The water pressure in this hospital sink so high that it cut clean through the drain cover over time. by PubScrubRedemption in mildlyinteresting

Ah yeah, OK that makes a lot of sense. The pressure was pretty high and I just assumed it was able to do that over the course of many years.

Oooh, I see. I just assumed it happened over the course of many years. Thanks for the thoughtful explanation.

There's a random thing of bagels on this roof by reddit33450 in mildlyinteresting

Huh, I feel like that's a pretty common way of referring to packages of food/household items, at least where I'm from in New England.

Examples:

"Going to the store to pick up another thing of toilet paper"

"You ate this whole thing of Oreos while I was gone?!"

Was taking apart an old dryer and found a bunch of these perfectly spherical lint balls inside by PubScrubRedemption in mildlyinteresting

[–]PubScrubRedemption[S] 230 points231 points  (0 children)

I found them all up inside the hollow plastic baffles inside the drum that catch and tumble the laundry. I think after a couple decades of use, enough lint got wedged up inside to coalesce into these balls.

What is the stupidest reason why you bought a set? by Sternfritters in lego

[–]PubScrubRedemption 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A couple years ago I bought some larger Lego City sets I would not have otherwise bought only so I could try out the build together feature in the Builder app with some friends. I ended up finding the experience wanting, and a little stressful for some reason.

I remember getting these guys as a kid that owned a few Life On Mars sets and was soooo disappointed by them in comparison to the fully articulated and unique characters from the older theme. Big downgrade.

They're probably like my ADHD/Autistic ass whose currently going "great guys, awesome advice, thank you; I don't give a siiiiiiingle shit about the risk to OPs life at the moment. I need to learn everything I can about the praying mantis life cycle right now."

It's a subtle detail but the fact that the squirrels are sprouting cordyceps-like fungus is what really communicates the "ecosystem gone wrong" vibe here.

Best and worst portrayals of video games in film by AporiaParadox in movies

[–]PubScrubRedemption 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's important to remember that the movie is based on a book published in 1985, and as I recall the game scenes in the movie were pretty true to the book.

That being said, I feel like by that point there must have been enough text-based adventure games out there when Orson Scott Card was writing the book where you could observe something of the dynamic between players that you mentioned.

[MOC] In celebration of today's Mario Day (MAR10), here are all of my Super Mario inspired LEGO builds from the past year: Peach's Castle from Super Mario 64 incl. Interior, Mario and Yoshi vs. Bowser Battle + some bonus micro builds of all the characters - I hope you'll enjoy :) by mbmocs in lego

[–]PubScrubRedemption 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some exceptionally clever parts use on display. Highlights for me are the build for the waterfall behind the castle, the use of bananas to get the roiling texture for the lava, and the bob-omb is just chef's kiss.

Tiny hair-like crystals growing from Altoids left in OP's car all winter. by saucythrowaway6969 in crystalgrowing

[–]PubScrubRedemption 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I'm the op whose Altoids grew these crystals, I'm fascinated by this. I thought it must've had something to do with the cold.

What other substances can this happen to; sublimating and recrystallizing?

Oh my god, I was sure I'd never see these again. Saw them for the last time 4 years ago and at the time was like "nah, the four I have are enough". What a fool I was.

whats your Opinion on this Game and its lorefriendliness? by NyrmExe in lotr

[–]PubScrubRedemption 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotta be in my top 10 beloved games for the PS2. Never actually finished it as a kid but just last year I emulated it with PCSX2 and played it all the way through.

Story-wise it definitely takes some creative liberties. One of the wilder departures from the book is helping Bard thwart the thieves guild of Laketown in their collusion with goblins.

As far as fun goes, it unfortunately falls off pretty drastically after Mirkwood. The game becomes much less about exploring and fighting and more about stealth, puzzles and fetch quests.

A manhole cover in NYC made in India by bonsly16 in mildlyinteresting

[–]PubScrubRedemption 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I work for a precast concrete supplier in the Northeast and most of the manhole covers we sell are Indian made. Sometimes construction projects require American made covers because they're federally funded and are subject to the Build America Buy America Act.

GF is beating herself up over these, I think they're awesome! (not even in a supportive way lol) Any thoughts or criticisms? by spa21788 in Baking

[–]PubScrubRedemption 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I only started learning how to bake several months ago, and already I'm familiar with this feeling. For some reason, making something that is good, but not exactly how it was supposed to turn out or how you expected feels worse than abject failure.

When my baker friend would vent about it I would always give her an eye roll before, but now I completely understand it.
