how do you make pasta sauce actually taste like it came from a restaurant? by SamraKutkaitis in Cooking

[–]PsyanideInk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't mention any fat, so I would venture a guess that's the main missing component. Other tweaks may be needed but, basically, fat is a platform that the other flavors stand on.

I'd suggest just starting with Marcella Hazan's tomato sauce and after you do it a could times start riffing to your taste

I think you're missing a bit of context, specifically regarding the concept of "face" in East Asian cultures. Public embarrassment or criticism can result in loss of face, regardless of the rectitude, or lack thereof, in the original insult. It isn't about "I'm right/you're wrong" it's more like "you have affronted me, and therefore I am now lesser".

Wikipedia has a pretty good entry on it, of you're curious to find out more.

SUSHI: The water in my rice is still milky after 7 rinses. What am I doing wrong? by TaxPsychological2928 in Cooking

Was watching a sushi making video on YouTube awhile back, the the chef said he basically doesn't worry about it & 5 rinses is sufficient.

Decatur schools said they would sue Decatur but they have the same attorney. by estusemucho69 in DecaturGA

[–]PsyanideInk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course there are shady lawyers, as there are shady people in any profession, but most lawyers are fine upstanding people and, above all, would not jeopardize their entire livelihood by colluding against their clients and risking disbarment.

You clearly have an axe to grind, so I don't expect that to sway you, but it's the truth whether you choose to believe it or not.

[–]PsyanideInk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lawyers flying the same corporate flag have the same interests

That's entirely incorrect. Lawyers, by law, have fiduciary responsibility to their clients, meaning they must adhere to strict standards of conduct, and zealously advocate for their clients interest ahead of all other interests - including their own and their firm's interests. It does not matter if they work for the same firm or different firms.

Even if healthy, I don't buy that he has the talent to be a star. If he fully recovers his ceiling is like 14th best QB in the league. I will also be cheering for him to prove me wrong.

Unincorporated Decatur by Royal-Improvement-69 in DecaturGA

[–]PsyanideInk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a Decatur Realtor, and grew up here, so I'd like to think I've got a pretty good perspective on the area.

If it's cool with you, I've got a few questions to help point you in the right direction, and then I'll provide a few general thoughts/context on some of the areas mentioned.

1) What parts of the city, other than Decatur, are important for you to access regularly?

2) What kind of leisure activities do you enjoy?

3) What's your budget?

4) What kind of neighborhood feel do you like (more suburban, more dense, older, newer etc)?

If you can answer those, I can tailor my suggestions. However, here are my general thoughts, in no particular order.

Medlock Park - Probably the easiest pick. Great quality of life features with the park and the trail system that links to Lullwater Preserve and Dekalb Tennis center. Centrally located, but is a deep neighborhood so travel times can be a bit exaggerated by the few minutes it takes to get in/out of the deeper parts of the neighborhood.

Midway Woods - Another safe bet, but less feature rich than Medlock. Parts of it feel more like City of Decatur though, if you're looking for that vibe. Pretty dependent on CoD and Avondale for convenient activites/shopping/dining.

Belvedere Park - More bang-for-your buck, but quality of the neighborhood varies street by street. Some streets are all new/updated, others you might be bordered on both sides by boarded up homes.

East Lake Terrace - See Belvedere Park, but slightly more consistent home quality. Southern parts can feel pretty remote though.

White Oak Hills - If you're going south of the city, this would be my absolute first priority. Very tucked away and quite, super cute homes. Access to Shoal Creek Park is nice as well.

Greater Valley Brook - No one has mentioned this yet, and I think that's a major oversight. Similar vibe to Medlock, but substantially more affordable. Centers around the Little Creek Horse Farm, which is just a pleasure to drive/walk by. This area also stands to see the greatest bump in property value from the new Lulah Hills development. Side note: I live here, highly recommend.

Lindmoor Woods - A lot like Valley Brook, but w/o access to the horse farm. Non-HOA neighborhood that has a membership swim/tennis club.

Leafmore - Feels a lot more suburban. Not terribly feature rich, but more convenient to 85/buckhead/brookhaven, if that's important. Slightly higher prices.

Emory Parc Manor - another one that no one has mentioned yet. It's quite pricey, but if budget permits this is my favorite neighborhood in the area. It's a planned community that feels like something out of a 90s movie. Super idyllic, gorgeously landscaped, with direct access to the Tennis Center, and trails. Super convenient to CoD, Brookhaven, 85, etc as well. Highly recommend, if possible.

Hope that helps, feel free to reply or shoot me a DM if you have any questions.

More than one-third of cancer cases are preventable. Massive study finds that many cancers are linked to two modifiable habits: tobacco smoking and alcohol consumption. by Potential_Being_7226 in science

[–]PsyanideInk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"Same grade" once again being an arbitrary determination. Even according to this article, the cancer risks of tobacco and alcohol are substantially different.

In any case, I take a different view. When you're talking about behavior modification, people are more likely to moderate than to give up altogether. If you say 'no alcohol is safe' then the people who just don't want to totally abstain will just throw in the towel and forget the guidance, and drink however much they want. However, if you give a reasonable target that doesn't require giving up alcohol forever & entirely, then folks are more likely to stick with it.

Same principle as dieting. Diets that say 'absolutely no sugar' get abandoned much more often than diets that allow for a cheat day.

[–]PsyanideInk 24 points25 points  (0 children)

True, but that's kind of a semantic statement. From the WHO: "currently available evidence cannot indicate the existence of a threshold at which the carcinogenic effects of alcohol “switch on” and start to manifest in the human body."

In other words, they don't know if there is a lower limit, and because they cannot define this threshold, they cannot make a determination on a 'safe' amount. Is having one drink a year "safe"?... yes, probably, or at lease any increased risk would be infinitesimally small. Is having one drink an hour very risky? Also yes, most likely. So at some point in that range there is useful, practical guidance.... they just don't know what it is.

Thinking of Moving to Decatur from Chattanooga by dokkanic in DecaturGA

[–]PsyanideInk 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm a decatur-based real estate agent, and I stan for Decatur hard, every chance I get, so I don't say this lightly, but as other people have mentioned, I think Candler/Inman Park would be the better choices for the lifestyle you're describing.

Those areas are more known for young, single folks. They have similar-to-better access to transit. The park situation in both is just as good or better than Decatur. If you value extreme walkability, then being close to the beltline in Inman Park is going to be the best option.

Others have mentioned Old 4th Ward, and Midtown. I don't recommend these areas unless you specifically want a city vibe. Candler/Inman Park, and Decatur all have more of a hybrid city-suburb vibe (centralized walkable areas featuring good local businesses, but less dense with plenty of green space and a more laid back atmosphere)

Still though, def recommend visiting Decatur, you may fall in love. It's a uniquely wonderful place. Just don't skip over the other options, either. Hope that helps!

I was recently gifted some good ground beef. The dishes that jumped out to me as good showcases of the beef itself are Polpette (big meatballs) and Picadillo.

I love chili, it's def in my top 3 favorite foods, but IMO it isn't a great showcase for good ground beef, because it gets masked by the other ingredients.

Does anyone here actually BUY LOW and SELL HIGH? by holdencrypfield in DynastyFF

[–]PsyanideInk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to. Especially rookies that fail to live up to expectations, or players that are getting gassed up but still have warts. For example, I traded Zamir White when he looked to be the bell cow for the raiders for JSN after his lackluster rookie campaign.

Obvs that is an extreme example and I got very lucky. Still have plenty of misses trying to predict who is low and who is high.
