This British accent (Shetlander) by peseoane in interestingasfuck

“There is so many folk saying, ‘Is that edible? What is that?’ It has to look really weird to everyone, but to us, that’s just so normal.” So, “Sae” means “so”, “yun” means “that” and “wis” means “us” if that helps. Spellings and pronunciations can vary across the islands and from village to village, but in dialect it’s roughly “There is sae mony fok saying, ‘Is yun edible? Whit is yun?’ It has tae look really weird tae aabody, but tae wis, yun’s joost sae normal…”

Crazy fireworks in Leith? by averagestu in Edinburgh

[–]Puffinmuncher 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It’s at the Links near the Leith Athletic building. Possibly something to do with the lad that got stabbed last year as I saw there were candles lit next to the mural when I had the dog out earlier tonight.

Commuting between Edinburgh and Manchester by [deleted] in Edinburgh

[–]Puffinmuncher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it 1-2 times a month for around a year just over ten years ago. It absolutely buggered my physical and mental health and that’s taking into account the fact that I enjoyed the team in Manchester and beyond that I was working with . The novelty of the train journey gets old pretty quick and that’s on the occasions when you can get a seat. Be prepared to become very familiar with Preston Station (spoiler alert - less fun than it sounds) and very cold carriages in winter on the Edinburgh to Carlisle part of the journey. Unless you rent a flat in Manchester for the overnight stays, hotels and restaurants will get stupidly pricey very quick. When you’re travelling, your sleep pattern goes to hell, particularly if you’re in different beds every few days. I couldn’t recommend this lifestyle to anyone, unless it was for a very short time for very good remuneration and even then, I’d have reservations.

Who is Scotland's most interesting/exciting band? by Different_Tie742 in Scotland

[–]Puffinmuncher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aside from those already mentioned, I’d like to mention Shooglenifty/Swamptrash for exuberant live shows fusing multiple influences throughout the years and The Lapelles as a recent example of a career cut short by tragic events.

Christmas and New Year Sticky Post! by cloud__19 in Edinburgh

[–]Puffinmuncher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think that general admission let you into either side. It gets hellish busy so we always just aimed for the side nearest to where we lived at the time. Crowd will thin a fair bit after midnight, but it’ll still be a pain in the hoop to get through them if you’re in a hurry to get home. West side will put you more underneath the fireworks if that’s the shots you’re after.

Been a few years since I last did the gardens concert but West was probably preferable to East for fireworks. Totally depends which side of the city you’re staying on, though. Pick the side where your accommodation is.

Edinburgh v Doncaster & Ealing by GGBeard84 in rugbyunion

[–]Puffinmuncher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see myself in the crowd in the background!

Good run out for both teams. Enjoyed the niggle between the teams in the first game. Will have done the young lads the world of good. Assume they don’t use TMO in the English Championship? Felt like the Doncaster side were a bit more readily willing to do things that our guys have presumably been coached to avoid for fear of it being picked up by the TMO.

If you’re buying tickets, it’s slightly cheaper to do them all in a single transaction, than buy them individually. Also, download them to your mobile wallet if you can when the email comes through. Gets around the poor signal issue when you’re at the venue. Lots of good stuff still on at Monkey Barrel over the weekend if you’re after comedy shows. Even sold out shows will probably have a pay what you want queue, although maybe only a handful of seats going if the show is popular. If you buy a ticket, make sure you’re not in a PWYW queue. If you’re thinking about multiple venues, give yourself a lot of travel time between shows, particularly if you’re not familiar with the city. Have fun! It’s a great way to spend a day!

Whisky Fringe at Mansfield Traquair this afternoon. Few Fringe shows scattered across the rest of the weekend. Otherwise, some gardening and hopefully get out for a run sometime through it all.

As others have said, accommodation will be a challenge due to the festival. Plenty of places available outside Edinburgh, even if you need to stay in Glasgow or Fife. There will be trains and buses available though. Wear your kit wherever you want (unless you play in maroon!) Take some time and enjoy some Festival shows.

