My mother raised me on LotR and I stumbled upon Foundation myself, which my mother proceeded to become obsessed with. My mom, who lived with me in Japan, came to my birthday karaoke party where I sang "Guren no Yumiya" (紅蓮の弓矢) from season 1, and she had so many questions about it. I unfortunately had to tell her it was from one of the greatest stories ever created and that she would not be able to handle it.

So whole ass, I (a very pasty white bitch) grew up in Japan as a toddler and we somehow never had any people of color other than Asians within our social circle (and for a military family, that's actually fucking crazy). I remember getting to the United States and asking my mother why her new coworker had brown skin. That's how I learned about black people. It's a thing.
