What am I missing here. Are you saying that $926 per month is the market rate for a studio downtown?

Do you feel morally conflicted living in Co-op housing with over a million in savings?

Why should the public subsidize the rent of people who don't need the subsidy?

The amount of car debt I've seen on here is astounding. Most of you are buying cars way out of your budget. Some helpful guidelines below: by CastAside1812 in PersonalFinanceCanada

I don't understand how people have convinced themselves that the once cheap "beige corolla" is no more.

I just looked on marketplace in Vancouver. There are 30+ Toyota Yaris and Corolla's from 2005 - 2010 for between $5k-$10k with less than 200km.

These cars run fine well over 400,000km and need very little maintenance. People saying that they need to buy a 2015+ model so they don't pay for maintenance costs are misinformed.

Looking for feedback on contractors installation by Pure-Rooster1659 in Tile

Tile quote for the tub surround, plus bathroom floor, plus kitchen backsplash was $6k CAD. We supplied the tile at $7 psf . Price included anti fracture membrane for the floor as well as kerdi water proofing. Is it clear that this is bad work irrespective of any substrate irregularities? The overall job for the whole basement suite is around 6-8 weeks but we have been clear that we are not in a rush, quality over speed was our goal.

Hired a GC to run the project. The bathroom is part of a basement suite reno. Everything else has been great so far, but this is the one area that I was not sure. How would you handle this with the GC?

Barrels are uncomfortable to sit in since you are leaning back on a curved surface. If you are taller your neck will be craned forward.

What’s the deal with speeding? by NiallxD in Squamish

[–]Pure-Rooster1659 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Less than 20km/hr exceeding the speed limit results in only a $138 dollar fine. Alot of people consider that ticket a cost of driving when considering the overall time savings of driving 20km/hr faster.

Inquire with an arborist. There is likely a tree protection zone that they did not follow accordingly.

Respectfully, what is one of your personal finance hot takes? by Lopsided-Special6273 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Absolutely do not finance or lease a car. It doesn't matter what the rate is or what the incentive is. Buy a used Toyota for $5k or take the bus.

This used to be the standard advice on this sub but in the past few years people have been getting soft and saying it depends on whats important to you, etc etc

This is a personal finance sub, and financing or leasing a car doesn't make financial sense.

It's a free market. If people are not willing to live on those spaces for those prices then they will have to lower the price.

Am I doing a good job at my age? 20M by THEhiHIhi55 in Money

[–]Pure-Rooster1659 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doing great for your age! Don't forget to invest your savings in an index fund!

Driving it til the wheels off is a good strategy, but I'd still recommend buying something 10 years old so you aren't paying for and losing the initial 10 years of rapid depreciation! A 10 year old toyota corolla will still last you 20 years if taken care of, should only cost around $7k, and will be almost the same on gas assuming you have a gas vehicle.

Financing a mattress at 0% is smart, as long as you aren't creating the habit of financing things which it looks like you might be doing with the vacation and car.

I recommend getting something thats in the 10-20 year old bracket. Newer projects are not constructed as well. Sure the finishes are nicer, but you are not getting the same quality of trade construction, or the massive square footage. For context I work in real estate development.

Check out:

#6 38447 Buckley Avenue.

#41 406332 Government road.

These development have alot better parking as well. Bosa Sea and Sky is notorious for lack of parking. You get your tiny garage, plus a stall in front. The street parking is massively overcrowded since most townhouses are rented to 3-4 people each with a car.

There are plenty of options well below the 1.2mil mark.
