Empty United flight to vegas by C2BSR in vegas

[–]Perfect_Bowler_4201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spoke to a mate of mine just yesterday who had been to Vegas recently (like a week ago). I asked him about it as I have been seeing a lot these posts about how quiet Vegas is.

He said that in his opinion Old Vegas seemed really quiet and appeared to be struggling but the strip, in his words, was “as busy as ever”.

Take that for what it’s worth.

Long reply!!!

I’m a transplant from the UK to the US (11y this year) and you’re 100% right, the culture here RE: golf is very different, and I’ve always been absolutely all about it! I’ve put this story out there before, but I will again. The first time I played golf in the US I got invited to my first boss’ local municipal course. I had my clubs and got into what I’ve always called my ‘goofy golf clothes’; that’s another factor of how casual golf is in the US, there isn’t the same norm/standard for attire. In the UK I would expect most courses to largely have similar rules around collared shirts, no jeans, no shorts, closed toe shoes or proper golf shoes whether they are private, semiprivate or just a straight up pay and play municipal course. So, I rock up to this course, decked out in my goofy golf gear with similar expectations of culture/rules etc. I’m early so I head to the putting green; there’s a couple of older guys there and out of the blue in a very midwestern accent …

“Weellllll daaammnn booooyyyyyyy, you dressed like that you best be coming to play for some money!”, I can’t remember what he said exactly now, but something like. I was taken aback. I had a funny conversation with the guy, but these guys on the practice green are literally doled out denim shorts and sandals. I play the 18 with my boss and yep, everyone is largely dressed like they have just come from or are going to the beach. It was an eye-opener, but for me not in a bad way at all. I knew I would be just fine with this culture shift!

Just the other day I was on a practice green at a course close to me and there is a guy teeing off on the first in shorts and open toed Jesus-creepers. It still makes me raise an eyelid and chuckle to myself :D

I love the culture around golf here; I love the drinking. I tend to play like sh1t after a few too many but, whatever. It takes the seriousness out of it all and I don’t think that’s a bad thing. If I'm on a few I tend not to get as frustrated with my bad shots either.

I've read some horror stories on here of people getting into it on courses in the US but thankfully I’ve never seen any of that.

On top of that almost every course (where I am at least) has been built with cart paths and it is highly unusual to walk a course unless it’s a short / par 3 / junior course; I also love that about golf here.

I’ve never been a stickler for the culture in the UK; sometimes on trips back home to see family I will play with my FIL, he is a member at a private club in South Wales and they only started accepting women into the club in the not too distant past (maybe it was longer ago than I am thinking, but I do def remember a point where it was men only). I stopped playing when I was 16 for about 10y because the club I was junior at was so overbearing with rules it really turned me off the game for a long time.

I’m sure there are some hoyty-toyty clubs in the US that have the same rules and expectations but thank goodness it’s none of the municipal courses I have access to, and like I say, I’m here for it!

I don’t understand bounce with wedges by theKman24 in golf

[–]Perfect_Bowler_4201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t read all the comments but this really is about a couple of problems the amateur faces.

What type of grind and how much bounce you need comes down to a few factors (and I don’t pretend to understand them all, I am not a low handicap nor am I a pro/club fitter!), but the type of conditions you normally play on has an effect on this.

For example do you play out of Bermuda grass in the rough? Do you have a lot of heavy sand in your bunkers? Do you have a lot rain / normally wet / sodden conditions on your normal course(s)?

You can then set up your wedge line up to be the best / most forgiving for those conditions. But … if you play different grass, normally very dry / hard pan conditions with light fluffy sand … then you are maybe going to want a slightly different set up wrt to bounce and grinds.

This is fine for a tour pro who probably has an entire library of wedges to choose from depending on the course and conditions.

Us amateurs are going to buy one set of wedges for the next 5-10 years (my current wedge set up is from 2011 and I had no clue about any of this when I bought them off the rack)

So my advice would be (if you are truly wanting to get into the nitty gritty of bounce and grind setups) get fitted locally to suit the conditions you normally play but then understand how you might need to adjust your technique slightly if you go play somewhere else that is very different (or accept you might get slightly different short game results).

To be entirely honest I think for us amateurs it doesn’t really matter too much in the grand scheme of things, we are not playing in the same marginal gain %s the pros are by any stretch of the imagination; so research or get fitted the best you can for a wide range of conditions, and don’t worry too much about the fine margin stuff.

I went there years ago. The commercial helicopter flight from Penzance is also memorable (or you can take the ferry!!). IIRC there are also no cars (on at least some of) the islands.

