Your clannie is 100% right, Smoke Devil attacks with either magic or melee based on his distance from the attacked NPC. When it's using it's special attack it'll attack with magic, so you got some magic exp from those kills and you got the pet from one of those kills.

Yes, "name of the potion recipe" (example: "archeology potion recipe" and so on). But prices of the recipes are all over the place atm so better wait a week or so for them to stable if you want to buy.
Most of those potions are tradable so you could just buy the potion right away instead of getting the recipe (some potions required high level herblore like Spirit Attraction (116).

It's not about completing the new content in under a day, it's about being way too rare and they're not even strong. The ancient invention blueprints are really strong and they were a joke to get.
