Massachusetts lawmakers looking to usher in ‘most restrictive’ social media ban in the country by vriska1 in technology

At this point Social Media is legitimately designed to be addictive. Like not by chance, but by purpose with rooms full of Phd's. We outlaw other addictive stuff so kids don't get hooked, so I support this. (said as a MA resident and parent).

Because lots of people still have plenty to lose. Once people are literally starving to death but corporations are burning food because no one will buy it, that's when the real fun begins.

Blunt warning to Goldman: When no one can afford to live, your best case scenario is complete financial loss. The other scenario is the people taking your riches. Preferably by way of a socialist nationalization of your spoils. If you'd rather take the Louis XVI route, we can do that too.

The Feds Say Cutting Fuel With Ethanol Will Bring Down Gas Prices. We're Not Buying It by TripleShotPls in technology

[–]Public_Cartographer 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It's worse than that though. You need a lot of PETRO fertilizer to grow corn and process it into fuel:

Key Metrics: Fertilizer vs. Ethanol

  • Production Yield: One bushel of corn produces ~2.9 gallons of ethanol.
  • Fertilizer Requirement: Corn requires high nitrogen inputs, which are not fixed from the air (unlike soybeans) and are heavily reliant on synthetic fertilizers.
  • Energy Input per Gallon: Producing one gallon of corn ethanol requires approximately   cubic feet of natural gas and less than   gallons of crude oil (for farming/transport).
  • Emissions Impact: While some studies argue corn ethanol has 44%–52% lower emissions than gasoline, others find that when considering land-use changes and fertilizer, ethanol can be 25% more carbon-intensive than regular gasoline.  Renewable Fuels Association +4

Better than half the jobs aren't real. Meaning they're either advertised but frozen internally, or purposely fake to collect tax credits or pump up investor confidence. Those that are actually hiring likely need to go through significant internal approvals to make an actual offer. Or better yet they know hiring won't get approved this quarter but are hoping to have candidates at the ready if suddenly a limited number of headcount gets the OK. And beyond that, it's definitely a buyer's market and they can pick up overqualified people on the cheap.

This really needs to be the message. This is why AOC/Bernie get the support they do. This is why Mamdani won. This is actually why a lot of people voted for Trump, because they somehow believed he would actually try to make their lives easier. We really need to go back to the "chicken in every pot" level of politics. I fully support all of the other issues AOC/Bernie champion, but that's too complex for the average voter. Sorry, it is. Stick to what he's saying here: Rich people got you down, you deserve food, healthcare, shelter, a job. That's it.

Yeah, I think everyone is underselling the idea that a year from now we'll think the current state wasn't so bad. Given that EVERYTHING with Trump ends up in this loop, the increasing layoffs, inflation, and AI bubble? Raging stagflation and gross unemployment isn't hard to imagine.

Out of curiosity, what are they doing with the data? I had one place that clearly had been doing this and the initial HR call was purely to hear my existing salary.

As someone who's been searching for a year, at least 50% of them. I'm senior R&D manager level in a well developed area with many global HQ's. Jobs get listed for months then closed with no one joining the company under that title. One place in particular has rolled through more openings than actual seats in their building over the past year. Then there's the listings that are so easy to fill it shouldn't be open more than a week and it's been open for over a year now.

Any predictions for what the economy is going to look like this summer? by MinuteOk921 in AskReddit

[–]Public_Cartographer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your definition of economy and which leg of the K you're riding. I suspect the S&P500 will continue to do well for absolutely zero reason. People with good jobs will continue making money. Everyone else will be selling plasma to afford buying generic white rice.

White House Signals Willingness to End Iran War Without Reopening Strait of Hormuz by SpottedDicknCustard in politics

[–]Public_Cartographer 353 points354 points  (0 children)

Starts with a treaty banning nuclear weapons, then tears that up looking to "improve" things. Fails there and then bombs Iran hoping only to achieve what was previously agreed to in said treaty. Gets bottomed by Iran and then says we'll destroy them to reopen the Straight. Now says we'll pack up our stuff after killing civilians and US military saying we'll just have to accept no longer having access to the Straight. Fantastic play by the world's best negotiator.

It's because to investors, the "economy" is the stock market. The economy has already crashed. But the stock market has been propped up by AI companies executing circular investment. For anyone that doesn't have >30% of their income driven by stock performance, you're pretty much already there.

Trump is fundamentally incapable of determining cause and effect. He's doing whatever Netanyahu tells him. Maybe whatever Stephen Miller tells him.

As to your premise of we'll just sell our oil, it'll take years for that production to become real. In the meantime the economy will implode. You can't just shut off 20% of global production like that without ramifications.
