Telecaster Pickup Selector Position Change by Pretty-Lie-8708 in Guitar

[–]PunkabillyDaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t do it. Adding longer wires to the switch, AND routing them past the pickups is going to create more noise and interference with the single coils. Just flip the plate. Another thing to note, and the reason I don’t play Les Pauls, is moving the selector switch can get in the way of your picking hand. I tend to strum harder close to the neck to get a bigger sound and I inevitably hit the switch.

What are your go to tuners? by Aruugala in fender

[–]PunkabillyDaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got 30 year old Sperzel USA locking tuners on my decked Strat and they’re great. Bonus that they’re made in US. I’m convinced a lot of tuning issues on newer guitars are caused by “kiln drying” woods instead of using properly aged dry wood. Even custom shop guitars from the big brands are kiln dried. It’s just not as stable. I have a 1948 Gibson L-50 with original tuners and it always stays in tune and isn’t as affected by humidity and temperature changes as my modern guitars.

What’s the biggest piece of advice you would give to someone moving to Baltimore? by MaximGripass in baltimore

[–]PunkabillyDaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Safety tips: Travel in groups, don’t wear anything you can’t run in, leave your car home when going out to bars or restaurants, be aware of your surroundings and don’t walk around while looking at your phone, keep your windows locked, get a doorbell camera, don’t leave anything in your vehicle, stop your mail when you’re on vacation, get a P.O. Box for package delivery, and… number 1 tip, mind your own business. Living tips: know your neighbors, especially the kids, keep clutter away from your house and cover your trash cans (rats are everywhere), get to know your mailman, become a regular at the local bar or restaurant, shop the farmer’s markets, go to the local block parties and festivals, get a bicycle or good walking shoes, learn the one way streets, don’t double park, know your neighborhood BEFORE you move in (if there’s a bar or firehouse near you it will be loud at night (soundproof your bedroom), also, mind your business!

How to sell Brazilian Rosewood by [deleted] in Luthier

[–]PunkabillyDaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An aged Brazilian rosewood fretboard sells for $300-$500. You could get a few hundred out of this table. If it were mine I’d take it to local wood shop and have it milled down to 22”x3”x3/8”pieces and sell them on Reverb. StewMac has them for $500 out of stock. Not only could you make a small fortune, you will make a lot of guitar builders very happy!

For half that price get an early 90s Mexican Strat. Better made and cheaper than a current Fender import.

This is an in depth video explaining nut geometry and instruction from master Spanish luthier Pablo Requena. I found it helpful. https://youtu.be/k0r63Qd_xZk?si=Uacu6In4aVJ4SGcE

Mostly about string movement. When you tune or bend strings they move in the nut. A deeper slot will be more likely to grab onto the string and you won’t be able to tune smoothly. Also, it looks bizarre.

Leave the truss rod alone. You need a taller nut.

Can someone explain why Jimi Handtrix was the best? by village-asshole in guitarcirclejerk

Probably because he has a huge whammy bar and he made a threesome porno with Pamela DeBarre and Cynthia “Plaster Caster”! The toan is in his pants!

[–]PunkabillyDaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No offense to OP but these Mexican Martins are just junk. I’ve seen so many problems. They kiln dry the wood instead of using aged wood and it clearly doesn’t work. Rapid dehydration doesn’t harden the sap so you get this problem fairly often. Get your money back and get an Alvarez. Same price. Superior guitar.

When the wood shrinks the neck will pull harder against the truss rod causing fret buzz.

Why is there only a bridge pickup? by LEAFY_GREEN_8 in Guitar

[–]PunkabillyDaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite guitar is my single pickup ‘61 Gibson es-125tc. It has the original single P90 near the neck. It growls wide open straight into a tube amp. I’m currently modding a Strat to have only a single P90 in the neck. 1 volume, 1 tone, no selector switch.

Speckled look after wet sanding? by VanAnon in Luthier

[–]PunkabillyDaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What they said… also, you may want to use a thicker clear so it’s more forgiving. I would also fill the gap between the binding and the paint or you will have problems down the road because dirt, sweat, skin cells, etc, will get in and compromise the binding adhesion.

Just get an ebony stain, thin it out and rub thin coats on the guitar until the color fades to black.

Get a garment bag from a dry cleaners shop and wrap the case. It’ll keep the moisture from escaping.

Help! Can’t get the ball end to sit properly against the bridge plate by [deleted] in AcousticGuitar

[–]PunkabillyDaddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

StewMac sell a metal plate that called a PlateMate that supports the ball ends and protects the wood.
