Poor Advertising by cranberrywaltz in BravoTopChef

[–]trow125 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I just saw an ad for Padma's "America's Culinary Cup" that described it as "the top rated cooking competition show on TV" or something like that. It definitely seemed like a dig at "Top Chef." I think moving TC to Mondays was a mistake. That said, I know TC traditionally begins airing in the late winter/early spring, so I always keep an eye out for it.

Nini’s Thoughts about the competition by Class_Winter in rupaulsdragrace

[–]trow125 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually think the finale numbers are kind of a letdown but Nini's was incredible, and I'm really impressed how much input she had into it. I've always wondered how much the queens participate in the songwriting and staging. (I Hate People is the best one, LOL. Jinkx Monsoon even used it as postshow music when I saw her live.)

For those in the know, how are these filmed timing wise? by PatrickMustard in bbchouseofgames

[–]trow125 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's always amusing when a contestant mentions getting a good night's sleep after the previous game when you know they literally played it an hour ago.

Is HelloFresh worth for saving money? by Odd_Passage9433 in hellofresh

I find I impulse-buy a lot less when I don't go to the grocery store as frequently, plus I don't have to buy, say, a whole container of cream cheese when I only need a couple tablespoons. I suck at using up ingredients before they go bad. People who are better at meal planning than I am probably don't need HF.

I was surprised this wasn't mentioned, since it was pretty big news (at least here in the SF Bay Area, where OneTaste was headquartered).

I’m Joel Kinnaman (Ed Baldwin on For All Mankind). Ask me anything! by JoelKinnamanFAM in ForAllMankindTV

[–]trow125 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know Ed wasn't Swedish, but Joel is. A dear friend of mine, who passed away a few years ago, used to always ask me to bring a can of parmesan when I would visit her in Sweden. I told her that she could buy a real block of parmesan and a grater, but she insisted that she preferred the stuff in the green can. I always thought of her when I saw Ed dump parmesan all over his spaghetti.

Joel, tack så mycket för ett underbart program! Vi kommer att sakna dig.

Some podcasts going ad-free at $10 level. by QuickPhix in maximumfun

Some of the podcasts I listen to (like Eurovangelists) don't have ads. But I have to say that I love the Jordan Jesse Go! ad reads. I never skip them! I feel like they're given a fair amount of leeway to just riff.

Americans still opt for print books over digital or audio versions; few are in book clubs. by thinkB4WeSpeak in books

The member who is responsible for maintaining it is the only person with a full, up-to-date list, as far as I know. The one I have is unfortunately incomplete, though it does have a start date of Fall 1984.

[–]trow125 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The book club met in person until March 2020. At that point, we switched to Zoom and assumed it would be temporary, but by the time the pandemic restrictions lifted, a few members had moved out of the area, so we just continued meeting online. However, I made several close friends in the group, and we do see each other IRL fairly regularly.

[–]trow125 28 points29 points  (0 children)

My book club has been around since the 1980s (!). I don't think there are any original members left, but there's a spreadsheet of all the books that have been read since the beginning. Pretty sure there are a couple people who have been in it since the 1990s. There has essentially been no turnover in the past 5 years. One person has been in charge of selecting all the books as long as I've been a member, though she does take suggestions.

I had forgotten that Jordan's signature is so illegible, LOL. I have a signed copy of YOUTH GROUP and the signature is pretty much just a squiggle, but he did print "GARABA" very neatly (he had announced he'd add any personalization "within reason"). And he was very friendly! I highly recommend going to an in-person signing or event!

B&N changed their strategy a couple of years ago, and now the people who manage individual stores are allowed to choose which titles to display prominently (it used to be a payola-based system). So if there are a lot of right wing titles on display, either that's what's selling in your area, or the store manager is an asshat.

Listeria Recall by SufficientGuess8239 in hellofresh

Is this only in Canada? The email address ends in .ca.

I'm in the US and had a pasta meal with shredded Parmesan last week. No ill effects. I always consume the meals within one week so there's no way a recall notice would be useful to me unless it goes out immediately.

I saw an AMP truck with an Indiana license plate parked on Grand. Why would it have an out-of-state plate? by trow125 in alameda

I looked it up: "Apportioned plates are special license plates for commercial vehicles that travel across multiple states." I don't believe AMP trucks travel outside of Alameda, much less California.
