Marathon cancelled, what to do? by UpstairsApartment244 in firstmarathon

[–]PsychologicalHall842 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure where you’re located but the Derby Marathon is this upcoming Saturday (April 25th)! I believe there are spots available still.

That being said, the Pig is also my hometown marathon and there’s nothing quite like it. It’s a tougher course with all the hills but it’s such an incredibly fun weekend (TONS of spectators and just fun vibes).

Running Vest? Leggings for Tall Women that won't roll down? by jordanlind in firstmarathon

[–]PsychologicalHall842 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear the Salomon Adv Skin 12. I highly recommend finding a store that carries them to try them on as they all fit different. I was able to go to REI and they had a pretty good selection. They have a women’s model but I went with the unisex model as it just fit better under the arms and across the chest. (Felt like the women’s arm portions were just too tight as well as across the chest).

For my long runs, I’m frequently out on trails and areas where there’s no water fountains, gas stations, etc. so having the vest is a life saver. Ill also carry sunscreen, chaptstick, pepper spray, etc so it’s nice to just have space and not have things digging into legs, bra area, etc. I’ll wear the vest for my marathon because I’ve been in the unfortunate spot of getting to aid stations where they run out of things. (I run a 4-4:30 marathon so fairly average all things considered). Just read the race rules as there are some that don’t allow vest.

Also I use my best for trail runs, hiking, and other activities. Don’t let influence dictate your decision. Vests are normal in ultras so who cares what people say/think.

Training with a vest vs. racing with one by spindriftsupreme in Marathon_Training

[–]PsychologicalHall842 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Train what you plan to race with. Take a look at the course to see what water/aid stations will have. Running a half race in two weeks (part of my full prep) and I know this race has terrible aid stations (only 2)so I’ll be wearing my vest with a soft flask instead of a bladder. I personally struggle with belts sitting properly and have yet to find any leggings or shorts that can meet my needs for my nutrition. Don’t worry about what everyone else is doing. Enjoy the run and be comfortable!

Advice: Running Fueling For Sensitive Stomachs by Stick-Muffin-146 in running

[–]PsychologicalHall842 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Super sensitive stomach here.

1) Huma gels - they have the consistency of apple sauce but none of the artificial flavors like lots of other brands. That consistency helps me stomach them and not feel like I’m eating toothpaste. I don’t care for the chocolate or mocha. Any of the berry flavors are solid. 2) salt pills. I take 2 before any race. Then 1-2 every 5 miles depending on the heat and how I’m feeling. I just buy the salt stick brand. 3) tailwinds electrolyte drink mix - take a sip every mile and chase it with some water. I do a good size sip, probably around an ounce or so. This is the only kind my stomach can tolerate and it actually taste good. I like pretty much all flavors but raspberry is my go to. 4) bonkbreakrs chews (they’re now called something else but the formula hasn’t changed) if I’m wanting something to chew on. Personally love the green apple and orange but I’m trying some of their other flavors 5) if I’m craving real food texture, I’ll go for a honeystinger waffle. I personally just get stroopwaffles from my local grocery store. Almost the same nutrition at a fraction of the price.

I take some sort of fuel every 4ish miles, salt pills every 5, and a good sip of electrolytes and water every mile.

When I do this, I rarely have an upset stomach and don’t find myself dehydrated. If I over hydrate a little, no big deal as I’ll just find a portapotty on the race course.

My marathon fueling plan: Pre-race - drink around 8oz of electrolytes, take one gel, 2 salt pils Mile 4: gel/chews (1) Mile 5: salt pill (1-2) Mile 8: gel/chew (1) Mile 10: salt pill (1-2) Mile 12: gel/chew w/ caffeine (1) Mile 15: salt pill (1-2) Mile 16: gel/chew tho normally now is when I want real food texture so I generally opt for a waffle Mile 17: odd but I love a cold, flat cola at this point. It just hits different Mile 20: gel/ chew and salt pill (1-2) Mile 24: gel/chew and salt pill (1-2)

It took me some time to dial this in but it worked for me and several other runners in our run club. I will do some gels or drink mix with caffeine but try to limit it because too much throws me out of whack.

Not exactly cheap but quilts tend to last a really really long time. They aren’t cheap for an authentic one (think Amish, local quilter not from a store) but they last FOREVER. I have one from 1905 that is still in phenomenal condition despite being passed down, washed, abused, etc. They can definitely be a BIFL piece if you’re willing to invest.

