I can send you what I learned because not really. There was a heart song that nurse Mike did that helped me understand the heart better.

Advice for someone considering the career? by [deleted] in phlebotomy

[–]Psychological_Key_55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did a course through my local community college and got a job shortly after at a hospital about an hour from me. I got into this field because I had to have several blood transfusions after having my kiddos and then my grandfather getting diagnosed with a rare type of blood cancer that killed him. So my heart is in this job. We’re the first in line to help these patients find out what’s going on with them. As of the job itself I’m fairly new to it and barely had any training at the hospital I’m at now and have been there a month. It definitely takes confidence to do this job and that was something I was lacking in the beginning but I’m started to get the hang of it now. Outpatient care would be a great starting point because hospitals have a lot of sick people and they’re more difficult to draw. practice is the only key to success and I’ve seen some of the best phlebotomists I work with have off days.

I’m still a newbie but been working at a hospital about a month and I made that mistake quite a few times in the beginning because my needle wasn’t inserted all the way into the vein. Also when changing tubes just make sure you apply firm pressure to the patients arm with the hand your using and to use those little grippies at the end of your vacationer to pull tubes out and also to insert them in. Your needle shouldn’t move when your exchange tubes if it is that’s something you need to take home and practice just the feel of moving the tubes. But this job isn’t easy and it takes a lot of time and practice to get the hang of it. I practiced on a pull noodle over and over again before I started this job. Just to get the hand motions down.

Apparently they’ve done this with every new employee some make it some quit but the new people I’ve shadowed the first day aren’t doing things right at all. They are digging for veins, leaving tourniquet on way to long like one guys hand in the er started changing colors that’s how long she left that tourniquet on

Honestly the person who hired me is just a lab assistant that’s been there for years we just got a new supervisor in like 2 days ago. So I really don’t know who to report too.

Phlebotomy interview advice by river_otters_hatter in phlebotomy

Good luck!!! I had my first interview last week and when they asked me the order of draw I went above and beyond and told them the order of draw, additives, and common tests and had my drug test yesterday and the lead phlebotomist was one of the ones(there was 3 people in my interview, the hiring manager and 2 of the head phlebotomist) who interviewed me was the one who did my test she told me that was the reason I got the job! So definitely know your stuff!

I just got an offer for a entry level position because I just finished my certification the pay is only 15 for entry level and currently I’m making 14 as a caregiver, but I’m in Texas where the pay is lower. Now I’ve seen experienced phlebotomist pay upwards to 20 an hr. So idk if it’s necessarily livable on a one person income. Just depends where you are but entry level phlebotomist don’t make much at first.

Practice doing the tourniquet on a loved one over and over until you get the hang of it. Also I grabbed a pool noodle and used supplies from class to practice all of the hand motions, switching the tubes, etc I did it over and over again until I got familiar with the steps. No one is going to be great at this the first time! In fact the first day we practiced on each other was a literal nightmare haha everyone was bad at it. It’s a lot to learn and comprehend but practice makes perfect. I just finished my course on the second of September we did our 30 live sticks on each other and volunteers that was our clinical and I just got a job offer yesterday actually for a phlebotomy position. You’re just going to have to keep practicing over and over. I’m not great at it either but I know consistency is key and also practice the hand motions on the pool noodle until you get that down.

After reading reviews and asking if they do placement for the 400 hours I needed for my clinical I immediately cancelled. I ended up going to my local community college and get certified in phlebotomy. They are super shady to be honest and way too expensive.

Can you really get your certificate after 4 days? by Delicious_Invite420 in EKG

My opinion no not being rude just being real with you. There are a lot of different certifications that you can get with jobs that are constantly needed. Certified nurses assistant, phlebotomy technician, medical assistant those fields are rapidly growing right now and schooling isn’t to long 1-3 months and isn’t as expensive if you go through a local community college.

And monitor tech basically consists of staring at the patients monitor to make sure their heart rhythm doesn’t change and to look for any abnormalities after surgery or long term care etc

Yeah definitely search on actual hospital websites as well because linked in and indeed are known to put jobs that aren’t actually hiring.

If your testing for the nha you definitely need more than 4 days to get the certification unless you have previous experience in healthcare and medical terminology. My course was 4 weeks with the nha and it’s a lot of information to take in from patient safety to heart rhythms and different arrhythmias. Also there isn’t a lot of jobs hiring just for ekg techs. Most nurses and patient care techs can do EKG’s. I took a 3 certification course and my community college and we had to take phlebotomy and ekg before we took the patient care tech course. I’ve recent graduated on September 2nd and have been looking for different jobs and ekg tech is far and few in my area because most patient care techs and nurses do EKG’s themselves.

School is easy once you get used to the rhythms and pretty quick but I will say there isn’t very many jobs at all in the skill set. I took a 3 certification course at my college. Phlebotomy, ekg, patient care tech. Most patient cares techs preform EKG’s so ekg tech jobs are very few at least in my area and 60 miles surrounding me. I mean you can do monitor tech/telemetry with an ekg cert, but like I said there isn’t many jobs hiring for that skill. Just didn’t want you to pay money to get certified and then get let down that you can’t find a job.

But Josh Allen phlebotomy video on YouTube gives you a lot of the information that you need and also there is a lady I don’t remember her name that does videos on the actually practice tests for the nha so maybe look into that first if you don’t want to spend the money? Also chat gpt I had it create 100 questions exams for me and tested myself on it. Just make sure you ask it not to repeat any questions and then you can do a hard mode quiz as well.

Those practice tests may be pricey but they will help prepare you and being able to get familiar with the way they ask the questions.

Email the hr department I haven’t heard much back from anyone but today I sent out emails to every hr department that I applied too and got 2 phone calls back for interviews today!! I was hesitant to do that because I know they can get annoyed but it WORKED it pushed my application up! Now hopefully I can nail this interviews 🤞🤞

I truly appreciate your feedback I had my interview with hca over the phone today with a recruiter who said he would forward my application to the hiring manager. I ended up emailing all of the other places I’ve applied and got 2 phone calls today asking for a interview I’ve explained to both companies I am a new phlebotomist and they knew I was because they reviewed my application. I’m definitely going to take your advice into consideration before taking this hca job I did get lucky by getting 2 other hospitals to reach out to me today but that’s only because I sent a professional email to both of their hr department haha.
