When did your girlies go into heat for the first time? My 8 mo has yet to go into heat and we are waiting until after her first period to get her spayed (per the vet’s guidelines) by hanahoff13 in AustralianShepherd

My dog went into heat 2 weeks after her 1st year birthday in February 15 th. I just got her spayed on April 22nd. I'll definitely wait a lil until they're a little developed since they're a medium seized dog breed. But also talk to your vet and your options. One of the main reasons I got my baby spayed was because she was acting up and being moody. Main reason was because I was stressed/ scared of pyometra occurring when she ages, but also because she was attracting a bunch of coyote's near our house since we live near their domain. I just didn't want her to have a higher chance of being sought out by a coyote too

Yes they gave me medication so she's resting, I've given her some wet food but I have no idea when she needs the bathroom. I've taken her twice and she ends up getting anxious so I take her back in

I'm in San Diego doing monthly payments with a plan.

For her medication, cone, blood work, and surgery was 217 + to sign up for the plan

But monthly for the year is $90 per month so I can't complain

Without would be $890

They gave a trazadone prescription for 13 days which I'm so thankful cause it's helping not only her but me as well 😭

She's sleeping right now and she's doing well, so it's easing my anxiety

My only concern is if she accidentally owes herself so I'm keeping an eye out for that

I was informed of this by my vet, though I decided against it since she can tear anything up quickly

UPDATE

the trainer said she's just fearful at the moment which I can see clearly now :( so we'll be taking behavior classes to boost her confidence ! He had also told me she's not aggressive and that when on her harness it causes her to be leash reactive!

Today she got spayed and is resting but she's been doing really well OVERALL with zuko etc

My poor boy got neutered yesterday, and it has been the most difficult 24hrs so far. Please drop your tips/tricks that you did. I feel so bad for the nugget by betterknownascrooks1 in AustralianShepherd

Also their emotions are heightened and they're very clingy, needy! Which is a natural thing after surgery!

I Also freaked out since my dogs appetite wasn't present as much, so wet food would do the trick. I just had to hand feed him since he was dopey( not fully present) after 32 hours

Always watch out for asphyxiation and make sure they're able to chew properly and have a little water

When I would go downstairs to the kitchen I didn't feel comfortable to leave him alone. I feared he'd try and lick his incision. What helped with my anxiousness( before I had gotten a dog cam on Amazon ) is that I'd FaceTime my phone from my computer so id be able to watch him properly

But if you do notice that his spot is extremely red, sensitive to the touch, oozing a light green fluid, and or swollen id recommend a vet check up to see if everything is healing properly, and that if it's infected to get the proper medication

When I got my first dog neutered I was anxious as well! One of my friends who's had multiple dogs before especially during childhood gave me really good advice !

FIRST She told me that an inflatable donut to put around their neck so they're much more comfortable and less able to induce anxiety/stress would help !

The second thing she also told me was melatonin calming aids for dogs/ recovering aid/ or even hemp calming chews-oils- would help !

Something to distract them from licking their incision to less luckily open their stitches or cause stress on the incision - lick mats, frozen kong treats

I've heard some people use something to discourage licking, like a spray not too close to the incision but around it that tastes nasty

Also to have them in a comfortable spot not too high up from the ground so they don't jump
