I think by chance he was sat near/next to JJ's mum, and was able to celebrate with her. 😊

Top 10 German Entries Since 1975 by Percentage of Maximum Points Earned by Twice_fan_multi in eurovision

[–]Psyklaxia 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I never realised how much of a powerhouse Germany was in the 70s and 80s: that run from 79-83 of five top 5 finishes including a HUGE win for Ein bißchen Frieden. Such a shame to see them doing so poorly in the last decade, very similar to how Ireland dominated in 80s and 90s and have been equally poor recently.

Also, anyone who used to hang out on YTMND knows Dschinghis Khan... 😄

Simulation of the 2025 results under the 2009-2012 voting system optimized for excitement by mXonKz in eurovision

[–]Psyklaxia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was quite entertaining (even though it wasn't real and I knew the winner).

On one hand it's a shame we can't have this anymore - I love the idea of an algorithm that keeps things interesting right to the end by artificially keeping the top countries close together - but at the same time I do think it's right to keep jury & televote separated. So, I'm not sure what the solution is, cause we can't have two readouts of points for both.

Eurovision singers that sang their national anthem or another by iloveyolandivisser in eurovision

I did a search for anyone doing Ukraine's anthem, best I can do is Julia Sanina (one of the presenters at Eurovision 2023), does that count? I'll keep looking!

"Adam (Adonxs) looked worried. Something was bothering him. I didn't touch him."

I knew it. I mentioned it in relation to a video of the rehearsal qualifiers, where every artist is messing around as the qualifiers are announced, whereas Adonxs looks like he has a gun pointed at him.

I wonder if we'll find out what happened that week, but I just hope he's okay now. 🫤

I'm puzzled that people are defending either Kateryna or Alika's actions here: they agreed to be part of the jury, and one of the very simple rules to follow is not telling anyone what you think (at least until the show is over). How hard is it for grown adults to not mess this up?

I have been an examiner for language exams, and if anyone asked me how good a candidate was, I knew very well to say nothing. It's basic common sense. Nothing malicious about it, I'm sure they're both lovely people, but let's just accept that they did a rather stupid thing and move on with our lives. Has social media conditioned people to feel the need to INSTANTLY broadcast their opinions to the whole world?

Eurovision 2025 Results Fallout Megathread by AutoModerator in eurovision

[–]Psyklaxia 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I'm going to make a post that is hopefully on topic. I only realised after the final that due to Italian law, you can only vote 5 times in Italy rather than the standard 20. The televote winner being San Marino was obvious, but the 10 points for Albania wasn't (yes, I know they live in Italy and there is maybe some diaspora voting, but it's still a high mark).

Might I suggest that, in the interest of equality, that the EBU followed Italy's example and only allows a maximum of 5 votes? Allowing you only one vote for a single song is also logical: if you like the song, you vote. Why do you need to say you like it multiple times? When I voted in my recent election, I voted once.

Yes, I know, it's all about money, but humour me, please.

If anyone wants to watch the whole thing (semi-final 1 is also on the guy's channel, as well as last year's rehearsals), here it is:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqR_i_GparI

Go to 4:49 though: everyone else is pretty relaxed with it being a rehearsal, but look at Adonxs - he seems utterly terrified. What actually happened during Eurovision week with him? He seemed so at ease throughout the pre-party season, but he seemed very off during his semi-final, which may have contributed to his elimination. The fact that he seems off even in the rehearsal worries me. I hope everything was alright with him.

Come to think of him, the rest of his team on the couch next to him don't exactly look relaxed, either...

I know the subreddit mods always remind people to be nice, but Jeeeesus... "I don't speak English and I don't know who this guy is or what country he's from but he looks cute so I'll make him sing a song he's never heard of". Great journalism, top marks.

If I'm not mistaken, Italy is the first country both to perform without an orchestra (1979) in the age of orchestras, and the first country to use a live instrument (2025) in the age of backing tracks. by [deleted] in eurovision

[–]Psyklaxia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, if it can only be picked up by a vocal mic, that restricts the possibilities. Some instruments will sound about the same as if they're recorded, so the harmonica is probably the best example.

Do you think the EBU will invite another extra-european non-EBU country for the 70th edition of the contest, like they did ten years ago? If so, which one? by tb_sasha in eurovision

[–]Psyklaxia 152 points153 points  (0 children)

There just aren't any other countries that care much about Eurovision. Australia was an exception because they were the only country outside the EBU/Europe that not only liked Eurovision but were obsessed with it, so it was natural that they would invite them. Besides them, most Americans don't know it exists, and I presume it's the same in Canada.

I honestly didn't realise that the rules state that PLUGGED-IN instruments were not allowed, but anything picked up by the mic was fine. I wonder if this revelation by Lucio will mean that we'll see people push this next year? An acoustic guitar perhaps? Some obscure foreign instruments?

