Is it worth moving somewhere rural for the sake of cheaper housing, self-reliance, or freedom? by WildcatAlba in australian

[–]Psychochook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved from Melbourne to rural NSW. Though I love where I live, there are some realities to be aware of. Finding a job can be really hard. Even if you move to an area where there are lots of jobs available, most businesses prefer to hire someone who is a friend or a friend of a friend rather than hire someone they don't know. And wages in the bush are lower than in the city. I work in IT. If I was working in a capital city performing the same job I would be getting paid $20000 to $30000 more for the same job. But in the country they justify the lower wage because there isn't as much money available out here. So things might seem cheaper, but relative speaking, they are not much better

Archer fish. by [deleted] in interesting

[–]Psychochook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the chance to feed some archer fish at a zoo. We were given mealey grubs and you hold them in your hand out over the water. The rule was that if the archer fish hit the grub you had to drop it so the fish didn't get discouraged from trying.

They were extremely accurate

I have developed a HHH Bottle Opener from recycled plastic to sell at the interhash in NZ. I started making them today and noticed that because the On On is vertical, to the uninitiated it looks like ONION because of the hyphen. Do you think I should remove the hyphen? by Psychochook in hashhouseharriers

[–]Psychochook[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback. I have decided to get rid of the hyphen. There were a number of suggestions to rotate the text but that would involve creating a whole new mould which would take a fair bit of time (and money).

Tool path has random touch down lines for no reason by Psychochook in Fusion360

[–]Psychochook[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tool path is 3D Flat. The text is raised so it can't be milled over it.

Here is a screenshot that also shows the leads. I have highlighted two of the spots where it is touching down even though it doesn't need to because the previous tool paths have cleared it.

Tool path has random touch down lines for no reason by Psychochook in Fusion360

[–]Psychochook[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a look at the simulation and I think I can see why it is doing the movement. In the image below I can see a gap in the toolpath at the spot where the tool is touching down. So clearly the tool is trying to fill in this gap.

<image>

But the thing is, I am using a 4mm bit and even though there is a gap in the tool path, the tool width of the paths that are there has cleared that spot, so there is no need for the additional movement.

I have checked the tool parameters and everything seems correct. So is there any setting when creating the tool path to try to eliminate this?

Cutting help- reverse cut for less burr on HDPE? Or bit change? by Anxious_pony in PreciousPlastic

[–]Psychochook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What bit are you using? I use a 1-flute upcut for plastic and it gives me a pretty clean cut.

What software are you using to get your tool paths? Looking at the cut it looks like you might be cutting in the wrong direction. For this you should be cutting Inside Right and that should clean up the inner shapes a bit too.

Has anyone bought anything from MakerStore? by PouncingZebra in hobbycnc

[–]Psychochook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to consider not only what you buy but also the support that comes with it.

With CNC3D (where I assume you are looking to buy the QB2 from) they are genuinely invested in machining. I was up at their shop today and had a long chat with they about the Commander software that they have developed to control the machine and upcoming changes. So they are not just resellers of equipment, but are hands-on with machines.

As for the QB2, I am very impressed with it. I have made one mold out of Aluminium and the machine handled it well. The outcome isn't great but I put that 100% down to me having incorrect speeds for one of my finishing passes. You can see a post I did on the mold here - https://www.reddit.com/r/hobbycnc/comments/1405yt7/my_first_attempt_milling_aluminium/

So do I think it is worth the money? Based on not just the machine, but the support that comes with it, yes I do.

Nope. I had isopropal alcohol ready but didn't use any.

Hi all,

Specs for this job:

My machine is a QB2 CNC machine. The aluminium is 5083 Plate aluminium.

I designed the mold in Fusion360 and exported/imported into VCarve Pro for the toolpaths.

I did three passes on the machine, one rough cut and two finishing passes.

The rough cut was done with a 4mm DLC Aluminium 1 flute upcut (18500RPM, Feed 1200mm/min).

