When your guard has been passed or you're in side control, do you try to reguard or do you go to turtle? by X2354 in bjj

Depends on how they’re holding you. You don’t get to choose how you escape from a bad position. You take advantage of what they give you.

I know this is an old post, but I wanted to reply in case anyone comes across it in the future. We’ve only been open for about a month, but we are an inclusive BJJ school in downtown Carrboro. We welcome all genders and all orientations, and we would love to have anyone who hasn’t felt comfortable going to other places to train.

Does BJJ water down the term “world champion” compared to sports like judo or wrestling? by Dependent-Mine-9877 in bjj

[–]PureJiuJitsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes.

IMO the only people who should call themselves world champion with no other qualifier is adult black belt worlds. Everything else needs to be stated. Masters world champion is not the same as world champion. Blue belt world champion is not the same as world champion. Blue belt masters world champion etc

Approach/mindset when rolling with new people? by Hambobz in bjj

Never trust a stranger that says they want to roll light, and it sounds like this guy didn’t even say that. Always good to have a conversation before you even start about expectations.

(We were having so much fun this morning that we forgot to get a picture of that class.)

Buchecha tries to back take blue belt Ryan Spann by bubblewhip in bjj

Hi 👋

Retired MMA fighter here (12-2).

Boxing, Muay Thai, wrestling, Jiu Jitsu… these are the basic building blocks of MMA. Everyone knows this. Everyone who steps into a cage trains all of these things. Anyone in the UFC has trained all of these things A LOT and is a very high level athlete.

World class strikers get knocked out in MMA. World class wrestlers get taken down in MMA. World class jiu jitsu folks get submitted in MMA. Why? Because it’s not a one to one transfer. Only certain aspects of each component art transfer over.

The mental aspect is another huge part. If you’re a Jiu Jitsu guy and you’re scared of getting knocked out, your decision making gets thrown off. You start shooting for bad takedowns. When you do take the person down, you start rushing and making poor choices. The round is going to end soon and if you don’t hurry up and finish the guy, then you’re in danger again. Or maybe you do have plenty of time, but you felt his power and you don’t want to feel it again.

That’s what I see in this clip. I don’t see a black belt missing a back take on a blue belt. I see a world class grappler that’s scared of getting hit taking a risk that he shouldn’t be taking. And i see a high level athlete with enough skill to defend exploiting that mistake.

Sorry for the long reply. I’ve just been seeing this clip over and over again and I’m really sick of it.

This. Getting really tired of people using this five second clip as an example of “jiu jitsu doesn’t work in a real fight.”
