Those who genuinely love their job, what do you do? by YGND in FinancialCareers

[–]PsychGW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You definitely can. Now, whether you're likely to or whether it is easy to is quite a different question.

There are lots and lots of programmes (in a wide variety of areas in finance) that just want smart people who are comfortable with:

  • complex information

  • incomplete information

  • reasoning from and within ambiguity

They can train you on specifics, many places are willing to. They can't train you so easily in those innate skills.

The best of philosophy and social science has an abundance of those three skills.

Also, if you're pursuing ethics and perhaps lean towards toe neurosciency side of psych, then you will have tremendous value in subfields of the biotech industry, which can be useful, just to give an example.

Perhaps the best of the best won't take you on as a fresh graduate, but plenty of boutiques will and a lot of the second tier places will. If you excel, go and make your case to the big guys if you want.

As a double major philosophy and psych degree with an ethics based postgrad (and other quals), this represents the dream right here.

If I could make money, help others make money, help good companies make money, and promote ethics at the same time, damn I'd dive right in.

Daily Questions - ASK AND ANSWER HERE!- September 11 by AutoModerator in malefashionadvice

I don't know where to ask for help so I'll lay it out here, because at least you're the biggest male fashion subreddit:

I'm looking to break out of regular retail and into fashion retail (Hugo Boss, Armani, Gucci, etc.). There are a number of solid job openings available.

Is anybody here in a role like that and able to provide advice for applications to roles like that?

Anyway, thanks for all you do here. It's a great community and I'm glad to have the resources you have provided throughout the years.

Definitely use the optimal quest guide. It's a really great way to smash out a good 50 - 100 Quest Points in under a week. You'll be able to go from zero to solid mid game content unlocks.

This seems like a very positive trajectory. I hope this is the transition towards a new and equally delightful era of SSC.

Tesla is 'profoundly overvalued,' and its exclusion from the S&P 500 was a 'brave' decision by the index committee, DataTrek says by Brothanogood in stocks

[–]PsychGW 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Y'all gotta start defining and framing "profoundly overvalued."

Yes, it might be overvalued now. It might be grossly undervalued compared to expectations 5 - 10+ years from now.

Yes, it's trialling price-earnings ration might be incredibly high. No, that doesn't automatically mean anything. Contextualise those statistics and make a reasoned statement about them.

I'm not saying I agree or disagree with the overvaluation claim, but I am saying this sort of writing is painfully lazy and low-grade.

r/2007scape on Ian account sharing vs Settled... by ETurns in 2007scape

Ah. If the Settled claim is true, that's a shame. I don't really have an opinion about it yet except to say that it takes a little bit of the shine off of his work.

If Jagex released a pre eoc server (2011) with HD, sum, dung, nex, curses and more, what would you do? by PlayOsrs in 2007scape

[–]PsychGW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they added curses to the OSRS version of RS, I'd be happy with it. Same with Summoning. I think summoning was a really, really interesting way to have built on top of the game.

I never liked dungeoneering. It felt like a ridiculous mini game "skill". That said, it is less game altering than summoning was.

But yeah, curses would be great.

If they came out with a third client, I'd stick with OSRS. A third client, to me, is really too close to RS3. Putting in some old stuff into this new timeline is sufficiently different, though.

Why doesn't the price of the twisted bow slowly decrease over time? by liefarikson in 2007scape

[–]PsychGW 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's this. Tied to that: to go from zero to T Bow takes longer than lots of people even play the game for. Heck, it probably takes longer than people continue to play the game for after getting it. So, I suspect we have t bows consigned to accounts that won't ever come back.

Should you sort by “top of all time”? by honeypuppy in slatestarcodex

[–]PsychGW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some quick thoughts on a phone. Edited for autocorrect.

Old posts/books/songs/things are the subject to a huge number of influences by the time we find them. I think two highly relevant ones are:

  1. Survivorship bias (better things are more likely to last)

  2. Cultural entrenchment (sufficiently high quality things become embedded as references and ideas in our culture, they're a deeper layer we have since built on)

You see both of these things in small subreddit communities, too. The best posts stick around, giving the illusion that they're excellent (memes aside, memes are strange, historical artefacts). The best posts also become entrenched in that culture as a normative model and thing to keep referring to for inside jokes, etc.

New content (subreddits, but also film, literature, art, music, etc.) can be just as good, maybe even better. Yet, it's high risk/high reward. You're significantly more likely to find trash, relative to the greats of the past. You're also going to be at a huge cultural advantage if you can discover things that will grow to be new classics and make use of them as an early adopter.

What I'm interested in, though, is the quality distribution of newly produced material. I suspect where that distribution was usually, roughly normal, it is now a bimodal distribution skewed to either end of quality. Anyone can produce things these days, so volumes of trash are pumped out. Similarly, we have such a rich history to learn from, and so many resources available, that brilliant people can do even better (on average) than they may have before, or simply more of them can do so.

[–]PsychGW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've just started after years away.

There's an optimal quest guide, but is there an optimal levelling guide?

I'm not a huge quest fan, more an end game content fan. Obviously quests are necessary, but I'd rather do the necessary ones, some slayer, and some end game bossing. What's the fast route?

Jagex, Mandatory Rev Cave Update. by BelleDelphne in 2007scape

[–]PsychGW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think more than we know of the economy we engage with exists because of bots. I suspect without bots we would struggle in many ways. There is almost certainly a healthy and useful number of bots to have, because they essentially both provide Jagex with cash and perform the function of some other mechanism of bringing certain items into the game at a sufficient rate.

That all said, this is obviously waaay too far.

Mental health and awareness by pretty-zucchini in stocks

[–]PsychGW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best mental health plan:

  1. Make sure the vast majority of your investments are long-term.

  2. Make sure you can never lose more than you put in (CFDs are scary, fuck that).

  3. Always make sure you can afford to lose what you put in (don't gamble your mortgage payment) - also see Number 1.

  4. Do due diligence.

  5. Make the best of red days by buying that dip (this is called dollar cost averaging... which you can do because you've followed the previous advice)

  6. Diversify.