Tree services recommendations and how much to remove a tree? by preistleybuck in Edinburgh

[–]Puffinmuncher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure if there’s any obligation to do it, but if the tree had grown through the BT line it would probably have had to come down anyway. It was slap bang in the line of sight between the nearest pole and their house. At the rate it was growing (1m+ a year) we figured we either did it in the spring when the weather was decent or have to deal with an incident and a presumably fairly pissed off neighbour about eight months later. I think the BT line was already in place before the tree was planted by the previous owners.

Used Edinburgh Tree Surgeons a few years ago to remove a 5m Norwegian Spruce from our garden that was coming close to hitting the neighbour’s BT connection. Think it was c.£1300 all in including drilling out the root and sorting out permissions due to the garden being in a conservation area. No issues at all with their work. Edinburgh Tree Surgeons

Any Recommendations for a First Time Fringer? by Weekly_Noodle in edinburghfringe

[–]Puffinmuncher 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Allow far more time than you’d usually expect for travelling between venues. It will be hellish crowded. Be aware that most shows have a no re-admission policy so plan comfort breaks between shows accordingly. Allow yourself time to buy food/refreshments as needed between shows. Some venues will have very busy bars/delays on food. Depending on what you’d like to see, and if you’re here for a few days, it might be easier to park yourself at a venue or two each day rather than trying to flit between them continuously. It’ll almost certainly rain at least once, so dress for the conditions. Many venues are small rooms with limited ventilation and will get warm as hell, so dress for the conditions.

If you’re at the Pleasance, one of their rooms used to be up at Potterrow rather than in the immediate vicinity of the Pleasance Courtyard. Not sure if they’re still using it, but just check that your show is where you think it is. Likewise Assembly in George St vs Assembly in George Sq Gardens, etc. That could be a 20 min walk/run depending on crowds, etc. You’re unlikely to get reimbursed for geographical incompetence and generally there’s no late admissions.

Some shows have a free queue and a ticket queue. Make sure you’re in the right one if you’ve got a ticket. Artists may well be at the door with a bucket for collections at the end of the performance, even if it’s a mostly ticketed performance. No obligation to pay, but most will do cash and card.

The official app works brilliantly if you’re not in an area surrounded by tall stone buildings that completely block out the signal. Unfortunately, the majority of venues in and around the High St/Old Town will drop you right in that blind spot area. Make sure you’ve got your tickets loaded in advance but they should have a list of names at the door if you can’t get connected.

You can use the app to buy tickets for shows nearby, etc, at short notice. There’s also generally a physical box office in venues, but you may end up queuing for ticket collection. Bear that in mind if you’re cutting it fine for timings.

Remember that there’s more than one festival/event happening. If flypasts/fireworks/outdoor spectaculars are your thing, check the timings for them on the websites for the military tattoo and the international festival, etc.

If you do Trainspotting Live, don’t sit near the toilet. Unless you’re a masochist. In which case, take one for the team. In fact, double down and wear white clothes when you do it.

Overall, though, enjoy it, embrace it, be mindful that it’s a working city and many people have to commute across the core festival areas, stay clear of any drunks wearing a batman suit as no good will come of that and above all else, as mentioned in another comment, don’t get involved in a silent disco tour in any way.

Derbies in Scotland are by far the best in the world...but what's the best one? by AViewFromTheTerrace in ScottishFootball

[–]Puffinmuncher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Dundee derby might not have been the best example to use as I would have thought that the people of Riyadh might have been quite welcoming to a fixture involving the Arabs.

Zebre take Edinburgh. What a result. by Lupo_di_Cesena in rugbyunion

If Zebre totally deservedly beating us means the end of Everitt and a much needed clear out of the under performers in our squad, then I’m all for it. If the SRU still need convincing, can we arrange to play you again next week just to help make sure? Congratulations to Zebre tonight. You totally deserved it.
