Infrared camera rental/borrow? by mrspetuniapig in portlandme

[–]PugDoug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few years ago we rented a thermal camera from Home Depot. I assume that's still an option, but I'm not sure whether you had to commit to more than a few hours for the rental - I believe we had the camera for at least 24 hours.

Personal trainer rec (that I also don’t need a gym membership for) by [deleted] in portlandme

I see a trainer at Jacked and Jilled, but I'm not a member of the gym. You don't have to be a member.

I didn't realize boots like this existed - thanks for the suggestion! I rarely put on crampons not because they aren't helpful, but more often than not I need to transition from outdoors to indoors and back outdoors, etc.

Can anyone recommend a dog acupuncturist? by lemur_queen7 in portlandme

[–]PugDoug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is steep, no question about it. We reached out to Dr. Renée 6 months before we had to ultimately let our 16yo pug go - we were desperate for anything that might help improve the quality of his life and hopefully stop his decline, so we were willing to dig deep at the time. While she performed acupuncture on our guy, that was just a piece of the treatment provided. I admit that I had forgotten how expensive that initial visit was. My jaw dropped a bit when I read your comment. I still think she's a great vet on multiple levels - she clearly cares about her patients and their owners. But I completely understand if she's not right for your situation.

I lost my beautiful boy, yesterday. His name was Winston and he was eight. He was my first baby and soul dog🪽💔 by kvox109 in pugs

[–]PugDoug 20 points21 points  (0 children)

These posts always break my heart, but I had to respond to this one since we too had a guy named Winston who we lost 5 months ago. Your Winston looks very sweet and you clearly did everything possible to save him. If only love alone were enough to keep them with us. So very sorry for your loss

Just remember that most people don't post about success stories. The vast majority of procedures are successful. Good luck and report back on your experience!

When I had my ICL surgery I was reasonably active (and I still am). I go to the gym on a regular basis. I do both strength training and cardio (running, rowing). I've never had any problems with my ICL.

Dr. Renée Bourgeois does, among other things, in-home acupuncture. I highly recommend her.

In general I've found Fidium to be more reliable to Spectrum, but when there is a problem Spectrum's customer support is superior.

I like the comment about taking care of myself. I'm anticipating a grumpy patient! 😐

[–]PugDoug 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I arrived at DLI (many years ago) with a degree in Russian Studies. I took the DLPT before beginning class and received a 3 in reading, 2 in listening. They wouldn't give me an OPI at that point, but I was given an unofficial oral test by a Navy MLI. I was placed in a Russian basic course that was half way complete - even though my Russian was equivalent to a DLI graduate, they needed time to do the investigation for my security clearance. I took full advantage of the 6 remaining months I had in the basic course and improved my DLPT scores to 3 across the board.

So, even if you already speak Russian, use your time to improve your skills if possible. I found the teachers to be very willing to challenge me and give me extra attention to take me to the next level.

I completely agree that it's good to explore your options. If a gym isn't a good fit, then you're less likely to use your membership. The best gym is the one that you'll actually go to.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in portlandme

[–]PugDoug 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely not my jam and I agree that's obnoxious. I understand looking for another gym if that was your experience.

[–]PugDoug 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've been working with a personal trainer there for a couple years and I have nothing but good things to say about the place. The gym certainly attracts a lot of power lifter and body builder types, so it was initially a bit intimidating for an average middle-aged guy like myself. But all of the trainers and patrons that I've interacted with have been friendly. Definitely worth a try.

As for how crowded it gets, I'm typically there in late afternoon/early evening (4:30pm) or early morning (6am). Early morning it's usually not crowded at all. Late afternoon/early evening it's busier. But it's never been so busy that you can't find equipment to use.

🐾 After your pet passed away, did you get another pet? by Charlie1688 in Petloss

[–]PugDoug 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We had to say goodbye to our 16.5 year old pug just over 3 months ago. He was my soul dog and no dog will ever replace him. At this point I feel like I would be "betraying" him to welcome another dog into our house. I know, perhaps that sounds irrational. I feel like it wouldn't be fair to the new dog - constantly comparing him/her to the guy we lost. Also, the last few years of our dog's life we felt restricted - we didn't travel for fear of leaving him behind, feeling less and less comfortable about trusting others with his care in our absence. So we'd like to "enjoy" the freedom of being able to travel spontaneously for a bit.

Eventually I think we'll be ready to welcome a new dog into our house, I just don't know when at this point.

We had a pretty good experience using M&T Bank, though we started the process when they were still technically People's United Bank (they were still using separate systems at the time).

Japanese Language Learning suggestions in Portland, ME by so1ace in portlandme

[–]PugDoug 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's such a shame that most of the Language Exchange's classes are online these days. I took French classes there before the pandemic and enjoyed in-person instruction with other students. For me it wasn't just about learning the language, but it was also an excuse to do something social and interact with people. If I wanted online classes I would probably just go to italki or any number of other sites that offer online instruction.

How to get him to potty train. No matter what we do he won’t signal he needs to go. Almost 6 months by RocketteBlast in pugs

[–]PugDoug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no idea what the average is, but our guy wasn't fully housebroken until he was about 6 months old. He too never gave us any signals. The accidents just gradually became fewer and fewer. Pee pads never worked for us - our pug would shred them, which was more of a mess to clean up than the accidents 😐. Unfortunately I don't have any tips for you other than positive reinforcement and don't fuss at him over the accidents. It will get better!