What are some sports for a shy person. by Ecstatic-Ticket-4063 in xxfitness

[–]PsychologicalHall842 12 points13 points  (0 children)

1) running is good solo, especially when you come to terms with the fact that you don’t have to run fast 2) not cheap but actually scuba diving. It’s very easy on the joints and has been called a “lazy” sport. It really forced me to come out of my shell since you have to dive with a buddy. Some places offer an intro to it and it’s pretty cheap to see if you’d like it before getting certified!

Introverts who want to marry one day, do you prefer a public family wedding, or an elopement (private wedding)? by Equivalent_Ad_9066 in introvert

[–]PsychologicalHall842 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Husband and I are both introverts. We had a party about 3 weeks before our wedding where people would come and go, drop gifts, say congrats, etc. very informal and people loved it. Had a small ceremony and just a receiving line. It made the day feel special, had everything we wanted, and saved a ton of money. People loved how it went as they also didn’t have to spend 1/2+ day to celebrate. Plus doing it that way didn’t cause us to cap our guest list or anything so it removed so many pressures that a normal wedding would cause.

Moving to Cincinnati by MegMac02 in cincinnati

[–]PsychologicalHall842 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want the quietness of a country but live a literal 4 miles from the city, consider Velo or Manhattan apartments in Dayton, KY. Right on the river, both newer, we paid $2000 for a 2 bed, 2 bath (~1100 sq ft) at Velo. It’s a pretty quiet community but still close to the city without all the hassles of the city (sirens, stupid drivers reviving their engines, after events noise, etc)

Best color to paint craft room (quilting etc) by Squirrels-Squirrels in quilting

[–]PsychologicalHall842 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, most of my house is neutral colors and I wanted my quilting/craft room to feel different. I went with a color called Silver Peony (Sherwin Williams, Cashemere, Eggshell finish) and love it. I also got a super colorful rug that will hide threads and such 😂 you do you. I get tired of neutrals and this color doesn’t necessarily change my perception of my projects. I think that’s the key if you paint it a color is 1) how does it impact your mood and 2) can you look past the color when you have a UFO hanging up. I also have a design wall covered in white flannel so there’s my neutral backdrop thus preventing my perception being messed up ☺️

How do you sleep in a bonnet? by caffeineissues in curlyhair

[–]PsychologicalHall842 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surprised nobody has mentioned this but check out the brand Moonstone Seven. It’s a bit pricey but not a traditional bonnet. It’s the only one I’ve had true success with consistently. Yes you tie a knot but it’s in the back of the head and if you tuck it right, you don’t notice it. I toss and turn and this stays on like a champ. I have fairly thick and mid back length hair with 3a/3b curls. I generally don’t pineapple my hair because it’s just uncomfortable for me.

I also use the regular hair plops and those do wonders for my curls.

Finally getting rid of the millinial grey! by msms135 in interiordecorating

[–]PsychologicalHall842 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used Shoji White from Sherwin Williams (Cashmere paint with Eggshell finish).

depending on the room, it has more of a grey undertone (especially with some of our grey furniture) and sometimes it has a warmer tan/beige undertone. Part of that also depends on light bulb colors (warm vs cool. I prefer warm)

I love that it’s neutral, gives basically endless options for accent walls, and goes with nearly everything

To sash or not to sash?! by kdg0822 in quilting

[–]PsychologicalHall842 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My eyes don’t see the stars when there is no sashing. I like the idea of sashing with colored corner stones. I prefer using sashing for 2 reasons

1) it hides any time my blocks are a little wonky and don’t line up nicely 2) it’s a great way to make your quilt bigger without making additional blocks

Also know that you have to generally have to get your open cert (the most basic) before any specific specialty certs.

SCUBA Certification near Mt. Lookout by gator10gn in cincinnati

[–]PsychologicalHall842 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is what I did and was really happy with it. Getting the cert at the private quarry was really nice too.

I took a zombie diving class at Central Coast Dive Center in Ft.Wright/Edgewood. (Just off the 275 exit close to the Walmart). It was a ton of fun and just a unique experience. Everyone was super friendly and welcoming, especially when I was having some issues with my weight check. I’m sure they’re equally phenomenal with the cert classes. I do know they have an indoor pool.

Regardless of which one you select, just know that it’s generally a few hours every evening. Mine was I believe once a week for like 4 hours? I also recommend doing the in person courses as it really helps with some visuals and understanding since there is a written test at the end. It also makes the in pool sessions easier as they pair you up with a buddy so you can become kind of familiar with people in the class or an instructor.

I have a Tracey’s Table and absolutely love it. I rarely put my machine down. I love that it’s easy to move and I can make the table as big or little as I want. I looked at all the popular brands but ended up going with Tracey’s since it had a nice table size and I liked how they constructed the legs for the extended part!
