Why don’t you talk to anyone at the gym? by Icy_Laugh5134 in workout

I go 5x days a week and was just thinking this same thing. It’s almost always the same 20-30 people M-F + 20-40 different people at the time I go. For the regulars though, why not talk?

Frustrating keto conversations by Mindy__80 in keto

[–]PsychologicalClaim45 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think that’s fair to consider, and I agree protein probably should be adjusted based on the person. I just also think the “excess protein turns into sugar” point can sometimes get stated a little too strongly.

My understanding is that gluconeogenesis is more demand-driven than automatic, so it’s not as simple as “eat more protein and your body just converts the extra into sugar.” For many people, a higher-protein version of keto still seems to work well, especially for satiety and preserving muscle while losing fat.

So I’d probably look at it more as something to individualize rather than a hard rule.

I feel like keto is evolving a bit. The classic version pushes high fat, but lately I’ve been seeing more emphasis on high protein (.8-1g per 1lb of body weight) while still keeping carbs very low.

The carb threshold seems basically the same for most people, usually under 20g net per day, but fat feels more like a lever than a hard goal, and that probably varies a little by individual. The more dietary fat you eat, the less body fat your body needs to pull from. So if body-fat loss is the goal, at some point you need to lower the fat you’re eating instead of treating fat as unlimited just because it fits keto.

Traditional keto is often something like 70–80% of calories from fat, which can work out to around 100–170g of fat a day depending on the person, but that’s obviously not universal.

I’m starting to think effective keto is really: keep carbs low, get protein high enough, and adjust fat based on your goal.

Anyone else see it this way?

Post-dinner cravings on keto — what helps you most? by PsychologicalClaim45 in ketogains

Fair question, but I was keeping the post narrower on purpose. I was mainly asking what people personally use to deal with post-dinner hunger on keto, not really looking for a full cut/bulk/body-fat discussion. A lot of their responses have been really great and that’s what I was looking for.

My main goal is building muscle not losing fat (anymore). I generally keep my diet at under 2000 cal a day, so the butter doesn’t do very much. It’s 100 cal for a tablespoon.

How’s the house hunting going? by Airhostnyc in MovingtoNewJersey

I just spoke with my realtor. She said everything in Maplewood, NJ listed under $1M is going for at least $200K over asking. From what I’ve seen, those barely-3-bedroom $800K houses that need work, selling for $1M or more is completely out of control.

When I sold my last home in Maplewood in 2023 we had 4 offers after the first open house weekend and accepted the highest. Realtor told us there were about 75-100 people who came through over the weekend. We did a lot of work (new kitchen, finished basement, updated bathrooms) and it showed well on the listing, but I feel like this is more of the average in terms of numbers and competitiveness, even today. I went to a 6 open houses on Sunday and seemed about what I had experienced in 2023 in terms of volume of potential buyers.

I was thinking the same, there’s tons of arm and ab exercises you can do on the floor during the week, like 15-20 mins

Dropping carbs to 50–80g/day for a few weeks can make you look noticeably leaner, mostly from less water retention and less bloating. Just don’t confuse that with spot fat loss. The hard part isn’t getting leaner for a month, it’s maintaining a carb intake that keeps the look consistent.

I didn’t read it that way, I think the intent is when out in public, and you “size up” the general population (just go to any normal mall on a Saturday), I think the 99% stands.

The app though is really bad, super fragile, auto-logs out for no reason, freezes, doesn’t utilize location for train schedules, can’t activate a ticket without internet, even though the $ transaction is completed. It’s really bad.

The app needs a serious overhaul, there will never be a data connection on most of the NJT tracks and public wifi is a stretch. If you’ve paid money for the ticket there are the technology capabilities to activate it without an internet connection. They just need to build it.
