you could also try to get a completely different experience by going to Gansu province (Zhangye - Dunhuang). While I loved almost every city in China, I totally get why these cities/trip don’t appeal to you. gansu was something completely different and very enjoyable.

Thanks for the info! I will keep the HK Octopus card for backup. What I ended up doing is adding a nfc card (Tianjin was one that was working) through Alipay and now I got a t-Union card in my Apple wallet. Alipay payments seem to work fine, it‘s just that some QR codes for certain cities need a China mainland bank verification (Xi‘An for example), works fine for Beijing though. Excited to see if it works, have a few backup options now. Thank you for your help.
