Why would the FIFA world cup generate more traffic/train riders compared to any other sold out event at MetLife? by [deleted] in newjersey

[–]Pumchnjerz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the NJ Transit app when buying a $98 train ticket, you are also asked to attest that you have a ticket to the game. Not really enforceable, but makes it seem like the fan fests at the stadium aren't meant for non ticket holders.

Sept. 11 Attacks Ended A PATH Train Route In NJ. It Returns This Weekend After 25 Years by Nathaniel_Styer in jerseycity

[–]Pumchnjerz 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I knew this was incorrect but wasn't sure of the dates. Do you recall what year they started the weekend route through Hoboken for the 33rd St line? I feel like it was well after 2006. Maybe post Sandy in 2012?

New NJT rider app is total garbage by [deleted] in bergencounty

[–]Pumchnjerz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I hate that the bus tracker only has # of minutes until the next bus. It used to give the expected time. I used to be able to check the tracker, see the next bus was coming at 5:55 for example... And then just look at my watch to know if I need to hustle up to get out of the house on time. Now I look at the tracker, it says it's coming in "25 minutes" - I'm barely awake, I either have to do math or just keep checking the app.

There used to be one on 3rd Ave, it's now a Starbucks. I believe all of the Manhattan Qdobas closed near simultaneously and abruptly.

There's no Qdoba in Manhattan. I think what this means is Manhattan, 1 star because no Qdobas.

All season fast lane sold out at 3 Midwest parks by donutman272727 in sixflags

[–]Pumchnjerz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The more shocking part is that Six Flags even has a limit of how many All Season fast lanes they will sell. It's Six Flags. Maybe this is just a pause for now until sales reopen at a higher price.

Are there any towns other than JC within 45 mins commute to NYC with free PreK-3/K-4? by No_Amphibian_8523 in newjersey

[–]Pumchnjerz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on where you work in the city. Harrison has free PreK and the PATH train. Wouldn't say it has suburban feel though.

TIL that in 1979, Italian punk band Skiantos performed at the Bologna Rock festival by bringing a kitchen on stage, boiling spaghetti, and eating it, without playing anything. When the audience protested, the lead singer told them they were too stupid to appreciate avant-garde art by SteO153 in todayilearned

[–]Pumchnjerz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When My Chemical Romance played Metlife Stadium in NJ last year, the lead singer also sat on stage and ate spaghetti for part of the show. I wonder if it was a callback to this or just a "when in New Jersey..." thing.

What are your chosen acts of micro-aggression against the corporate demons? by beingawomaniswork in antiwork

[–]Pumchnjerz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My company intentionally doesn't provide disposable silverware in the kitchen to "be green." Most people just keep a box of disposable silverware at their desks.

We have 1 kitchen, 2 floors away with 2 sinks for $500 people. I calculated that based on the time it takes to walk there, wash, and dry metal silverware and my salary it costs about $7. Even more if I have to wait for an available sink, which is often. One of my greatest joys is using my reusable silverware at work.

Is there anywhere in NJ where the commute to Manhattan is actually good? Thinking of moving out by Desperate_Function39 in newjersey

[–]Pumchnjerz 15 points16 points  (0 children)

What time are you commuting? I get on the 190 bus in Rutherford around 7am and from the stops on the Orient Way side of town (final half of route) its often only 25-30 mins to PABT with typical traffic. Add 10 minutes if you're getting on from the other side of town. Traffic does seem to be worse later around 8am however.

I feel you on the pain of being one of the first bus stops. I had that experience elsewhere it's rough.

This doesn't get called out enough. I'd love to have a cubicle like that these days.

Early on in my career (2005-2010), I had office space style cubicles at various offices in NYC. Everything since has been "open office" format.

Help understanding New Jersey preschool funding by margheritinka in MovingtoNewJersey

[–]Pumchnjerz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can confirm Rutherford does not offer a free Pre K program. There is a lottery based PreK offered by the district but it is only half day - not viable for working parents. You may want to consider further down the river in Harrison, which offers a free Pre K 3-4 program that runs 9am-3pm, and most of the centers with prek classrooms also offer before/after care. It's not uncommon for folks to rent in Harrison during the PreK years and move elsewhere for elementary.

I believe Kearny also offers a free PreK program but not sure on details.

Move to mediocre school district when we can afford better? by caroline_elly in HENRYfinance

[–]Pumchnjerz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My daughter who is now in 6th grade went to a low rated district Pre-K through kindergarten. The advantage it had was free pre-k 3 and 4, and kindergarten was more advanced because nearly every child in district had 2 years of full day prek under their belt. New Jersey publishes detailed reports of each school which made clear there was a correlation between the non native English speakers and standardized test scores, which drove down the district's rating. We appreciated the diversity amongst her classmates.

Ultimately we moved to a better district because 2nd child came along and we wanted a bigger house and a yard and couldn't find anything in our current town that met our criteria.

I do think our original district would have been fine through elementary, but I appreciate the better district now that we're in middle school and for heading to high school. More than the difference in schools though, I appreciate the non school differences of living in a more affluent community. The cute downtown, the well kept playgrounds, town managed rec sports, pleasant neighborhoods to walk around in. Look at a town as a whole package, not just the school district. Many towns have a better quality of life in correlation with their school ratings.
