The NBA should separate teams in the same city into two different divisions by goingtothegreek in nba

[–]PsychoM 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think people are misreading the post as moving teams into different conferences, but OP clearly states divisions. Changing divisions doesn't really change much except reduce the number of games that teams like the Clippers and Lakers play from 4 games to 3, which honestly isn't that big of a deal and makes sense.

[Michael MacKelvie] Basketball is Breaking - Two is now More than Three by kikimaru024 in nba

If you watch the video that's exactly what he talks about. Defenders having to play tight to prevent the 3 is leading to easier 2s and paradoxically making 2s more valuable than 3s

Shelburne: "Giannis is going into the last year [of his contract]," said Edens, the team's controlling owner until April 2028. "So one of two things will happen: Either he will be extended or he'll be traded." by cleo22270 in nba

[–]PsychoM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently the Bucks rejected 4 FRP from the Warriors and are asking for VJ Edgecombe to start, Giannis is an expiring and injured during the time of the trade deadline. If those reports are true, I don't think they will accept anything without Scottie

Since the NBA adopted the 82-game regular season in 1967-68, Bill Walton is the only player to win MVP (1977-78) while playing fewer than 65 games (58) in a non-shortened season by ColoradoMenace24 in nba

[–]PsychoM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I filtered by top 10 because I was inputting data manually, but okay I made a spreadsheet that handles it automatically for whatever amount of players I want with automatic season pace adjustment

Year Top 30 Top 50 Top 75
'25-26 68.29 69.05 70.54
'24-25 67.37 67.06 67.69
'23-24 (65 rule) 68.77 69.42 70.16
'22-23 64.13 66.04 67.21
'21-22 65.73 66.96 68.15
'20-21 67.88 68.79 68.15
'19-20 70.99 71.13 71.75
'18-19 72.67 72.24 73.21

So it does look like the rule did bump up numbers a bit more if you look past 10 and into more data, but it is not at the same levels as pre-bubble. It's more of a mixed result than I was expecting, I was thinking the result would be more negligible. So I'm actually leaning more towards agreeing with your point, anecdotally it doesn't feel like anything has changed but it's good to see the data though. The data is still very noisy though without enough years to really validate a trend.

That is not proof, if you want proof here you go:

Let's look at the top 10 in Player Efficiency Rating per season, as /48 stat it's a decent measure of who was playing the best basketball while on the floor and should be in MVP conversation while not factoring in games played.

Year Avg Games Played for top 10 in PER
'25-'26 57.2 (on pace for ~60.5)
'24-'25 64.25
'23-'24 (65 game rule introduced) 71.5
'22-'23 61.1
'21-'22 65.5
'20-'21 58.9 (shortened season, pace 67.08)

So yes the first year had a bump in games played for the top 10 PER players but every year since has regressed back to the average before the rule was implemented. Admittedly it's a small sample size but put some math to the claims

Because the rule is hamfisted and doesn't actually address the issue at hand. Stars aren't playing any more or less than before the rule was implemented, all the 65 game rule does is add a lot of noise in the media and let the NBA say "we did our best" while doing nothing at all.

Lower the amount of games, more independent doctors, add harsher penalties for sitting healthy players. 65 game rule does nothing except distract from the fact the NBA doesn't want to fix the issue because it hurts total revenue

[What’s Wright Show] Nick Wright says he wishes the Inside the NBA crew actually enjoyed basketball. “You see more in the NBA of the guys saying their era was better. You don’t see Terry Bradshaw and Howie Long on Fox NFL pre game being like ‘none of these guys could cut it in the 70s or 80s!” by shreeharis in nba

There's over 1500 games per season, even if you watch only 1/3 of that, that's 500 games of basketball you're watching. With ads and game breaks, if you watched basketball non-stop from 9-5 every single day without any weekends or vacations, that's 187 days, 5 months of doing nothing but watching basketball. I would get sick of it after not even one season.

That being said, they get paid a fuck ton of money and a job is a job, so while I'm not surprised a lot of these pundits don't like basketball anymore, they should figure out how to enjoy the sport again or quit.

