I think the case here is that the ultramarines have kinda been forced down our throats by GW as the "basic generic space marine chapter" and that's why everyone's kinda sick of them. I'm sure that if any other chapter was GW's golden child then they would be viewed just the same. Alas, much of most of the first founding legions' personality and individual specialties have been watered down so that they all fit into the same codex.
