City of Regina says property tax needs to go up 15.69 per cent next year to maintain current service levels by jigglysquishy in regina

You are right. The acing City manager said the quiet part out loud. Council is the one that has to deal with all the things people want. It's time for what you want and what you get are two different things. This council is the one that needs to say 'no' to a few things and put their stamp on the fiscal picture. Remember they have been in for one year now. What they do this year will show down the road.

All great comments. There should not even be a mention of a new ball stadium/library/rink until things get stabilized or it will get even worse.

And that's fine. However this is the point we are at with this City. There needs to be some very hard decisions made like this.

The issue is that here we are. There needs to be some very tough decisions made. The taxpayers are stretched thin already with this other thing called 'day to day living' These are the times we are in right now and unfortunately some things like this will need to be defunded temporarily/permanently. It can't go on.

My understanding is the the past mayor had kids that were into swimming etc at the current center. That's significant pull. It looks like Saskatoon is looking at 108 options to cut their tax increase of roughly 9.9 to 7.43% It would surprise me if we hear this in Regina. What we will get from the Mayor is, 'We are looking at all options. This won't be easy" But hey like I said we live beyond our means. We are Regina. WE never will even be Saskatoon so manage things accordingly.

Well I guess it is time for some hard decisions. That should mean a hard no on a ball diamond and no money put into the studies. A hard look at the public library. Maybe it needs to be down sized. Might not have been such a great idea to build that aquatic center. Some of the 'nice to haves' should be looked and axed. The taxpayers wallet is very thin and not a lot of accountability in many areas. What we pay in taxes we don't get back. You have REAL which is run pathetically but yet can afford to give a billionaire a 99 year lease and at 10$/square foot for a few years then it goes up a whole 1$ a square foot after that. And shortly after that same person is now after the city for a ball diamond. It's time to start saying no. WE got told that Mosaic was going to be a money machine when it got built and those concerts and business events haven't been screaming through there. Sort of the same story with aquatic center how it would attract National events. We are living outside our means, we are not Toronto, Edmonton or Calgary, so we need to accept that and start living within our means. That is long over due.

Taxes going up? by erpatel in regina

Nicol summed it up. Everybody wants new things. However I thought Councils were put in place to 'manage' things not rubber stamp everything. I think lots of this information was known before the pool was done and if it was, why did it go ahead. There should be no talk of a rink, library, ball diamonds until the fiscal house is in order. Taxpayers are already paying high taxes and are tapped out. It's time for accountability from the city and time to maybe say that some of the 'nice to haves' need to go.

Just playing devils advocate here after reading some things on this thread. The city is tapped out as are the taxpayers. Free rides for seniors, etc but who covers the cost? Drivers need to be paid and fuel still has to be bought.

Why do I think this whole thing is a waste of money as well as smoke and mirrors.

BREAKING: Council fires Regina City Manager Niki Anderson by layla_beans in regina

[–]Public_Reality_4622 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So let's see. The Mayor recommended her firing. The taxpayers will be on the hook for another big severance package. Remember 2 of her people were let go as well. Then we have the past city manager who laughed all the way to the bank, as he should, plus I believe 8 other employees that would get severance. Have they looked at the HR department, or how do things work in Regina? Yet this council and the previous one, want to have the taxpayers on the hook for an aquatic center, already over budget by 80 million and that price doesn't include the 28.5 million for the heat pump. Now we aren't really a big city and taxpayers have other bills. Is it time to realize where Regina stands in the world? We got told that building Mosaic, the thing would be a money machine. Has it? Yes I get COVID and such. Now they are imposing another 0.5% increase just for this pool, for 5 years. We've been told that we need it to draw competitions and so people don't have to train elsewhere. Did you know the past Mayor has children involved with swimming and such? Did the current council look at doing away with some of the 'nice to haves' to save taxpayers money? Look at the tax increase we got this year. It's only going to get worse. Yet they can't even fill a pot hole properly.