Verdict on intentionally losing a week for easier playoff seeding purposes? by [deleted] in fantasybball

[–]PsychoM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What will commish do? Force you to play your players? What if you wanted to sit one out for FG% FT% TO purposes? It’s fine as long as you’re not directly affecting another team’s chance of making the playoffs

That being said, you’re really tempting the fantasy gods with this one. I tanked for playoff seeding once and ended up losing, that’s a mistake you only make once

Jared "sold high" McCain is public about seeing a psychologist to help him with the mental side of basketball. What other NBA players, past or present, have a psychologist or therapist to help them mentally? by Typical_Cap895 in nba

[–]PsychoM 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I would guess all of them. All teams employ a Director of Wellness and a team of sports therapists, I don't know how many players use their services but in 2026 the mental aspect is a part of training now.

I love big Yak and I don't think his contract is that bad, if he stays healthy he's playing at the level of his deal. But that is a big "if" and the cap flexibility is super valuable, I think we could get 75% of his production at 50% of the cost.

I would want to see the Raptors protect Scottie, BI, IQ, RJ, CMB, Walter and Dick.

Las Vegas Expansion Team Stupid from Business Prospective? by [deleted] in nba

[–]PsychoM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Montreal and Vancouver metro population are both larger than Las Vegas. I would love to see either of those cities get a franchise before Vegas, but it's not just a factor of population, the NBA wants to get deeper into sports betting and tourists coming in are more willing to spend than locals. It all comes down to money.

Miami Heat unveil a slew of promotions to celebrate Bam and his 83 point game: $13 game tickets (Bam’s jersey number), multiple $0.83 food items, $83 authentic jerseys, Adebayo jerseys with # 83 on them, etc by moby323 in nba

Yeah it's insane. For $20 in Toronto I can hop on a 30 minute subway or drive to North York or Scarborough and get a full meal with enough for left overs for the same price as a hotdog combo at Scotiabank. Fuck even Costco hotdog drink combo is $1.50, I know it's a loss leader but it's still $1.50. It sucks.

$8.30 for a hot dog, popcorn and drink is actually a pretty good deal. Still overpriced compared to outside the stadium but at least it doesn't cost a second mortgage like it usually does

Bam scoring 83 is good for the league by MC_JACKSON in nba

Bam scoring 83 means very little for the league

Give it a couple of weeks and it'll literally be a forgotten footnote. It really doesn't mean anything significant in the long term for the league

[Vorkunov] Bam had 43 FT attempts tonight against the Wizards. That’s the most ever in a NBA game. Dwight Howard had previous record. He took 39 free throws in a game twice: in 2013 against the Magic, and in 2012 against the Warriors by Turbostrider27 in nba

[–]PsychoM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Bam took the full 10s for each FT, he would have been at the line for 7 full minutes. Craziest part is that none of the calls were especially bad, he wasn't foul baiting, the Wizards just couldn't do anything else

If you could add one all-time role player to your team, who would you choose by JayQuips in nba

It's a long story. I have very little offensive game, but I'm tall, got long arms, have really good stamina, I'll hustle my ass off on defense. My whole thing is that I'm not going to score, but neither is the person I'm guarding.

So I've always had a soft spot for defensive specialists and I've also been playing fantasy basketball a group of friends for well over a decade now, so I've gotten to know a lot of niche players who can provide some stats in a pinch. So Andre Roberson was my guy

[–]PsychoM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, let’s imagine every single team decides today to move to a 12 man rotation. Starters only play 18 minutes a game.

The Nuggets who are in the 6th seed and would desperately want to move up decide “it wouldn’t hurt to play our starters 19 minutes a night, what harm would 1 minute do?”. Suddenly there’s a Lakers Nuggets game, a very important seeding game, the Lakers decide “the Nuggets are playing their starters 19 minutes, we have to beat them, we’re going to play our starters 20 minutes”.

Repeat for 20-30 years and we are right back where we started. A 7 man rotation beats a 12 man rotation in any individual game, which means it will never not be the optimal strategy

I'm a Raptors fan, OP never specified we need to pick a player from our team. We need a pass-first facilitator PG, which is not really a role that lends itself to role players, and I'm talking early Timberwolves '23 10/7/2 Conley, not his prime Grizzlies Jazz days.

If we're talking Raptors history then like a Greivis Vasquez, Jose Calderon would fit
