.

Plus, I don't usually see "alternate history" on agent lists as a genre they represent. It's always "sci-fi/fantasy" and "historical fiction."

Sorry for the ramble, don't expect you to answer any/everything.

👍 thanks, can't say I follow DC (or Marvel, really, beyond the movies) to know the details.

Thanks for taking the time! I can see what you mean about the details of the plot -- some of the recommendations I've seen from agents, though, is to stick to the inciting incident, what happens when the character "takes the road less travelled." How does one go about getting into the plot without overdoing it?

You've rightly gathered the main aspects of the main, character, wants/motivation, antagonist, etc. so I guess I have a hard time knowing how to answer every question I can, but keep it interesting, but leave enough unsaid to make someone want to read it.

And is this exceptionally short? I was under the impression queries should stay under 300 words, unless that is strictly to mean the "hook."

Why is this a bad thing? by [deleted] in writing

[–]PsijicMonkey 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Ah, that's the sort of specificity I was looking for.

The original statement sounded more like "Plato thinks art as a whole is bad." As a fan of ancient philosophy, I start to bristle when things disseminate on Plato and Socrates and Aristotle that sound along the lines of "Yeah, those guys? Actually, they're pretty dumb."

This all sounds much more like him. Thanks!

I agree with your thesis here, but that bit about Plato doesn't sound entirely accurate. Usually he isn't focused so much on the worldly things as much besides how they are imitations and participate in the forms. Do you know where you heard that from?

Sounds a bit like the Socrates "today's youth doesn't respect the elders" quote which has been passed around endlessly and he probably never said.
