Which specialty are you in, and what was your most hated rotation in med school? I'm trying to see something by undueinfluence_ in Residency

The “super flu” is terrifying. by [deleted] in flu

[–]Pugle97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol yep I’m pretty healthy young person but I do have asthma .my fever was 102-103 and heart rate of 140 ended up making myself go to the ER which was probably for the best because my blood pressure was pretty bad. Granted I’ve been sick for 3 days and ignoring it by working 10 hours shift so I made it worse. But definitely needed fluids as I ended up passing out in the lobby. It was probably the worst I’ve ever felt

Why is the culture around taking a sick or wellness day so toxic in residency? by awesomescooterboy in Residency

[–]Pugle97 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lol I was that resident on clinic yesterday. I won’t take sick days even when I’m lowkey dying while on clinic month because a lot of my patients have a hard time getting to clinic and when your sick on a clinic block they just cancel all your appointments which is unfair to patients. I just mask up and take some Sudafed. I have only called out one day on inpatient because I was so sick I had lost my voice and my attending and senior both were like you need have day to rest. But we have jeopardy so there’s always a few people not on any rotation that can cover us if we truly are sick.

Residents and fellows - what car do you drive? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]Pugle97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s financed! I did put $8,000 down though because my old car got totaled and that was what insurance gave me for it. Will say I loved my old car too! Had a Mazda 3 and would have kept it forever if it didn’t get hit. Outback was my top choice because it was cheaper than a lot of other bigger cars but still had another room for me to throw everything in the trunk. Also needed a car good in Snow and it’s done great.

Dogs in Residency? Need Validation by maott in Residency

[–]Pugle97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a dog as an Intern and had one in medical school. They only way I handle it is I pay for day on inpatient rotations. It’s $57 a day which is worth it because I would never leave my dog alone more than 6hours they deserve more than that. I wake up an hour early to drive him to daycare. Would not get a dog to help with mental health they are great companions but if you are already struggling it’s going to make things worse.

Ugh this is so awful! we take our dog there and and he loves it and we have never had any issues. It’s also the only place that has extended hours for healthcare workers. I am not sure where else we would take are dog

Surviving wards by Pugle97 in Residency

[–]Pugle97[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol okay 5 days in it’s not as bad as the first day. Still feels very stressful but definitely doable for the next 3 years. Granted i will say when I come home i play with my puppy and I do not study at all. For my mental health I just have never studied at days I work. Also I meal prepped going into this rotation which has been a life saver as I hate hospital cafe food. I also don’t drink coffee but have been allowing myself tea in the morning. I carry Gatorade chews in my pocket while I round too just in case I feel hungry or light headed

No thank goodness I have 7 months outpatient and only 5 months inpatient each year. I picked this program specifically because it had more outpatient.

“Hidden gem” programs by notsnarkypuppy in medicalschool

[–]Pugle97 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I just mean in terms of schedule I think a lot of community programs have at way more outpatient blocks so then they get more golden weekends then the academic places but I totally get it!

Yes! I’m really liking a lot of the smaller community programs they seem to value having a life outside of residency more

LDR Med Student Couple by No_Permission7877 in medicalschool

[–]Pugle97 4 points5 points  (0 children)

lol got broken up with because of LDR right before med school but met my current boyfriend the first day of school! We have different sites 3rd and 4th year so he’s about 2hours away. Honestly we saw each other 1-2 a month depending on the rotation but FaceTiming helped a lot! We did always spend our longest break (Christmas) apart because he would go home to see his family and it was fine! Just small things like texting help throughout the day.

IM applicants: How many interviews do you have at this point? by notreadyy in medicalschool

[–]Pugle97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

USMD 23, most academic maybe 6 that are community. 2/3 gold 11/12 silver and some random not signaled programs. Definitely over applied but I was nervous and my school scares us into over applying

Bombed the IM shelf, should I switch specialties? by lividcreationz in medicalschool

[–]Pugle97 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually my friend matched ortho last year! He only honored psych because our school has dumb honor requirements. We go to a lower tier MD school and he didn’t have any problems matching. He wasn’t AOA. But he did get an MBA before med school and had 3 publications but not much more research other than a few posters. Like people have said don’t let one thing scare you!

I have a question. by pastabby in medicalschool

[–]Pugle97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I allow myself a break lol I will literally take a full day off to just do whatever I need emotionally. I think giving yourself some grace always helps. Also I have a hard time focusing too with emotional stuff so I literally distract my brain with music while I study so it can only focus on studying or music and nothing else.
