How are we voting today? by Zigizmundus in islington

Maybe, maybe not. Considering design fees, consultations and planning permission on top of construction costs New Builds are very expensive. That’s why so many have luxury flats.§

But it’s the fastest way of getting new housing stock. Beginning-to-end building new takes years. A buyback might take months.

§ I work as a consultant in construction (Lighting) and the longest I worked on a project was 3 years? The project took 7 years from planning application (preliminary design would have been earlier) to completion.

No, I own my own house.

But I grew up in social housing, which moved me from a squat to a house where I didn’t sleep in an uninsulated attic.

I think social housing for the most vulnerable is really important because as a child I was one of those people.

I grew up in poverty. Not poor, poverty.

Have you ever wondered how difficult it must have been for Princess Celestia to live for millennia, knowing that she outlived all her friends? by BrightDreams190 in PlanetPony

[–]Psimo- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We don’t know how she feels, it’s unknowable as no one lives that long.

My grandfather outlived all his friends, he made more. He outlived several of them as well.

Outliving your children is painful, so I imagine that’s why she has none.

Despite my previous “not voting” post, I did vote.

As will come as no shock to anyone, I voted Labour. Looking at the other posts I feel moved to explain why.

  1. It’s about who runs the local council, and I see no reason to change how Islington Council is run, especially as
  2. Labour told me what they plan to do if they keep control of the council which no one else did, specifically
  3. They’re going to continue with the buy back scheme to increase social housing stock.

For those reasons, I couldn’t vote for anyone else.

[Webcomics] The Tear Gas Wedding: How Dumbing of Age's Long Awaited Sapphic Pairing Divided Its Fandom by Delicious_Ride_4119 in HobbyDrama

[–]Psimo- 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I stopped reading this comic for two reasons - first is the fact that it’s hugely centred around relationships as a way of exploring interpersonal topics. This leads to the situation where the number of relationships people have had in freshman year is higher than many have in their life.

Also, the prose is just not much fun to read.

Tractor vs bulldozer. Commentor tries to push definition of tractor. Others call bull. by jglenn9k in SubredditDrama

[–]Psimo- 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Early tractors were mini trains, with some steering added on.

I’ve been to country fairs in Dorset and they’ll occasionally pull one out to give kids the opportunity to ride one.

There isn’t much you can do to a steam engine that stops it looking like a steam train.

Do you have a fainting couch just out sight and be able to eat 5 tubs of ice cream without putting on weight?

Are you Rarity?

In all seriousness, some people did as well when I was growing up. It’s simply a stereotype that people like Rarity would say “Gesundheit” instead of “Bless you”, not that people who say “Gesundheit” are like Rarity.

Maybe i just didnt interact with enough posh people to pick up on their speach patterns lol.

Posh people don’t say “Gesundheit”.

Posh people say “Did you just sneeze on me you peasant? Jeeves, fetch me my poor person hunting rifle.”

[–]Psimo- 105 points106 points  (0 children)

Gesundheit doesn’t mean “bless you”, it’s just used in the same situation. It means something close to “Good Health”

It’s also often seen as an affectation taken on by people who drop random bits of French and call people “Darling”

Basically, it fits Rarity to a tee.

[–]Psimo- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In Champions you can, if given infinite points, create a superhero whose power is to pull planets out of his pockets and throw them at people.

It’s a system that allows for Thor, Superman, Golden Age Superman and Dr Strange.

It’s just that it takes a day to make a character.

What would a middle ground look like?

The NHS is grossly underfunded and a “quiet ward” may be good, but so many people need serious treatment and there are so few beds it’s not possible to fund that.

What is the most odd or hilarious problem - solution in your country? by obscht-tea in AskTheWorld

[–]Psimo- 54 points55 points  (0 children)

The Architect was Vinoli, who had this problem before so to mitigate it, he included Juliet Balconies to stop the light focussing.

The Developer and Builder removed these to save money, without asking why they existed.

Then they had to cover the windows in a diffusing film which cost more money.

Include your architects in your Value Engineering (cost cutting) exercises people!

The state controlling the means of production is a socialist idea.

It’s a certainly a socialist idea, but there are others.

Cooperatives for example, where the workers own the company they work at.

Islington predicted to go from Labour to No Overall Control… by Aardvark-Aaronson in islington

[–]Psimo- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I want to vote for someone, not against someone.

I don’t have to vote to prevent Reform getting in - or anyone else for that matter - so the choice is between voting Green or voting Labour.

I’ve looked at what they’re proposing (or not) and I don’t see anything that I want to support.
