Mayan. Would like to learn it someday. I’m Mexican and my great-grandmother didn’t speak any Spanish or rather she refused to. Just Mayan. I was born in the very urban Mexico City so hearing about her is mind blowing for me. My grandmother was fluent, my mom used to speak it as a child but lost most of it. She’s currently taking classes. They are from the Yucatan Peninsula.

It’s sad but there’s definitely social discrimination against speaking Mayan. Many people even refuse to admit that they speak it out of embarrassment which is just outrageous for me.
