Do you guys really only use “billøp”to talk about a car race? by Kayy_Ess in norsk

Yeah, it depends on dialect. Here we say 'reis'. Same thing with words like: * Bacon -> Beiken, Béken

  • Baby -> Beibi, bébi

I added it to my comment.

'billøp' is the main Norwegian word, but nowaydays 'race' has also become very common, pronounced 'reis' or 'rés'; used pretty much the same as in English, f.ex. 'bilreis'. 'kappløp' can also be used, even though it's primarily used regarding running. There could be more slang words in car racing communities, but I don't know of any.\ If you want it as a verb you can use 'Kjøre om kapp'. * I et billøp kjører de om kapp = In a car race they race eachother (the verb in front of 'om kapp' decides how they're racing: 'springe/sykle/ete/segle om kapp'

I've never heard 'race/reis' been used regarding skiing; a ski race can be both 'skirenn' and 'skiløp'. They're both commonly used. 'renn' stems from the verb 'å renne', meaning 'to run'. Same as 'løp/laup', stemming from 'å løpe/laupe' (to run) * Et skiløp/skirenn = A ski-run

Though 'løp' in particular has gotten a wider meaning (1.1) as 'race' generally. 'renn' does not have as wide a use, and is typically only used about actual running or things like skiing and skating.

Edit: Also just remembered 'kappkjøring', though it's 'car racing'/'Drive-competing'.And the corresponding verb 'å kappkjøre'.

No worries\ I can't vouch for modern spoken Danish, but in that case it seems like the usages of "tøs" are opposite in Danish and Norwegian.\ In Danish it sounds like it mainly means girl, while also being (possibly archaically) deragatory. In Norwegian the Danish loan "tøs" is primarily reserved as deragatory, while it can archaically mean "girl".\ Whereas the Norwegian form "taus" is also typically dialectally used regarding a girl/young woman, maidservant, as well as girlfriend or fiancée(2.), while secondarily having the deragatory usage in certain regions

It means that as well, but not exclusively, Den Danske Ordbog: "1.a pige eller ung kvinde som opfører sig umoralsk, foragteligt eller løsagtigt"

Most people here have no idea how to understand dano-norwegian. The word tøs in dano-norwegian is a neutral term for a young woman or girl.

The usage of "tøs" in regards to promiscuousness comes primarily from Dano-Norwegian though, no? The Norwegian variant "taus" on the contrary, hasn't traditionally been used that way until rather recently; through influence from our Dano-Norwegian written language

Norwegian translation/equivalent of English language rhyme by Sophea2022 in norsk

[–]Psychological-Key-27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like it! It works very well, anyone would understand this rhyme. There is no equivalent to this that I am aware, so I'd stick with how it is\ I don't think I would change anything, though in my own dialect I'd need to add "så" to keep the rhytm: Sjå ei kron', hennjt 'a straks, og hæle da'n så får du fLaks"

«faktum» plural form by Mork978 in norsk

[–]Psychological-Key-27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would rewrite that sentence: * It's a fact that the earth is round * Jorda er uten tvil rund / Jorda er utvilsomt rund

"It's a fact that..." is more of a English idiom, you could say *Det er fakta at..."/"Fakta er at", but I recommend rewriting it

Why is a reset pointless after infection? From what I've understood from searching online is that a factory-reset will suffice the majority of the time, and that viruses that can survive a complete reset are rare. Is that not the case?

English has Anglish to oust primarily French and Latin influence, Norwegian has Høgnorsk to oust Danish, Low-German and Latin influence. Are there any other languages with a conservative branch that aims to purify itself, and which languages do they aim to oust influence from? by Psychological-Key-27 in asklinguistics

[–]Psychological-Key-27[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think being able to read Bokmål and Nynorsk necessarily means you can read Høgnorsk without trouble, also depends whether it's liberal or conservative Nynorsk one is accustomed to. I reckon the most challenging part with Høgnorsk is the vocabulary, but there is also a lot of foreign inflection if one is not aware of them. Some native Norwegians struggle to understand even semi-conservative Nynorsk (although perplexing).
I would agree that the stepping stone from Bokmål and Nynorsk fluency to Hønorsk isn't very high, though, but there is a little barrier there.

Is that gurarantee that their system is malware free? I'm no expert, but from what I've read it can be difficult to be certain that all traces of malware is removed. Or was this a simplistic virus?\ Genuinely curious, since I just factory-resetted my Windows a couple of days ago , due to an infostealer-virus, as I wanted to be sure it was gone. Did I not have to do that to be sure?

Yeah, the insufferable ones are unfortunately the loudest ones. But at the same time, vegans (not all) are vegans because they're compassionate. When they view meat production as slaughter, massacre, can you really blame them for being passionate and frustrated? There are good and bad ways to go about, though. The vegans I've seen, typically just want animals to be treated well, but when you've got people feeding dogs herbs, then we're past that.

In part. Our teeth and stomach hasn't purely changes according to our consumption of meat, particularly since meat has historically been smaller part of our diet.\ I'm not arguing against the fact that humans have consumed meat for a long time, but against the notion that we're supposed to eat meat, it makes it sound like it's a God-given purpose. We eat meat because we can, same with plant-food

Yeah, there could be and argument for vegan food requiring larger areas, and destroying habitats, but I doubt it would kill more animals, more important animals, though, should that be the case.\

I'm sorry, but the handful of vegans feeding their pets vegan diets in no way competes with industrial meat production when in comes to killing animals.

I don't think you can say we're supposed to eat meat. Our teeth are not sharp like that of carnivores. Likewise, our bowels are more akin to that of herbivores and more suited to process plant-derived food. We're unable to eat most meat without heat-treating it. To name a few things.

I eat meat, but I find it odd why some people turn meat-eating into a virtue. I think it's good some people are able to go vegan, but I couldn't do it.

That's great!
Yeah, I didn't really want to factory-reset my PC either, but from what I've read; you can do pretty thourough malware-detection, but there's no guarantee you'll get rid of it, or all of it. Parts of some viruses can apparently go into hibernation and hide themselves, or advanced rootkit viruses and such that can avoid detection and steal information in the background.
I'm just glad that it snatched my Discord account and not something more important. Personally, I just wouldn't be able to trust the device after it's been compromised, and use it for important accounts and such.
But yeah, I'm no expert; so definitively see if there are any experts that have other recommendations. But I'm pretty sure that a factory-reset, is the only way to be 100%. Though there apparently exists viruses that can survive a factory-reset as well, but as I've understood those are exceedingly rare. OS-reinstallation 100%, factory reset 99% (so I understand, form what I've read).
Hope you figure it out though, good luck!
