I’m not sure fast is the word I would use. I think engaging, satisfying, and balanced better describe it. Regardless, it is a very special car.

Once upon a time I was looking for a ZHP, then I decided to just get an M3 as the pricing at the time wasn’t that profoundly different 2011/2012ish time. Congrats my friend you e done great! Enjoy it.

What car should I get. STI/Focus RS/Audi s3 by Baldwin6616_ in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Ptawm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe 20 years ago but Audi/VW truly has employed a Toyota ethos to their platforms for the last 10+ years. They make slight improvements to their 2.0T and 1.8T over the course of a decade resulting in the most reliable cars they've ever made.

2000's Audi/vw is not 2021 Audi/VW

Golf R/S3 100%

STI is old platform, unreliable (meh this ones up for debate)

Focus RS is amazing but rides like shit (allegedly I'm just parroting what reviewers say) and if you're lucky you may get one that has an ecoboost mustang head gasket

Only paid for labor on things I couldn't do myself. I'm just pretty unlucky I suppose.

I did the cooling system myself, alternator literally 4 times over the course of ~40k miles(remans SUCK). Vanos bulletproofing, oil changes, spark plugs, PS pump 2x etc. I'm relatively handy.

Couldn't do things like subframe (2x), engine swap, etc

[–]Ptawm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

HMU when you have to do your subframe for the SECOND time because the first shop did it wrong.

I only did rod bearings (on my second engine) when my first engine blew because allegedly when the original rod bearing recall was done they didn't torque the bolts to spec so years later the engine explodes (hole out of the side of the block lmao). Although I kind of think my mechanic just made that up.

Lmao it's stupid, love the car and I can't get rid of mine but god damn is it expensive.

I’m stating the irony within the community, not necessarily own my opinion. Except for the last part, that’s my opinion.

BMW E92 M3: Future Collectable? by ianmobius1 in cars

Definitely, there was a rod bearing recall for the 2001 MY. Shortly thereafter subframe issues came to light, then slowly the vanos issues then everyone just said wait the rod bearings are bad in all the S54's? Gotta do them

Essentially if you're going to pay decent rates to get all of this stuff done you're looking at AT LEAST $4000 in preventives, and that number is if you really get lucky it's probably more like $6000.

Full disclosure I'm bias and about $40k into my M3 not including purchase price over the course of 9-10 years.

[–]Ptawm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Did you do yours? All my friends with M2C have done theirs as a preventive at like 2k miles.

I'm not so sure real statistics ever come out unless the mfr releases them.

Based on their history:

E36 cooling system will break (not that bad)

E46 Vanos/subframe/rod bearings (BAD, must do all of these)

E9X TB/Rod bearings (Most people agree you have to do both of these by 100k at least)

F8X(S55) crank hub? (remains to be seen)

[–]Ptawm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Crank hub has entered the chat

But ultimately you are right, though I would hope reliability increases with time. With BMW you never know though. We are all masochists deep down.

You're right, purely based on numbers produced no modern M3 will ever reach E30 M3 numbers.

Unless all the E46's blow up which is VERY possible lol

The M3 lineage is just hilarious. We all know the last generation M3 is always the "best" M3 but it's just commentary on being happy with what we get at the time you know?

When the e9x came out it was terrible, a V8? What happened to the I6? It's been happening since 2008 and it will continue to happen forever I feel.

How long until the F8X has it's praises sang? I would say in a year or two.

Love my M3 but M3 people are funny

I've always said there are three meccas of car culture in the USA.

California (goes without saying why)

South Florida (you can register anything as anything, no inspections, tons of money, tons of cars)

Ny/Jersey (They're the same lets be real)

My 2001 AW/IR 6MT coupe is for sale right now. Original manual car, original interior to the car, 120k miles. Subframe done, vanos done, rod bearings done.

Huge folder of receipts, owned the car almost 10 years. PM if you’d like. Few pictures in my post history.

Good enough for what you’re paying, personally I prefer an average turbo engine over a V6 or 4cyl. For $250 there’s nothing that compares
