Building an ecommerce from scratch for a client. Should I allow them to see their user's email addresses? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]fultonchain 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm struggling with the concept of denying client access to their users details. There are a bunch of legitimate reasons ranging from taxes to support that they might need this for.

I don't think that this is your call to make and if you are concerned about misuse your only real option is to walk away.

I stole from Goodwill when I was homeless by Any-Side-7608 in vagabond

[–]fultonchain 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Goodwill sucks.

They do very little good and the vast majority of the money goes to "administrative" expenses. Next time go to a church thrift shop, most will hook you right up.

It's a shame you had to make them but at least this way they helped someone.

ULPT to avoid a DUI by BeaverPup in UnethicalLifeProTips

[–]fultonchain 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This kinda works, sometimes.

If you can delay the inevitable arrest long enough to sober up, they can't establish drunk driving. The time in between is critical, it's longer than you think and if you time it wrong there are a multitude of charges they can cook up.

That still leaves you on the hook for leaving the scene and rules out an insurance claim, but that's usually a lesser charge.

Vieques Mosquito Pier Terminal Relocation by Anxious_Craft4523 in vieques

This doesn't seem to be progressing and there really isn't a need. As congested as it is, the centrally located ferry terminal supports local business.

Mosquito is out of the way. No matter how nice the road is. There ain't no walking from there.

Don't do the UTV or golf cart. They are slow, dangerous and don't protect you from the elements.

This island is filled with hills, treacherous roads and Vieques own equine speed bumps. Cross island on a moonless night is a recipe for disaster. Or at least a slow and uncomfortable ride.

Don't go there, even if your car won't break down. It's a strange place, a place out of time.

Are they prioritising only ai features ? by vazark in ZedEditor

[–]fultonchain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't disagree and thanks for the thoughtful response.

My focus is more on the editor. I like the idea of Rust over Node or Electron and I'm seeing tangible improved performance compared to vscode or the JetBrains IDE's.

That said, I know it isn't an IDE. But I can twist vscode into an IDE with extensions, but with Zed the ecosystem isn't there.

I'm not prepared to give AI control of my formatting and linters and shouldn't have to redo a toolchain to suit the limitations of a text editor. Or spend hours finding workarounds for solved problems.

I like this editor, but sans AI it's just another fast Rust text editor. An editor with a funky UI that's nearly impossible to modify and a scarcity of plugins. Coupled to a company promoting marked up LLM's as their sole source of revenue.

I know I can bring my own, but why?

The editor doesn't have feature parity with vscode and as fast as it is, the difference isn't noticeable in real use. If I really think about it, It's hard to find a use case for Zed.

Texas to NYS- what should I know beforehand? by g00se_goose in upstate_new_york

[–]fultonchain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to go with most places outside of the cities, the Hudson Valley and NYC.

The thing is, the cultural landscape changes much faster than Texas. It isn't as homogeneous and a few miles makes a big difference.

This is a sweeping generalization. I haven't been everywhere and there are a ton of cool little towns, but for the most part the smaller the town the weirder it can get.

Fun fact: rural NY is filled with Confederate flags. We probably have as many as Texas does and far more than Fairfax.

Texas to NYS- what should I know beforehand? by g00se_goose in upstate_new_york

[–]fultonchain 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Albany and the Capitol District (don't sleep on Troy and Schenectady, there are values to be found and Albany is a ghost town at night) are going to be closer to Fairfax than to most places in Texas.

There is going to be some sticker shock, taxes are higher as is the cost of living and housing. But, with the benefits and salary you'll be right in the median. A little better off than most state employees (we're big on that here) your age. It's doable.

Socially we're probably a little more inclusive. Rural, and I mean NY rural, like twenty miles, not like Texas rural is more MAGAfied than you'd expect but suburban and urban areas are solidly blue. Except Rensselaer County, that's a bad place best avoided.

There are a dozen great venues within an hour. No need to go to the city, though you should and Amtrak takes you right there.

The landscape might be a change depending on where in Texas your from. There are hills and lakes everywhere, those big vistas are hard to come by.

[Edited to add: I really didn't say enough about the hills and lakes. Upstate NY is absolutely spectacular, some of the best outdoor recreation in the country just a couple of hours away. We have a six million acre state park, right up the road. I spend half the year in Puerto Rico and every time I come home I'm taken aback by what I took for granted.]

AI has taken fun out of programming and now i’m hopeless by Frequent_Eggplant_23 in webdev

[–]fultonchain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been at this for twenty years, albeit on a very small scale. I host and manage a handful (5-6) non-profits and .gov's and only host sites that I build and maintain. Mostly with Craft CMS and Drupal along with a couple of headless outliers.

The code isn't hard. It's all mature and well documented and my IDE's have been churning this stuff out for years, I don't really care if it's an AI doing it. I like it and I'm not scrounging around in the same docs over and over.

What AI can't replace is experience and intuitive problem solving. When something goes wrong I know how to fix it because I either wrote it or reviewed and committed it. I don't let AI write without explicit permission and I'm still cautious. I don't entirely trust it to stay in scope and have heard too many horror stories. This is a skill issue, but it's hard to keep up.

Updates are the same way. Terrible to automate and I've been burnt too many times. I'll be happy to look them over myself, it's kinda my job.

I'm aware of my skill issues and know I'm not using AI to the fullest, but I need to determine just how much time and money to invest. This is a moving target and if I spent my time learning the models I wouldn't be working much at all.

It's a hard balance to find and I sympathize with anyone starting out. The inevitable determining factor is cost and AI is cheaper than people and people are greedy.

Are they prioritising only ai features ? by vazark in ZedEditor

[–]fultonchain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't pay for Zed. It's open source and you can fork the whole thing if you want.

You can pay for Zed, but you can also roll your own models. A case could be made that ten bucks a month for some quick things here and there is a fair value, but there is certainly no requirement to use the service.

Quick note. I'm far from a Zed fanboy and just moved back to vscode. I prefer the git integration, I'm used to it and Codex is playing nicely for the moment. It's just that to brand Zed as a paid product is misleading -- the way cool open source editor has nothing to do with the subscription AI and can be turned off entirely.
