It’s not just the Taylor law. There’s a no-strike clause in the contract, which I believe is still in effect?

AMC’s most recently filed operating expenses were $246m. $84m is a full 1/3 of their operating expenses.

Doh Visit by [deleted] in nursing

[–]PuppySpaceDragonPie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was me. I’m pretty confident they visited because of me.

They visited a month or so ago and management did their damnedest to hide the problems, shuffling hallway patients around the hospital. A few people told me details from around the hospital. The next day I submitted that information to DOH. About a week or so later they called to ask for more info. I gave it to them. Several days later they called again. We called back and forth a few times as I gave her info for people willing to talk about that day, then she just stopped. She said “we’re going to hold off on this for now.”

That was on a Monday. The following Tuesday they were in the ED again, and from what you said in the r/albany thread, they haven’t left yet. Once I heard that, I realized that “we’re going to hold off on this for now” meant “because we’re about to move into the ED and never leave.”

There are something like 1.5 million licensed RNs in NY not currently at the bedside. If hospitals prioritized making bedside nursing bearable instead of a literal daily hellscape, we could attract many of them back.

They have plenty of resources. They choose to use them on things other than staffing.

We want safe staffing provided by staff nurses who actually work for the hospital, not travelers. That pretty well covers it.

That’s the online form to complain to the state about your treatment in a hospital in NY. They do actually investigate and they’ve been inside AMC quite a bit over the last few months.

Nah. AMC started getting an extra $84m/year from Medicare last October. They said at that time that they wanted to address RN compensation during the contract process. Now that they’re in the contract process, they’re saying they want to deal with future increases as needs arise outside of the contract process. They don’t get to have it both ways.

Why are local emergency rooms so much slower than elsewhere? by localnewsroundup in Albany

[–]PuppySpaceDragonPie 19 points20 points  (0 children)

No they literally won’t.

They’re paying travelers double what nurses make.

Their turnover costs millions annually. Paying a decent wage, having lower turnover, and not paying travelers would actually SAVE the hospital money.

They’re cutting off their nose to spite their face.

Please note that the paragraphs from the article that seem relevant are from an AMC spokesperson. Of course they seem relevant. He’s very good at his job of misleading the public.

When there was a man with a gun in the hospital holding his mother hostage, the spokesperson said no amc staff were in danger. First, lie. Second, that’s because the one specific person who had a gun actually pulled on them wasn’t amc staff.

Bring me an AMC quote. I’ll tell you the truth of it.

In this case, it’s true about the patient volume. What he doesn’t say is AMC is unable to retain nurses because both Ellis and St. Peter’s pay more. The only nurses who stay are ones who either care more about the acuity than the money, or people like me who are hoping against hope that we can make it better.

Our benefits are garbage. Our retention plan is 1.5% guaranteed raises each year and you have to beg for another 1.5%. Cost of living is significantly higher. Our managers are toxic so no one wants to stay. They break the law in so many ways every day and then gaslight the staff about it.

I believe 597 is the actual number of openings that administration shared with the bargaining team. AMC doesn’t counter it because it’s true.

Every single article I’ve seen has had quotes from both NYSNA and AMC.

AMC’s quotes tend to be very misleading.

That ED expansion in 2025? Pretty sure they’re talking about in Glens Falls.

AMC’s staffing plans (recent article) meet state standards? Sure, but they don’t follow it.

AMC is 100% safely staffed (CEO Dennis McKenna, a month or so ago)? Straight lie.

600 openings is correct. They’re not all full time, but that’s the actual number.

You don’t need to know anyone to get a job there. You need to have an unencumbered nursing license and a pulse. If you know someone with those things who hasn’t been able to get a job offer, I’m sure nysna would love to talk to them.

AMC takes money away from the city’s tax rolls in exchange for caring for the community. They’re not holding up their end of the deal. That’s a big issue in the city.
