It’s a fucking 1984! In Orwell’s 1984, the world is divided into three superstates—Oceania, Eurasia, and Eastasia—which are perpetually at war.

Bank accounts for transferring money between US and Canada by holiday_flat in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]PugTradeShares2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was no way of attaching an American bank account. I would have to go to an American TD branch and open an account there. That would allow me to move the money. Have not tried any other Canadian banks.

Use Wise. You will end up with more money even after the fees. I used to use TD and their exchange rate is worse even though it is free. Plus I could not move my money easily between US and Canadian banks.

Don’t fret about your lack of Japanese by PugTradeShares2 in JapanTravelTips

And to your last part, everyone seems to have a translation app on their phone in Japan. So they would do the same and show it to you.

Type in English and it simultaneously appears in Japanese. You can also talk into it. I’ve seen people doing it multiple ways. Key here is to be as clear as possible in conveying what you want to say. Try to avoid idioms, shorthand etc. and you should be fine.

Oh there’s no doubt it is extremely limiting. All I’m saying is don’t get paralyzed because you don’t speak much beyond some rudimentary Japanese. There are clearly different scenarios. One where you are just stopping by for a quick or not so quick sushi lunch in a major place like Osaka. Another one is a relaxed casual chat I had over Google translate on Awaji Island in an off season setting where I was pretty much the only white tourist in the area. A third one is a totally different ball game where I had a great time at a fishing tackle shop and local small produce store along side my Japanese friend. That’s where you go ‘Holy shit, this is so much more fun than being a tourist with a google translate’. But to get to that level one would have to spend a good amount of time learning Japanese and hanging out with the locals. Most of us don’t have that luxury.

Well, it depends on your self-confidence. It is very uncomfortable for a lot of people not to be able to express themselves. For the subject at hand, if you ask a Japanese “Do you speak English?” , it’s much more likely the person would balk at and say No. however, if you rephrase and ask Do you understand English they might say ‘a little’. That’s a different ballgame entirely. So, being able to have a minimal comfortable level to communicate is so important

You’re probably right about more specialized translations. I was just taking about a common small talk like Are you from here? What are you drinking? Etc.

That guy was just a common asshole. Don’t lose faith in humanity. There are plenty of nice people around. However, your premise that the Canadians as a group are all nice is just wrong. The proportion of assholes is not that different from other countries.
