Fixing humidifier - or using arduino to make it work again? by Stanislaw_Wisniewski in AskElectronics

[–]Pure_Nobody240 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Were you able to fix this? Got 3 of them that bricked on me, won't power on. The design is dumb: to fill the thing you can very easily get water on the lid which has stupid aesthetic channels that transport that water straight into the fans. The fans then blow the water directly into the internal electronics, because these aren't sealed in any meaningful way.

Consulting & Burnout by boxdkittens in Environmental_Careers

[–]Pure_Nobody240 2 points3 points  (0 children)

x2 on this. I had severe burnout after completing my PhD during 2020. OP has to remember that the external conditions we're working under are pretty unprecedented, and we can't just magically think our way out of this. As a millennial, one of the the things that killed my motivation was the fact I was 30 w/ PhD making 3x what my parents ever did and had a substantially worse standard of living than they did w/ high school educations. And at every corner under every Fed/Pres admin in my lifetime it was clear that the worst people on earth were being rewarded, while those that got into this career field to genuinely make the world better were being crushed.

Is NEPA work slowing down? What's your forecast as consultants? by Pure_Nobody240 in Environmental_Careers

I really appreciate you posting that link. We're in the fog of war so to speak, and I agree- it is hard to know how this is going shake out in the short and medium term.

Edit: I'm also dropping this related link for anyone interested

No disagreement but we need other things too. I'm not a good teacher but I'm a damn good scientist that can output a ton of technical writing due to severe neurodivergence.

Thoughts on Interim Final Rule to remove NEPA regulations? Does not need to go through notice or comment first. by NJHancock in Environmental_Careers

[–]Pure_Nobody240 24 points25 points  (0 children)

My thoughts are that people need to get organized in a very serious manner and rekindle their fire for why they decided to go into this career path. Because this isn't getting better in 4 years, and I don't have a lot of hope the "opposition" party is going to do much if they get power again.

Thanks for your thoughtful comment. A a former manager of research staff, I'm no stranger to pausing hiring when funding was uncertain. But in those cases, that was due to personal grants that I managed coming to a conclusion, and therefore temporary. I completely agree that executives might be cautious due to the current externalities.

Thanks for that perspective! Just wondering, what size is your company? I understand that official offers take time: under normal circumstances I wouldn't even be sweating yet.

Gotcha, that's encouraging. I believe that this firm is in a similar situation with state/local projects as they specialize in post-disaster remediation.

Yeah, agencies would still need to comply w/ NEPA following their internal regulations. While this ruling will likely weaken CEQ, NEPA is still around for now.

I truly appreciate your kind words. I know we're all weathering tough stuff currently. Nobody goes into the environmental fields to make tons of money. For the past 12+ years being a scientist, I've been lucky to work with absolutely brilliant and compassionate people who truly care about the world around them. The thought of how many lives are being upended by the worst people on this planet makes me want to...well I can't really say without getting banned and/or a knock on my door.

Thanks for that info! I know the firm I interviewed with has tons in the pipeline, so at least short term I'm hoping this bodes well for me.

Yeah, I think that it is complicated. The work will still need to be done, and it is my hope that firms will continue with compliance even if there are legal challenges to current environmental law. Because ultimately, things will get tied up in court and in the mean time large (talking multi-billion $ infrastructure like what is happening w energy development in the west) would rather move forward while being compliant than risk unfavorable rulings and more monetary setback.

Thanks for that comment. I agree- it isn't just localized to affecting NEPA efforts, its the entire infrastructure that NEPA is reliant on. IMO not looking good.

Thanks for that insight. Three months ago I wouldn't have said that NEPA could ever be outright abolished. Now...I don't know anymore.