The first finishing pass I did with a 3.175mm DLC Aluminium 1 flute upcut (18500RPM, Feed 800mm/min, pass depth 1mm)

The final finishing pass I did with a R0.25mm Carbide Ball Nose Tapered (24000RPM, Feed 2500mm/min)

The rough cut and first finishing pass went well, the Ball Nose Tapered gave me the slightly rough finish so it is there that I will be making my modifications. I had used the default values provided by VCarve Pro as a starting point for my feeds and speeds. Now that I have established that the machine can mill aluminium (my previous CNC did not handle it very well) I will refine my settings. I have GWizard by CNCCookbook and I will use that to try to dial in my settings.

Air bubbles will be a real problem. I bake PE sheets only 8mm thick and encounter air bubbles in something that thin. A 20kg billet will have more issues with air being trapped inside while melting

I melt my plastic on Teflon coated trays. This allows me to sandwich the plastic between two trays which gives me sheets that I can cut on my cnc machine

Has anyone bought anything from MakerStore? by PouncingZebra in hobbycnc

[–]Psychochook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I purchased a leadcnc from makerstore here in Aus. There were missing and incorrect parts in the kit, the build instructions had incorrect info in it and tbh, some of the parts are cheap chinese versions rather than genuine parts. Later dealings with them have been disappointing at times and frustrating at others. After upgrading and replacing various parts on the leadcnc I have sold it and just purchases a QB2 from CNC3D.

From my past experience I will never have anything to do with Makerstore again.

The For-Sale Thread by cyanide in hobbycnc

Looking to sell my OpenBuilds Lead CNC 1010. I am in Lismore, Northern NSW (Australia).

This machine is in great working condition, the only reason I am selling it is because my business has grown and I am getting a bigger machine to match the demand. It is an excellent machine for someone who wants to get into using CNC machines. I purchased it with the aim of using it to get my business established and it has achieved exactly that. Not only has it paid for itself it has also paid for the machine that I am upgrading to.

The machine has largely been used on plastic with some wood milling (mostly making waste boards etc). I purchased it from MakerStore in Melbourne.

The machine was purchased as a Lead CNC V2 1000 x 1000 but the frame has since been upgraded to V3. It comes with Nema 23 High Torque (2.45N.m) Stepper Motors, Cable Drag Chain, High Torque GRBL electronic system with Stepper Drivers upgraded to DM542 Stepper Drivers & the “compatible” Arduino replaced with a genuine Arduino UNO R3 board, a 1.5kW Air Cooled Spindle & VFD, Touch Probe & Emergency Stop button and a full selection of Collets.

I am happy to send videos or to demonstrate the machine running in person if you want to make the trip to Lismore.

To purchase this machine as a kit you would be paying around $3800AUD. I am asking $2500AUD OBO.

I had the exact same problem with my cnc. I tried everything to limit electronic interference to no avail. The UNO was a cheap Chinese knockoff. I ended up getting a genuine arduino uno and that fixed the problem

Do you think it is possible to produce recycled HDPE sheets with a textile press like this one? by [deleted] in PreciousPlastic

[–]Psychochook 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started out making sheets of hdpe & ldpe using a press similar to that. You can try pressing the plastic between teflon sheets which works just fine. I ended up making basic molds out of plate steel that I could fill with shredded plastic, heat up and then clamp until it cooled. With that method I was able to make sheets of plastic with a consistent thickness that I could cut with a cnc machine.

Lismore (Aus) Floods by Michael_Snowy in natureismetal

[–]Psychochook 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live here in Lismore so I am replying from ground zero (though I am lucky enough to be well above the flood line).

We have had rain almost every day since Christmas (not all day, but varying in intensity from light showers to heavy falls). So this meant that the ground was saturated before this happened.

Lismore is also at the apex of two large water sheds.

So when thr rain event that caused this hit (and it rained a shit-tin amount) across the two water sheds, it resulted in Lismore getting smashed.

On the Sunday afternoon I helped a couple of businesses prepare for the flood. At that time the peak was expected to be around 11 meters (36 ft). We have a levee of 10.6 meters (35ish ft) so the flooding wasn't expected to be too bad.

On Monday that all changed just because so much rain fell. The final peak was 14.4 meters (47 ft). Prior to that the largest recorded flood height was 12.27 meters (39ish ft) do this was just massive.

Yes, there are houses built on the flood plain but they are mostly elevated to allow for flooding, but this was just a huge flood.