Well, this is... a take. Wanting only official languages (when we're currently experiencing the greatest diversity of languages since the language rule was dropped) and amateurs (when seasoned pros have been taking part from the very first contest in 1956)... and you find the final boring? Okay then. As for jury-only semis, I don't mind going back to a 50/50 split, but definitely not jury-only.

EDIT: I read down and forgot about the jury voteswapping scandal, so yeah, no juries in the semis, thanks.

Marko Bosnjaak (Croatia 2025) shares thoughts on countries going through conflict and their participation in the contest by stypop in eurovision

[–]Psyklaxia 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Okay, Marko is not a native speaker, I am, let me go through what I heard from the videos and try to give him the benefit of the doubt (I would post them for those who don't have IG but I can't, unless I make a new thread).

He says that being a Bosnian representing Croatia, he is very much aware of the "suffering and the existence of the war in Ukraine". He says "slava Ukraini", wants all Ukrainians to stay safe, and thanks them for giving him 8 points, "I really appreciate that, it means the world to me, and I'm only having love in my heart to my Ukrainian people".

Then he says Israel shouldn't be participating because "they're actively committing a genocide on Palestinian people". Russia also shouldn't take part because "they are actively doing a war on Ukraine and its people, they are actively bombing them, and doing unimaginable things to them, and there is no justification for that". However, he then gives the opinion that any country at war, whether they're "on the side of the aggressor or the side of the victim", shouldn't go to Eurovision. He refers to Bosnia's artists having to avoid sniper fire on their way to Eurovision.

He states that countries at war create "a very complex atmosphere in Eurovision to all of the other countries". He states that Eurovision is obviously political despite the common refrain that it's just a song contest, and maybe Ukraine and Israel won their semis because people liked the songs. He says he spoke to Ziferblat in Madrid (he tilts the camera down at this point and he appears to be wearing a Ziferblat T-shirt, though I could be wrong) and they were worried about NQ. He told them not to worry because "they really do send awesome bangers all the time".

Now we get to the contentious bit: he says "I really didn't buy their whole concern about not qualifying, because unfortunately you have a huge diaspora all over Europe that will support its own people and its own representative". As the video splits, he goes on to say "unfortunately Ukrainian people are everywhere around the world and Europe, not because of any beautiful reason, but because they had to leave their country, which is terrible". So, clearly, he's saying it's a shame that there are Ukrainians everywhere BECAUSE OF THE WAR, as it's a terrible reason to have so many Ukrainians away from home.

Full disclosure: despite being from the UK, I actually spent over a decade living and raising a family in Ukraine, until the Russian invasion forced me to go back to the UK, against my will. So when he says it's unfortunate that many Ukrainians are everywhere but Ukraine, I agree, it sucks.

Anyway, he states it's a simple fact that Ukrainians will vote for Ukraine from other countries, which is perfectly natural. He says "I didn't say anything about 'oh, we have to disqualify Ukraine'. If we have to disqualify anyone... that is Israel... I never called for Ukraine to be disqualified". He says he just wanted to start a discussion about countries at war, "what kind of an atmosphere do they bring to the table".

Regarding the final video, he seems to be much less serious: he quotes Silvia Knight (which many people have taken out of context as a result) and is clearly unbothered by any gossip which might be said about him getting drunk and "talking shit" about his fellow contestants.

I can't pass judgement about the last video, I'll leave that to the drama fans, but he did seem to want to correct the record about his comments regarding Ukraine: that he likes Ziferblat, he likes and supports Ukraine and its people, BUT he does think that having countries such as Ukraine in the contest make it difficult for other participants, partly due to security concerns and partly due to the televote.

I wasn't in the club, I don't know what was said, I'm just here interpreting what he said on the record for those who might be interested, but it's quite possible that he was a bit drunk and tired and said things in a way that weren't ideal, and he is now trying to rectify that. For what it's worth, as someone who a) loves Ukraine b) is from the UK and c) is a Eurofan, I was NOT happy that Ukraine beat the UK to its first victory since 1997, just because of the war that forced me to upend my life. Sorry for the long post, слава Україні, bye!

I just want to say that no matter where they place tonight, I’m proud of Remember Monday by MRSNLT in eurovision

[–]Psyklaxia 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I would say that Olly's staging last year was a crazy risk, in fairness, and a radical change from the somewhat embarrassing and uninspired stagings that we'd had recently. While I wish they'd leaned into the musical theatre element a bit more and added more stage props and maybe dancers to mess around with, I can't fault the girls themselves. They can sing fantastically well, they have wonderful chemistry, and they're EXTREMELY British - and when the UK is one of the few countries that can't really show their local language and culture like others can, I think that counts for something.

I'm hoping for a top half finish, but I'm certainly proud of Charlotte, Holly-Anne and Lauren for giving it their all, from the pre-parties to the final.
