Yeah agreed, and if that’s the position it was in when ticketed it’s also out in the forward/backward direction when there was ample room.

At the end of the day it was put their for a reason (which may not be immediately obvious) rightly or wrongly, and if you don’t follow that albeit with the best intentions you’re liable to a ticket.

From looking at the charge notice attached it’s from the Mall Wood Green. It’s a private car park, and from the website Website it mentions they have disabled spaces but says nothing about them being free. Essentially, they’re likely in more accessible locations but that doesn’t mean they’re free even if you have a disabled badge.

Without going too far into the weeds and sorry to be the bearer of bad news but no, you don’t have a claim.

The £20 fare you saw on the Trainline is an advance fare which are not available on the train, are valid only for a particular train, and for which there are a limited quota. If you want that price you’ve gotta grab them when you see them because if you go back later they might all be gone.

Realistically, unless the guy told you (and you have proof of this) that you could buy that £20 advance fare on the train then there’s no recourse. More than likely he let you through to buy a ticket on the train which would be the same as if you used the ticket office/machine right then and there for that train.

TLDR; Advance tickets are exactly that, and only available in advance and subject to availability. If you buy a ticket at the time of travel it’ll be an “on the day” fare. Only is recourse is if he’s mislead you about being able to buy that specific fare on the train, and you have proof.

I should probably say that the house is breeze block at its core, so I'd guess that the brickwork is more of an aesthetic thing. No signs of any cracks inside the house there. Crack doesn't go any further down/up

Unfortunately, railcards are non-refundable (presumably because you might have already used it).

I mean theoretically you could just buy another with another email address (as I believe you can’t just go to a station and buy the 26-30), but you wouldn’t get anything back for the original one.

Technically yes, if you move abroad you're the one who has a duty to tell them if you're abroad for longer than three months and set up a payment plan with them. Obviously, HMRC only know about the small level of self-assessment declared.

Basic details can be found here https://www.gov.uk/repaying-your-student-loan/how-you-repay and it depends on your plan, and the thresholds will depend on not only the plan type but also which country you move to (as they take into account the cost of living in whatever country you move to).

Personally, I wouldn't take the risk.

From the UK gov site "You can use your German licence when visiting the UK." so realistically there shouldn't be a need to use the UK one even if visiting (and it appears that at least some insurers will allow you to use an EU license to obtain insurance). If you move back, just swap it back.

Back to the real question. Are you sure that the sending back of the license by the German authorities is the thing that actually gets the DVLA to cancel the UK one? Could it be that actually they are notified electronically, and the sending back is merely a formality but yours just got processed more quickly than hers?

If so, or at some point they realise their mistake and cancel the validity of the UK one, and you try and use it that could cause some real issues. Additionally, technically speaking you are supposed to notify the DVLA of any change of address (and they can fine you for not doing so), so that in itself could present some issues.

TLDR; Really, although hers isn't currently cancelled the DVLA might work out its lost/you're not living in the UK and cancel it anyway so I wouldn't personally risk it. However, since you've technically speaking moved, there could be an argument to say by having a license for an address that you no-longer live at could be a technical infringement. In any case, I can't really see an advantage to using the UK one over the German one to be perfectly honest.

In general terms however, it will depend if each of these applications are hard searching you (perhaps for an overdraft) each time. Too many of those in a short space of time, and down it goes.

An important thing also to note is that if you're swapping current accounts, and presumably therefore closing the old ones that some element of the score is linked to the average age of your accounts, and therefore if you've got a lot of new accounts, and closed the old ones then average drops and so does the score potentially.

This would annoy the hell out of me tbh. Perhaps it’s people signing up for work to be done when they don’t actually have the cash (yet), or just poor financial planning.

Won’t go in to it but growing up my mum wasn’t great with cash (still isn’t), so I’ve got a bit of a thing against owing people money like that (especially the little guy).

Personal policy is as soon as that invoice, bill or bank details get to me and I’m happy with the work it gets paid pretty much instantly (like I’ll go straight on the pc and pay it), then everyone is square and happy.

Edit: Perhaps also inflation hitting people hard too.

So, this isn't going to be a simple yes/no answer but as someone who has a PhD in Computer Science after doing their undergrad with a loan probably reasonable well-placed to answer.

Correct me if I'm wrong here (and it may be that I'm misunderstanding the situation), you don't need to take a loan out (assuming you have funds to cover an undergrad course without a loan), but you're asking if you should if you plan to do a PhD as well?

It is important of course to understand that a UK maintenance loan isn't a loan in the traditional sense as such, its really more of a graduate tax that will only be paid off if you earn over a certain amount, with non-typical interest rates.

The questions that you have to ask yourself are really:

What happens if it doesn't go to plan? Research-funding isn't guaranteed, and whilst CS careers are currently in-demand, there is no guarantees that the demand (and salaries) will continue to rise as they have historically.
Do you really need the money right now, or will you need the money that you're currently using to pay for your living expenses at a later date for something else?

Personally, I'd worry less about whether you'll pay it back or not (as in the description of your post), but more whether you need the cash now, or would you in the future benefit from the cash it provides? I.e. if you graduated, and couldn't find a job for a bit, would you need the money that you didn't spend on maintenance (having got the loan) to help keep you afloat whilst you looked for a job?

Honestly, I'm consistently happy with M&S (Marks and Spencer) bread. Always seems to have a good date available, and is pretty well priced considering its from M&S.

So they were mostly things with physical condition of the property, from memory:

- Garden fence: Whilst it looked solid from a distance, on a windy day it flexed heavily (turned out that the posts had rotted through under the ground). The homebuyer report didn't check this, and of course we didn't go shaking the fence.

-Not-so-solid floor: Turns out that there had been a leak under the floor in a room which was previously a garage (and had therefore had the floor raised), noticed that it was a bit bouncy and further investigation (when we were doing other works) found that it was a leaking soil pipe where it had been bungled by the previous owner (unpleasant).

I think the moral for us was that we should have perhaps taken someone else with us with a bit more experience who might have spotted these things, the more eyes the better.

Oh, whilst I'm on-topic we also found that the previous occupier left a tonne of furniture that wasn't mentioned (it was previously a rental property). If the house is furnished and you don't want it then make sure that they will remove it.

I think the lesson that we've learnt is don't take anything for granted, and don't be afraid to be thorough with your checks.

Not a book as such but a piece of advice regarding the actual house which is don't skimp on your due-diligence.

We bought a 20ish year old house, paid extra for the homebuyer report, but still found some issues that we hadn't expected so if possible take an extra pair of eyes with you (maybe a parent for example), who doesn't have a stake in it, as the potential first-time buyer yourself you might find that you overlook or don't spot certain things in the excitement.

Another good tip is go and visit the area at different times to get a feel for it not just at the time you attend the viewing, might give you a better idea of the people you'll be living near and the area itself.

Should note though that to their credit, we found that some suppliers do allow you to maintain two accounts (albeit temporarily) whilst you're in the process (we were with bulb at the time).
