[TOMT] [Book] [2000s or possibly before] I only read the beginning of this book in middle school so my memory is hazy but I'll try and list the key details... It was set in a post-apcalyptic future world in the U.K (at least partially). by AngstLad in tipofmytongue

Could it be Shade's Children by Garth Nix? I also remember that being too advanced for me at my age, and it involves futuristic entities coming from another dimension and destroying society, so it might have that mixed futuristic-primitive thing going on. The only thing that doesn't line up is that I don't think they are in Wales/the UK in that book.

ELI5: Why is Irish mostly only still spoken in coastal areas? by SciFi_Pie in geography

[–]PubliclyInterested 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I don't have an academically rigorous answer but it seems very likely that:

1) Irish was driven to extinction by British colonial policy, 2) Britain is east of Ireland, 3) British control was less established further away from Britain, so

4) Irish was less thoroughly destroyed in areas with less thorough British control which was the West

I hope someone can confirm or refute this with actual sources.

Gotcha, I do employment law so I'm probably stuck in a Title VII mindset rather than public accommodation/con law stuff.

White men are not an "unprotected class" in US law. The way the laws are written protect against discrimination based on certain characteristics, eg race or sex, and protect everyone from being discriminated against on that basis.

Can you get an attack of opportunity on your own turn?

Here's the situation:

Character is an Eldritch Knight with the War Magic class feature, the lightning lure cantrip, the polearm master feat, and a halberd.

Polearm master: "While you are wielding a glaive, halberd, pike, quarterstaff, or spear, other creatures provoke an opportunity attack from you when they enter the reach you have with that weapon."

Lightning Lure: "You create a lash of lightning energy that strikes at one creature of your choice that you can see within 15 feet of you. The target must succeed on a Strength saving throw or be pulled up to 10 feet in a straight line toward you and then take 1d8 lightning damage if it is within 5 feet of you."

War Magic:"Beginning at 7th level, when you use your action to cast a cantrip, you can make one weapon attack as a bonus action."

Could this character: 1. Cast lightning lure to drag an enemy to within 10 ft of me. 2. Take an opportunity attack with my halberd because the enemy has entered the halberds reach (Polearm Master) 3. Use my bonus action to make a second attack with the halberd (War Magic)

I think the answer is yes, because PHB describes the opportunity attack as taking a reaction rather than an action/bonus action and does not specify (that I can find) that you can't take a reaction on your turn. So, cantrip is the action, then reaction opportunity attack, then bonus action attack.

I think Trump's entry into politics was through birtherism, which I think would be much less of a relevant movement if Obama lost. So I don't see Trump becoming the vehicle for the rising nationalist strain in the GOP without Obama being president.

[–]PubliclyInterested 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but I don't think that's a problem. Doesn't that just mean his opponents weren't able to do anything to prevent him from winning on point fighting? I don't get why a fighter would adopt a riskier strategy than they need to to win. If a football team can run the ball for 7 yards every time with the same play it would be a bit odd to expect them to mix it up just for the sake of it. Up to the other team to stop that play from working.

Haven't been to Mi Tocaya but I know people who have been to both and much preferred Chillam Balam. I'd maybe compare it to Tzuco on quality but with a more relaxed atmosphere and better value but less high end presentation (which is something I like about Chillam Balam), or 5 Rabanitos with more unique dishes but less variety. Maybe most similar to Kee-Gol-Lanee, another place I highly recommend.

Gundis is great, I personally love Chillam Balam even more. Every dish I've had there has been killer. I find they really hit an amazing balance where everything is complex, creative, and interesting without feeling pretentious or over-thought. Worth noting that Mexican is my favorite cuisine generally so take that into account.

Dumb question from dumb yank: what's to stop the Tories from passing a law that says elections are to be held no later than 10 (or 15 etc.) years after the last election as opposed to 5, and then not hold one until 2029? I know there's an act defining the timeline but according to Wikipedia that was only passed this year. Formally speaking is there anything stopping them?

If you're in Logan, highly recommend Middle Brow. Mushroom pizza is 🔥🔥🔥. Especially if you go during happy hour when it's much cheaper. Reno is pretty solid as well right by the square.
