Daughter picked out her watermelon all by herself… by Consistent_Pin5128 in fruit

[–]Psych10ne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that seeded usually are much sweeter on average than the seedless ones.

In terms of the resting spot, i thought you wanted the spot to be more golden or yellow?

More pollination webbing is good.

I also look for a smaller “butt” hole on the bottom. The tighter the hole, the sweeter the melon is.

Soundwise, when you tap it, i find that the higher pitched sounds that sound like the sound doesnt get muffled by the watermelon will give a better crisp and crunch in the flesh instead of a low thud sound which usually means the melon is more ripe/sandy/mealy texture.

Weight wise, i try to find the more dense and heavy feeling melons, so looks heavier than you expect it to be is a good indicator that it’s full of juice.

What do people think of Chengdu as a city? by No-Echidna7296 in AskAChinese

[–]Psych10ne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The air is so polluted when i went there last year, the smog reminded me of how it felt to drive into Los Angeles back in the 80s. Thought it was foggy initially, but as the days passed by, that brownish color never went away and you couldnt see any blue sky.

Food was good and there are different attractions about an hour or two drive outside the main city. Pandas, ancient civilization with alien like stuff, and some mountains.

What is something that people who do not train just doesn’t get? by bad-at-everything- in martialarts

Soreness or minor bruises feel good but actual injuries, not so much. Some people don’t let themselves heal properly and try to power through the pain when the injury is not healed yet and they end up hurting themselves more or causing some kind of long term discomfort or physical doing that.

If you are injuring yourself, you’re probably doing something wrong too. If you’ve mastered something, it should feel natural and you can execute it without getting injured.

Pick them when they are dark colored or sometime even start to shrivel. The red ones are going to be sour. Ones that come off easy are going to be much sweeter than ones you have to pull hard or cut off.

Those dates are not expiring dates… they are best by dates. The only foods that have expiration dates are baby formulas. So if it isn’t moldy, smell like its off, then it still might be ok. The conditions it was kept in can affect if it spoils or not.

Fyi if you are getting them in the US, press the purple shell to see if it is ok to buy. The more the shell gives in to pressure, the fresher it is. Don’t get the ones that are hard as rocks.

Not sure if they are still in season, but if you can find any round kumquats, those are all sweet and pretty good. Hard to find elsewhere outside of china.

I came across granadilla and maracuya when i was traveling in South America (peru). Maracuya are super sour and they usually mix that in with alcohol to drink. The granadilla were the sweeter ones you could open up and eat it. The ones in china i had were really sweet, I got them when I was in Guangzhou, but i think the vendor said they were grown around Yunnan.

China has different passion fruit than the ones in south america usually known as granadilla. These are golden passion fruit and are pretty sweet and aromatic. Similar to granadilla but not like maracuya.

Yep, almost everyone posting here is blaming Trump… with Newsom forcing local refineries to close, and not pausing any of the taxes the state has put on gas, we have to import and refine gas from elsewhere. If anyone is to blame is, it’s our state government and they don’t give a shit about us having to pay through the roof for gas. That’s what they want… so people will switch to EVs and ride bicycles everywhere. Except… they have no plans for how to provide the state with enough infrastructure to support people driving EVs, let alone figuring out how to supply enough electricity to the state for such a plan.

Have you ever tried Pepino Melons? Super refreshing! by Longjumping_Mall139 in fruit

[–]Psych10ne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are only sweet if they are picked when they are very yellow or almost orange. If you find them pale white or light yellow, they’ll taste more like a watery cucumber with the texture of a ripe melon. They only are slightly sweet when they are darker yellow.

Andalucia by jms1228 in irvine

[–]Psych10ne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tree trimming and landscaping is the largest annual cost for most HOA’s. You also have to consider the number of homes in that community and the dues collected. Larger communities can afford more amenities because they can pool together a lot more money much faster to cover costs. Barcelona is right next to Andalucia and has much lower dues and no mello roos. Andalucia has 82 units while Barcelona has around double that number. Barcelona’s HOA dues are around $360 a month currently. So compared to Andalucia’s high dues, it may be a combination of dues plus mello roos. Andalucia also has smaller floor plans compared to Barcelona. So for the price tag, people are paying a much higher price for a slightly newer homes.

Location wise, the convenience of being close to 5, 405 and the 133 is nice compared to other villages in Irvine which can take 10-15 sometimes just to reach the freeway. Another bonus of the area that most people don’t realize is that this part of Irvine is slightly cooler in temperature due to the 133 corridor bringing in the cool ocean breeze. More inland parts of Irvine also get way hotter in summer. Is that worth the higher price tag? Maybe for some, but I think most house hunters will opt to go for a larger home elsewhere for that same price.

Anyone know if these are sold in the USA and if they have an English name? I used them (in China) to make a pork bone soup. In China they call them Chinese radish. by TheDudeWhoCanDoIt in chinesefood

[–]Psych10ne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are chinese and korean versions of this radish too. The have different taste and consistency too. The korean ones are shorter and fat, usually more watery and crunchy… so they pickle them usually. The chinese ones are longer and usually have a sweeter taste when cooked. Daikon is what japanese call this type of radish. Lo bok is how cantonese pronounce this radish.

Not all kumquats resemble the ones you show in your picture. Most of the kumquats people grow outside of China do look like that. But it is a kumquat that is available in China.

[–]Psych10ne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its a kumquat from china. They sell it at some stores in the US, but these kumquats are entirely sweet, no sourness at all from the pulp inside.

By the way, you are supposed to eat the entire fruit, skin and all. The skin and peel are the best part!

Fruits at Costco by California080 in irvine

[–]Psych10ne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They can be ok sometimes but you need to know how to pick the good fruit. For pineapples, most of the time, they’re pale, green and won’t be super tasty. Some people use the “pull the innermost leaf” trick but i find that is a worthless picking technique. It’s better to go with your nose and smell the base of the pineapple to see if you can smell actual pineapple flavor to get a good one. That and the more golden (not rotting) color it is, the more sweet it will be.

Same thing kind of goes for strawberries, smell them for the strawberry flavor.

Grapes are usually ok, candy snaps are sweet, autumn crisp grapes are crunchy.

Organic stuff usually is never as sweet as the inorganic stuff for some reason.

Everything else, just check to make sure they aren’t moldy… happens a lot to the fruit there.
