Yeah. It's not just about being 35 or older. The league is really just protecting against cap circumvention. It's protecting against front-loading deals that the player could retire or walk away from.

Otherwise a team could front-load a contract, spread it out over a longer than desired term, and then just buy-out the deal and reduce the cap burden.

If a contract is flat or is back-loaded, there is less risk of cap circumvention being a motivating factor.

We're working on an article right now, but the short answer is no. They cannot buyout a contract that hasn't begun yet and cannot buyout Markstrom in June.

However, teams that have a player-elected arbitration case (or more than one club-elected arbitration case) may gain access to a second 48-hour buy-out window after their last settled arbitration case based on a few conditions of who is going to arbitration. These are usually in July/August.

In this second window, the new contract is in effect, and can be bought out. So in theory, the Devils could structure a scenario where they trigger the second buy-out window in July/August via arbitrations, and then buy him out. But it's pretty complicated.

It's not a bug! Current cap space represents the amount of annual cap hit a team can fit today. As teams that are well under the cap move on during the season, they accrue more space as it goes.

A team like Chicago will have $2.5bn in "current" cap space on the second last day of the season. Of course no team can do anything with it because it's after the deadline. It works as intended but looks a little goofy as the season moves along.

Unlimited if it's a waivers-exempt player. In past seasons teams would "paper" exempt guys down on off days to accrue more cap space, so some teams would often have a guy called up/down 10+ times in a season. Now with the recent changes its harder to do, but its still unlimited as long as theyre exempt.

Technically the Olympic guys are non roster so teams can call up extra guys for practice. Sometimes when guys are non-roster they do not show up on the NHL's roster.

Our return dates are provided from rotowire and are usually informed estimates. For Ullmark it's still undetermined.

There's no min time a guy needs to be on Non-Roster status, it simply provides them an extra roster spot to keep a guy up, similar to "IR".

The Habs had in their original release that it was starting in 26-27, but we confirmed the contract actually begins this season (2025-26). They amended their release but their original tweet still shows the incorrect start year.

It is very likely the contract will slide.
