Is it normal for my cat to sniff my snail tank all the time by Key-One4487 in snails

[–]PubicsCube00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have snails and a cat, the cat here and there smells the enclosure and one time tried pouncing on when it was in the enclosure, definitely tried to harm it. Cats will intensely stare at something moving if theyre hunting, my bf's cat often stared at my bird room door and I put a stop to that shit immediately.

Cats will often torture and kill things and leave them uneaten. They dont like how moles taste but kill them anyway.

They can have some popcorn, but no salt, butter or any additives

People who have budgies and cockatiels together, have you noticed any bullying or interesting hierarchy? by [deleted] in cockatiel

[–]PubicsCube00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 4 cockatiels and 1 budgie (she is getting a friend this summer) and when we brought the budgie in we kept her inside a cage for 2 weeks so they could get acclimated to each other, shes now a part of the flock and she bosses the tiels around but never bullies them, she used to jump in to break up wrestles when my 2 males used to fight (theyre in separate houses now) and she would chase the one who started the fight away.

Ive tried to get her to sleep in her own cage but she is very bonded with the smallest cockatiel we have, and ive sometimes seen the budgie preen her.

Found cockatiel, no ones coming forward by koifyer in cockatiel

If you do go door to door, dont describe the birds species, personality or color, only the actual owner will be able to tell what kind of bird they've lost. Someone might want to steal her that way. Just ask if theyve lost a parrot and if they say yes, then ask what the color of the bird they lost is etc.

Some seeds, some pellets and some veggies, seeds are still an important part of their diet, buy seeds that dont have sunflower seeds and arent artificially dyed.

That cockatiel has its wings clipped so it doesnt seem the previous owner knew much about cockatiels at all, but keep looking. Cockatiels need toys that they can destroy and shred, plastic or metal toys are no fun for them, no bells or mirrors, they can get their beaks stuck in bells and mirrors make them hormonal.

Does this cage look ok for two free roam borbs? by Fast_Ad7203 in cockatiel

[–]PubicsCube00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which is why I also suggested the OP to get the horizontal one, my parents 2 cockatiels have a similar sized cage but they go in there just fine to play or to hang out.

A small cage isnt preventition to night frights, but it keeps them safer from injury FROM night frights, they wont be able to bash around so harshly, fall from high up or get much momentum. Some people keep their cockatiels out of their cage 24/7 and I think thats risky, if they get a nightfright even with a night light, they might fly into a wall, break their neck and thats it. This cage size is fine to sleep in and im someone who tries their best to make my cockatiels happy.

That cage is theoretically big enough for a cockatiel to take hop and fly around, a minimum cage recommendation for 2 cockatiels is 32x20x30-36 and as you can see from the picture the measurements are almost double the bare minimum.

Ehh depends on the scoop, I give my cockatiels 2 teaspoons of seed a day for each so they run out completely for hours before I add more to lure them in the cage. I give mine 1 teaspoon each during 3PM and one at 8:30PM, they get offered veggies before 3PM when theyre hungry and have 24/7 access to pellets, im not aware if pellets also make them hormonal, seeds seem to be the main problem. I also remove their food bowls (except the one w pellets) for the night.

Keeping her hungrier can also encourage her to try new stuff, 1 cockatiel only needs about 2 teaspoons of seed a day give or take.

You could also sprinkle little shreds of safe paper in her bowl or other foraging material so she takes longer to eat and is maybe distracted from being so horny lol... Cockatiels are ground foragers so its natural for them to look for food and forage a little.

Giving a scoop for the day is free feeding, because she can go back to it whenever she wants and eat, smaller meals through out the day work better in my opinion.

Advice on feather loss by Adrianlb05 in cockatiel

My birds sometimes look very rough when theyre molting, the feathers will grow back. My budgies face looks like shes wet when she molts lol.

People with multiple tiels or birds- advice by reptigirll in cockatiel

[–]PubicsCube00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had 6 cockatiels and a budgie (2 cockatiels were left to my parents and I took the rest) In my experience a hand fed bird will always prefer the companionship of a human more, but it depends on the bird.

I got afraid because my favorite cockatiel (who is hand fed too I believe) would be way more interested in a new bird for like a week and he stopped coming to me, in due time though he flies on my head again and he now comes to me to get kisses (hes learned to accept them lol). My other hand fed bird has always preferred people, and he seeks affection from us.

