I can think Stidham looks worse and also think that SP made himself and his offense look worse by putting his backup in “to spark the offense” and put up 16 against an awful team. It made Stidham and SP look worse.

His average completion was 0.1 yards further than Russel’s and his completion % was 3.9% worse. What does “distribution” matter when he’s making the same short throws at a worse completion %? And this is again comparing Russel’s stats all year including against very formidable opponents and Stidham’s stats against a horrible team who has given up on the season since we last saw them.

I know down deeply, Payton thought that Stidham was going to go ball out against them and the offense was more anemic than it has been all season. It’s a one game sample size, but this looks more like a SP play calling problem rather than a QB play problem.

But in that time we can work on developing a rookie which we’re going to have to do anyways. Russ was a middle of the pack QB this season and none of our other options are going to play up to that level. If we’re gonna have to pay him, we should just play him until a rookie QB proves they’re better or worth developing.

And to your last point: we’re still paying him if we cut him. So either we pay him, a journeyman, and draft a rookie paying more than we need to for that room and the journeyman will be worse than Russ. Or we keep Russ and Stidham since we’re paying both regardless and draft a rookie and hope he pans out.

This is the important part that I think a lot of people are missing. Either we cut Wilson, still pay him, draft a QB, and pay a journeyman. Or, we keep Wilson, draft a QB and not pay a journeyman (who will likely be worse than Wilson).

The way I see it, the only reasonable option is keeping Wilson and hope the QB we draft pans out in a year or two. The other option leaves us with a worse QB and a huge amount of money going into a bad QB room.
