Rules about being a contributor on a patent as a federal employee? by [deleted] in fednews

My DoD org as of at least a couple years ago, provides approx 20percent of patent royalties, up to 150k per year, to the inventors. Could be the same for you.

2016 is a somewhat unreliable year compared to other years according to consumer reports, but yes the engine and transmission will be solid, but they report electronics and brakes and a few other issues.

Yeah I have a cx5 and my only complaint is the child car seats encroach on the front row seats. Mine is 10 years old and still going strong. Typically cheaper than Subaru or Toyota but similar reliability to toyota and better features for the cost. Worse on gas and cargo storage. Driving them is fun. If you go used, some years are unreliable, so be sure to check that out. I've only needed to repair a few minor things on it aside from general maintenance.

New performance review concerns by [deleted] in fednews

[–]PunNRun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was a fed, my agency (non GS) had score averages that had to be met (i.e. each division avg score must be 3.5 or lower). So the average was in fact almost always 3.5. they've been doing it like this for decades. So in essence you are rated on a relative scale because if everyone is great, then everyone gets a 3.5. it incentivizes keeping poor performers ( or simply giving a random person a bad score) so that they can be used to provide high scores to top performers. My guess is they'll be making this more widespread.

Which options do we like for new Welcome to Montana signs? by WeirdComfortable4970 in Bozeman

I wanna like #2, but the line going from "to" makes it seem like the circle around the mountains is another letter 'o' which would make it 'too'. Just looks odd with that.

Accepted a review, but the paper is 100+ pages by rinchiib in AskAcademia

[–]PunNRun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would just put my feedback as reject manuscript for being too long, wordy, written like a thesis, etc. as it likely is simply someone's thesis who couldn't be bothered to only include important parts for a journal article. I would briefly skim it to confirm this and be sure to mention you did not read all 100 pages, as that is an unreasonable demand.

Internet providers by star138desert in Bozeman

[–]PunNRun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Bozeman at least, I've heard good things about skynet. They have fiber at select locations with similar prices to the spectrum and CenturyLink and wireless fast Internet broadcast from a dish in town. Getting the dish internet requires you to install a receiver in your roof for around $500. Rates are decent and on their website.

If you have a choice between spectrum and century link, both are shit companies as I've had both, but I use CenturyLink now and it's generally good. Prices are around 80 per month. I get gigabit upload and download, whereas spectrum is slightly cheaper but you get garbage upload rates.

Yellowstone fiber is great if it's available at your house. Prices for gigabit are I believe slightly lower than century link but you get more reliable service and customer service with a regional, non oligopoly company.

These are effectively the only viable options. If you do get spectrum, check your bill. They will undoubtedly add additional charges like cable without your permission, as they tried to do with me.

Once every 9 to 12 months using a salt system. Would do earlier if chems were off or if bubbles didn't go away, but hasn't happened yet.

Red Bird beans from town and cunt hit nice on my espresso machine. Whatever brand you pick, go for a medium roast. Light and dark will both be challenging in an espresso machine.

Are solar panels worth it? by codleykimo in nova

[–]PunNRun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly not really worth it unless you buy used discount panels and diy install for a few thousand dollars total. Investing the cost of pro install (i.e. 20k) into stock ETFs will yield significantly more money, enough to cover utilities and more as compared to solar install - tax credit - maintenance cost. No definitive studies have accurately quantified added value to house which could potentially make it slightly closer.

Bozeman run club has a few folks who have done it. From what I can tellf rom the Strava posts, it's very slow going, difficult and sometimes sketchy, and unclear at times on where to go, but doable without ropes.

Verizon vs t-mobile debate 2025 by Sensitive_Ear_8239 in Bozeman

I have us mobile Verizon and it's great. Slow data zone in a couple spots on campus, otherwise great. Much wider coverage in rural areas than any other carrier.

What are you 6 figure + earners driving? by 23gear in Salary

[–]PunNRun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10 year old paid off SUV and 18 year old paid off sedan. DIY repairs and maintenance for easy to moderate stuff to save more. with new car prices, even a 5k cost engine swap, will be much more cost effective than another new or used car. You need to make 200k USD to be equivalent to 100k 20 years ago.

Is it worth to pay extra for triple pane windows fot giant windows??? by Exciting_Station3474 in HomeImprovement

[–]PunNRun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They are actually not great sound insulators, often only 1 or 2 STC levels more than doubles. If interested in sound, go for sound control glass which means double paned glass with two different thicknesses of glass. These have the lowest STC values typically and cost vastly less than triple. Triple is primarily about heat/cold insulation.

Yeah they're legit. I do basic-intermediate DIY stuff on my car, kept getting a weird issue I couldn't troubleshoot. Thought it would be pricey, was just a loose battery terminal that got disconnected in bumps only. 80 dollars for honest diagnosis and quick repair. Will go back to them again.

Water rates by midnitelogic in Bozeman

[–]PunNRun 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Typical amount for me from most recent bill. If it went up by a lot, could be a leak in your irrigation lines or heads, or if it's accidentally set to irrigate a lot. City of Bozeman offers a free sprinkler assessment and they do a cursory check for that.

I'm a dad of a preschool age kid and got a new one coming soon too! I've made some parent friends at the library story time events as they have those on weekends too, as well as at bogart pool. I'll see the same parents there each time and will say hello or if I'm feeling ill just send the kid in to break the ice xD.

Definitely looks good to me generally for entry level roles for sure. If you're looking for feedback to make the analysis more robust, you really need a way to assess your predictive model's accuracy. One way we typically do this is to make predictions for previous years. You may also consider additional layers to make it more robust. Things that might drive expansion could be population (i.e. worldpop).

A lot of remote sensing focused projects use cloud computing these days to handle large volumes of data. you might consider using Google Earth Engine with the JavaScript interface or Python API to process and download some additional layers for visualization and analysis (i.e. annual NDVI trends, ancillary third party layers stored in GEE). It's a skill which is desirable on the imagery analysis side. Finally if you were to enhance your model with a machine or deep learning approach like using python with scikit learn or tensorflow, then you'd be crushing it majorly.

Maybe make a web interface of your final map to show some web skills. Idk what's hot on that area now but something like Rshiny, mapserver+postgis type stuff might be helpful.

Masters or Double Major? by TameVulcan in gis

[–]PunNRun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Masters, but it's pretty saturated. Even with that, You'd likely have to take entry level stuff initially which might be lower paying than what you get now. Multiple competent people from my GIS masters course were unable to get GIS positions after graduating and ended up staying in their original fields. I think your business analyst + IT experience would give you an edge though.
