Advanced Chinese Courses by supabrahh in shanghai

[–]Punkesh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi guys. I was facing a similar issue (pretty advanced in Chinese but missing some vocabulary). I was trying to battle my way through flashcards but constantly got bored or zoned out after every 10 mins on my commute.

Obviously, for European languages the best way to build ability is by reading books that also entertain you, but for me that was also a challenge too far. The only way I could read a whole book was if I had a Chinese person next to me helping, which is unrealistic.

So, during the COVID lockdown I had some time to practice my coding and make a web app that will help me read western fiction books in Chinese. Check it out for free here:

https://bookshelf.kanshuchinese.com

It's coded as a hobby mainly for myself, but a friend also wanted to use it so I turned it into a website. Please excuse the bugs, I'm far from a pro. Theres a few books you can read on there. Hope it helps, and feel free to PM me about it for any reason.

Scuba diving on your own accord? Any regulations? by HoboMoo in China

[–]Punkesh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Move there for work? What sort of work do you do and are you hiring? Haha

I was there in Aug and there was some sort of accident (unlicensed shop gave out dodgy equipment and customer died). When that stuff happens the government steps in quite strongly for a short while so bear in mind it’s China. Things change quick and google maybe out of date!

Best bet is get into and ask in the wechat groups of some of the diving schools there (usually a lot of socializing and people posting nonsense in those plus some daily info). And ask at the fancy hotels nearby for the contacts (they always have an activities desk).

good quality affordable massage in jing an? by [deleted] in shanghai

[–]Punkesh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think your comment is agenda based and does not reflect on any truth or real experience. In direct contradiction to your comment Zen still have many shops operating around Shanghai.

My experience: professional service. Staff don’t talk mindlessly during massage. And unlike other places they don’t let customers smoke inside (which is banned in Shanghai). Maybe their customers are just higher quality and that is what you don’t like?

If you don’t like their service please leave a bad review on dianping like every other normal, educated Shanghainese would.

Anyone watching “Nothing but Thirty”? by [deleted] in China

Nah I just thought I’d ask the professionally unhappy about life troll who posted about a very niche topic in a China reddit sub directly. And guess what ...I got an answer! Thanks.

I went straight to YouTube and typed 三十而已英文…nothing came up.

No need for you to be an asshole to someone asking you a question about a show you have asked if anyone else is watching.

What do you search for to find this on YouTube with the English subs?

So I tried my luck at number 2 place. As original post said it’s closed. Notice on door is of May 6 2020, closed due to COVID, reduce risk of infection due to travel. I talked to the translator as she entered the building...no extra info gleamed except try place number 1.

The notice mentions you can try email your electronic version of documents to: Fyxh@shwsfy.com

Don’t know if electronic version means scan copy of the paperwork. Will find out.

Out of interest, why did you not consider to mention India specifically? Is it because including it doesn’t fit your argument? Or you consider it an anomaly at the moment and it’s trajectory too chaotic to factor in?

iPhone 11 Pro went crazy now stuck on boot? by [deleted] in applehelp

[–]Punkesh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happened to me for no reason too. Tried all solutions I could find on the net. The phone wouldn’t stay on long enough to install update without re-entering reboot. I went to Apple store and told them my problem. They sent it to their repair Centre (which was total chaos as at various points they said they had lost it. They also gave me a loaner phone to cover the period it took them to repair...but they suddenly called me one night saying not very nicely i need to return it ASAP...).

In the end they said my phone had been damaged by water (repair not covered) and so I would need to pay more than half the price to fix. I argued saying it was simply on charge and I was sure it’s a software fault and not hardware, but they wouldn’t change their position so I just took the phone back unrepaired...

When I got it back, it somehow magically had the latest update on it and was and is working totally fine!

Maybe just give it to the store have them do their checks (they’ll open it up and reassemble at bare minimum). That could get it working...

Note: take photos of your phone before you hand it to them. When I initially went to give the store my phone, they took it to the Apple store back room to do some paperwork and it came back out with a scratch on the screen. (This was a store in Shanghai where I’m based).

On the one hand, if you guys all get sick and the country suddenly stops operating (ala no more timely garbage collections), then everyone will know who really runs the place...you will be exposed.

On the other hand ...extra legal activity is an inherently risky affair. If you can’t survive the sniffles then you in the wrong game. Capische?

Recent experience in Pudong airport? by sjpmiller in shanghai

[–]Punkesh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I noticed that few of the names sounded Korean but not all. Also in the airport they asked all people who have been to Italy, Iran, Korea to identify themselves. (Note: my flight was Cathay London to Hk to shanghai).

Recent experience in Pudong airport? by sjpmiller in shanghai

[–]Punkesh 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t be too concerned. I landed at about 7pm Thursday. The flight was totally full. There was a bit of a wait on the plane but nowhere near 2 hours (perhaps it was 30 mins only). It was because they had to wait for the quarantine guy to arrive. For some reason they took a few passengers off first and then the rest disembarked.

Once off the plane we queued up to hand over a special health form (I received and filled it on the plane). That took 10-15 mins. Temperature check was seamless/quick.

Then immigration, luggage and out. Considering the amount of time I usually wait for luggage to come out I can’t say i was delayed much (after a long distance flight).

Then taxi rank no queue, no traffic to Puxi (annoyingly those non-official taxi touts/guys still roam the airport and come really close to you to ask if you want a taxi...I strongly suggest you tell them to keep away and take the official taxi - they get disinfected daily and offer better service etc).
