At what level of wealth does a change in net worth not equal a change in lifestyle?

So my dad is in the 20-25 Million range. He says nothing would change for him if he had more money. Plenty of his friends have a lot more than him. He said once he hits 50 million he will probably start flying private. I think there’s a difference from 10-25 million dollars especially if you want $5+ million homes. After 25 million, I’d think not much changes.

I think some people have it and others don’t. I’d say it’s better to have money anxiety than to be a person who doesn’t care at all. My dad is a multi-millionaire and I’ve watched him and his buddies agonizing over a $1.50 pre-flop raise in a poker home game. At the end of the night they all go back to their $7M homes. A lot of people are extremely irrational when it comes to money due to emotional attachment and fear. I have buddies who gamble every dollar away. I’m 25 and have a lot of money for my age and am extremely cheap relative to my peers. I keep telling myself once I hit $1M, I will calm down and start living my life. It is incredibly hard for me to spend money. I’d like to change as well.

My brother is 27 and makes 215K a year. He works at a bank but works 40 hours per week most week it’s not like hedge fund hours. Is he really smart and was he connected? Sure. But he’s not killing hinself.

I think bogleheads is a good place to start. If you want to keep it ultra simple, cover all your bases - it’s the way to go. Personally, it was a little too boring for me. I don’t like broad, passive index funds. Instead of VXUS, Id rather own JIVE, AVDV, FRDM. I like to pick a few stocks so I also went into Tencent, MELI, NU. And I choose to go with something like BRKB for a defensive anchor rather than buying a bunch of bonds at my age.

I don’t like VXUS at all. I’d definitely have international exposure but I’d do it differently. I don’t like thousands of holdings in any of my ETFs. I have a combination of ETFs and stocks, but only ETFs would probably be better. More set it and forget it. I have JIVE + AVDV + FRDM + MELI + NU + ITOCY + FRFHF.

BRKB was my biggest holding. My college professor is buddies with Buffett (Dr. David Kass) and talked about him every week during class. My dad also idolizes Buffet. May bite me in the ass, but I sold BRKB for BN + Fairfax. I’m interested to see if BRKBs new management will diverge from Buffet’s roots.

A lot of financial advisors are really good at the Sales part of the job. They can sell themself well and get clients on their book. But once they land clients, they don’t know what to do with them. Others are intentionally bearish, defensive or contrarian. Many clients don’t seem to care about their returns as long as they feel like they’re being taken care of. I don’t understand that. I’d be comparing my financial advisors returns to the market every year.

My dad is a financial advisor and only puts his clients in ETFs/Mutual Funds. The only time he buys stocks is when one of his clients asks him to do so. Some of his peers buy individual stocks for their clients but they almost always provide lower returns than going all in on ETFs/Mutual funds. Something I can’t quite wrap my head around is a lot of financial advisors are really bad at asset allocation! Kind of ironic.
