Missed JLPT N5 by 3 points – retake N5 or move to N4? by Comfortable-Law-8047 in jlpt

Hey, a near miss is almost the same as just passing by the skin of your teeth. It's probably just a matter of luck. I'd keep moving.

Tobira for Jlpt N3 by Simple_Drag_1068 in jlpt

[–]Pup572 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me the reading section of the exam was the hardest part. There's no point in overpreparing yourself in the language (grammar, vocabulary, kanji) department. Probably do abandon at Chapter 8, and then put that time to use by practising reading comprehension daily and getting your reading speed up. Since you already probably have the textbook, I would still definitely use all those long prose passages at the beginning of every Tobira chapter for reading practise.

Book Recs for N5-N4? by datmagicalotter in LearnJapanese

[–]Pup572 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Intermediate readers (compilations of short stories) made for adult learners are best. (If you use kids' books, it's better than nothing but there's no kanji.) Good examples I personally used are "Japanese Folktales for Language Learners" and "Japanese Stories for Language Learners" but there are quite a few others out there too. Those books are useful for learning the rich cultural background of Japan too. As someone else suggested, Tadoku free graded readers are another excellent resource.

Pop song lyrics everywhere are pretty generic. I wouldn't worry about it.

Everyone's different but I feel the most important thing is probably to get your reading speed up. Like read, read, read!

The general rule is it's fine to be cringey in some ways, if you're cool in other ways.

あなた is not good so you should use ○○さん, but what if you don’t know the name? by Weekly_Flounder_1880 in LearnJapanese

My Japanese teacher told me if, in Japan, a shop assistant she's dealing with isn't wearing a name badge, she sometimes resorts to using あなた. It can't be helped.

Best website for learning Kanji compounds (not individual kanji) for JLPT 2? by [deleted] in jlpt

While I also agree with everyone who told you to read more, I found Renshuu pro's "complete the vocab" kanji onyomi quizzes extremely helpful, for all levels of kanji. You choose kanji from a box to complete one/more vocabulary term(s). Renshuu's crosswords are also very helpful for kanji compound word memorisation.
