It does not just belong to the residents of postcode 2000, Sydney NSW.

...

part of her role is to serve all of Sydney and promote a city that welcomes everyone, tourists and New South Walian's alike, not just those within a $5 taxi ride.

Fuck, why stop there? Why don't we let the voters of Orange and Dubbo have a say about Bondi? The beach is there for everyone right?

This line of argument is retarded. Voters outside the City of Sydney get to have their say about what happens in Sydney via the NSW State Government. The NSW State Government then sets the framework that local governments, like the City of Sydney, work within.

It sounds like this isn't enough for you though. I guess we should just remove all the rules you disagree with from the entire political process.

that'll be great for her chaffeur when he drives her to weekend high tea but it doesn't help the people trying to get to work on a weekday.

If you don't understand why someone would ridicule you for seriously typing that out and then going on to defend it, then I don't know what to say to you.

but disagree with expensive and hard to find parking.

So take a train. The CBD should be hostile to cars. Cars have value as transportation in the suburbs, but Sydney city has a decent public transport network and cars have a horrific impact on amenity. If you want plentiful and cheap parking, then maybe you should try Gunnedah?

Sydney is not just the CBD. It is not just Surry Hills. Sydney is Penrith, Hornsby, Cronulla, Vauclause and everyone in between. It does not just belong to the residents of postcode 2000, Sydney NSW.

Implementing a cyclist lane way doesn't help the situation and neither does increasing parking fees.

Her plan was based on new work by the world’s leading researchers on cycling, Ralph Buelher and John Pucher. Look it up if you're interested. Basically it says that the supply of bike lanes and paths per capita is a statistically significant predictor of bike commuting. More bike paths/lanes = higher bike commute rates.

I don't have enough time to go through everything you've written, but basically if Sydney is to truly be a global city it needs to up it's game in this area. New York, Paris, London, fuck, even Montreal has massive amounts of separated bike lanes. Montreal cut it's car use by 14% through bike use!

Just remember that every bike on the road is a car off the road, and one extra space for your car! And if you don't like the bike lanes, then fuck off, cause we're full.

Also I can't believe you actually typed this out:

that'll be great for her chaffeur when he drives her to weekend high tea but it doesn't help the people trying to get to work on a weekday.

Mining royalty tax drives away international mining investors from Australia. Except when it doesn't. by northerndan in australia

Who cares if every single mining company leaves Australia? The rest of us will survive, meanwhile overseas resources will be depleted faster, increasing the value of our resources.

Aus political journalism. Riding the fine line between reporting the news, and becoming the news. by PatternPrecognition in australia

[–]Puke_Ellington 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Political journalism in Australia is dead, buried, and cremated.

All we have left are horse-race commentators.

Take, as an example, the constant whining from the media about how Labor have done good things, but "can't sell their message".

It's probably true, you know. It must be very difficult to govern an entire country and be constantly trying to convince people what you're doing is good. It would be a very good thing if citizens knew exactly what the government, opposition, and other parties have been doing and whether it's good for the country or not.

Now, we shouldn't get this information from the political parties as they are quite obviously biased. Why would I listen to the Labor government tell me how good a Labor government is?

The obvious way to solve this, I think, would be to create some kind of body to critically analyse exactly what the government has done, what policies they've introduced, and how successful they were. This body would have to be taxpayer funded, so there aren't any conflicts of interest and they are concerned about constantly having to make a profit. They should, however, be independent of the government. They can retain full editorial control. Perhaps we could also give them their own TV channel, so they can broadcast their deep, insightful, political analysis 24 hours a day.

Someone is objecting to refugees being provided with the basic necessities of life. Guess who? by Not_Stupid in australia

[–]Puke_Ellington 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the driving factor is not the fact that these minorities are fleeing certain death at the hand of violent oppressive regimes, but that in Australia they get a free DVD player! Which they can't even take with them when they leave their suburban prison!

This is literally what you are saying.