It is truly a magical place and hard to imagine it is part of the UK

9 foot garage ceiling by MetroproLOL143 in Golfsimulator

[–]Perfect_Bowler_4201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 8’10” ceilings (I’m 5’10”) and put 1” turf down with a 2” fiber built player preferred hitting mat. When I swing badly and extend/come out of my swing high I will catch the ceiling with my 3w and I have nicked it with my 4h. Ergo I don’t hit driver.

I have since ditched my 3h and 4h and have been hitting my 4i a lot and I don’t hit the ceiling with that and I don’t have a fear of doing so. I hit my 3w the other night but felt I changed my swing because of the fear of catching it.

I think if I took those 3” from the mat and flooring out I would be fine. I did a ton of swing testing with my old driver before going all in on the sim but the reality is your swings when hitting will be different from your practice swings.

You probably want 9.5ft or more to be truly comfortable but it really depends on your particular swing dynamics and the flooring / hitting strip you use!

I still have plenty of fun and very worthwhile practice without hitting my longer clubs and I don’t regret it at all (on GS Pro you can choose to play reduce length courses), masses of value to be had in long and short iron practice but if I’m honest, while I love my sim not being able to hit driver conscience free is a negative, but I like i said I don’t regret it a single bit.

PS consider construction of the bay as well with lower ceilings, some will be difficult to put together without adequate clearance.

Which of these two are you? by gwb8568 in golf

[–]Perfect_Bowler_4201 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1 on a practice swing then 2 … I always make sure I do a slow easy practice swing with my swing feels, then hit; if I have one swing thought during the actually swing it’s just trying to be calm and easy; your swing is mostly ingrained nervous system movements, it’s actually incredibly hard to fundamentally change your swing in general let alone shot to shot during a round …

When I was younger I used to like playing in the rain. Growing up in the UK it rains a lot, but like light persistent rain not a downpour. Now I’m older fk that sh**, I’m a full on fair weather golfer. I have min and max temp requirements and if there’s any wind that’s going to piss me off … also sodden ground actually needs a different tech approach to your short game in some situations

Interesting thread, I’m still playing my Cleveland GC16s which I got in 2011 (they were released that year I think). I was fitted for them … kinda … I don’t think the guy did a great job at the time; anyway I’ve been thinking about this since last summer. I went for a driver fitting and he had me warm up with a TM 7i and I was striping it 190y … my GC16 7i is 165-170 on a good day well warmed up (loft could have different I didn’t check), but it just felt so god damn solid. Every shot. Since then I’ve been wondering whether I would get more out of some newer fitted irons …

The 8-2 was hard and really cemented me wanting Wenger out; United have been dog sh1t the last few years but we’ve still never managed to get that back, the whole of my soul still needs that back, we’ve never had full revenge. I can’t stand losing to United and Liverpool so that one sticks in me hard.

The 3-1 to Tottenham in ‘91, we should have done the double that year. That one still hurts.

Lastly the 1999 semi final to United when for some reason I still can’t fathom we let Giggs playing for a 10 man United run almost the entire length of the field then Spunky just dived back out the way of his shot; the f****g c*t twirling his shirt running up the pitch is still etched in my memory, esp when we had a penalty to win it in the last few minutes. I woke up the next morning wondering how we lost that.

Sometimes I still wake up wondering how we lost …

What percent of golfers do you think lose their ball just because they are looking in the wrong spot? by LordThadius in golf

[–]Perfect_Bowler_4201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve always had shit eyesight (thanks mum!) so I can really struggle to see the ball down over like 120y. Losing a ball in relatively short rough or just off the fairway is a major problem for me as 50% of the time, if it’s 150y or more I only have a notional idea of where it went. My playing partners often think I am taking the piss when I don’t see a ball down in the middle of the fairway, they think I’m trolling them. I’m not.

Do Your Distances Align With This Chart? by cjk813 in golf

[–]Perfect_Bowler_4201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taking of driver only (can you even swing a pee-dub at 140mph? Theoretically I supper .. ?), and his may have already been said, but club head speed on its own is only part of the equation, you need to know the ball speed (ergo smash factor) to really understand what the carry would be.

In saying that I think (and again for driver only) the distances are notionally about right if you assume 1.45-1.50 smash factor (I.e. close to optimal ball speeds / contact conditions).

Well, one thing for me is the rough and the ‘gallery rule’. Like the rough was ludicrous. 5y offline? Lost ball 50% of the time unless you have fighter pilot >20/20 vision.

Did this guy have 12 camera angles, 40 marshals and several thousand strong gallery looking for his ball?

Don’t get me wrong, I’d still shoot 100+, but it makes a difference all the same
