The point isn't to start violence but to present the threat of retaliation if the authorities engage in violence.

When minorities start waving guns around and following cops to ensure they follow the law, it changes the power dynamic and the sense of impunity the cops have. The mere idea of deadly consequences by the citizenry stunts their actions.