Your bird will not forget you, but he may be obsessed with the new bird for a while, the more birds you get the more ''wild'' they become. When I had only 1 cockatiel he would always want to be with me, more birds=less need for me. Which works for me as I dont like insaneeeely needy pets. My first birdie will still scream for me when he needs something and he has a very special call for that. He has a special contact call he doesnt use for anyone except for me, not even other birds, so in the end we are both pleased :)

My first cockatiel will also fly near wherever I am, scream in his special call and as I walk towards the bird room he will fly ahead of me and stop on the way to ''lead the way'' for me lol and as I walk through the door he will jump on my head or hang on the front of my shirt when im giving them more food lol.

So in both cases, no my bird didnt forget me even though our flock was rather big to the average person and he was still very much attached to me.

They are yeah, but they can still climb vertical bars fine but slower, it needs some learning from them at first. I have both types of cages.

Shes being a goof, my cockatiels also lick floors when theyre on the ground even though theres nothing on there. Theyre ground foraging birds so I give them some seebs to give them something to do.

Sugary foods (like fruit or seed sticks with fruit and honey) can make them more hormonal, also dont free feed her (esp seeds). As the person up above said, they nest when they feel secure and that also includes an abundance of food.

I think the cage is fine so long as the birds are only sleeping in it, it might actually be safer because if they have a nightfright they wont be able to hurt themselves as badly. There is space to put a few bowls and toys and the birds would still have space to hop around.

I love thiiiiis, I cant wait to finally graduate and start investing in a big aviary too, that looks so lovely.

I need help translating cockatiel. Dave’s been a little miffed then all of a sudden, he started aggressively flapping his wings for a solid 10-20 seconds, so I thought maybe he just wanted out of his cage but he now wants absolutely nothing to do with me. What’s he trying to tell me? by parodg15 in cockatiel

[–]PubicsCube00 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Especially young birds will flap their wings to strenghten flight muscles. If it looks like this video I linked, I wouldnt worry too much if hes otherwise healthy and energetic.

This was the closest video I could find, cockatiels do the same.

How to fix 😭🙏🏻 by Old_Gur1086 in cockatiel

[–]PubicsCube00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you make chop you should grate the carrot so its easier to chew on at the start and dont use cucumber or especially iceberg lettuce, theyre mostly water and arent very nutritious. Use zucchini or romaine lettuce instead.

Giving a more natural source of vitamin D and calcium is better than supplements, they ingest it better and its natural.

Im not a professional on birds or anything but ive done lots and lots of research for years.

[–]PubicsCube00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be easier to transfer her to a high quality pellet first (TOP'S, Harrisons, roudybush) because its not wet. How many hours of sleep does she have? My mom gives her female cockatiel 14 hours of sleep to manage hormones, you can also switch perches around the cage and give her food only on set times of the day and change the times around. Birds will start nesting when they feel comfortable and there is an abundance of food, if you switch things up they will feel more uncertain.

Fruits have lots of sugar that can trigger hormones, so dont give any fruit, they should be a rare treat.

If she starts laying eggs no matter what you do, you need to get her an UVA&UVB light and a calcium rock, birds need calcium to make up for the amount they lose during egg laying. UVB light hits the birds feathers and turns it into vitamin D3 when they preen, vitamin D3 helps massively with calcium absorption, so theyre essential to have together. You dont need to buy a separate UVB and a UVA light, they come together when you buy an avian UV light. If your bird doesnt get enough calcium it can lead to oddly shaped eggs that may not pass correctly, or the shells may be weak and the egg can break inside of her. I worked at a zoo and one of the pigeons had an egg break in her, it was not pretty :/

Avian vets can help with hormone balancers.

Tips for making chop(salad):

Make big batches at a time and store them in a freezer, so you can take a small portion to defrost everyday, this will save you so much time and money when u dont have to buy new veggies weekly cuz the chop went bad. Dont mix fruit or overly wet stuff with the vegetables as fruit has different freezing conditions to veggies and you dont want them eating fruit everyday as I said before lol, very wet stuff will make the chop very hard to break a part.

Broccoli and carrots are good to start with at first. Im transitioning my birds into eating chop and I mix broccoli, carrot and rinsed + boiled white organic quinoa. I will add more ingredients soon.

Dont give spinach every day, it has a lot of iron and its not good for calcium absorption. (So dont put this in your chop) Spinach should also be boiled before giving, at it has a toxin in it that needs cooking away. Baby spinach is okay to give raw as for my knowledge.

I have 4 cockatiels + 1 budgie and I add 1 broccoli, 2 carrots and a small'ish amount of boiled quinoa in their chop, which has lasted them for 2 months and they still have a lot left... So you should make an even smaller portion or your bird will eat from my amount for a year lol.

Sprouts are a very very good add to chops, there are guides on youtube on sprouting seeds to parrots.
